Hana Micron 'Host' MP3 Chimera
06/22/2005 01:57 AM
In
ancient times, seers would drink concoctions of nightshade and
coriander from amphorae to induce feverish dreams which they used as
justifications for their conquerers to hang babies from the backs of
moving elephants. Hana Micron's new 'Host' MP3 player harkens back to
that bright time in our existence, eye-checking the clay urn design in
the player itself, the swirling mystical lights of ecstatic vision in
the glowing docking station, and the fragile, flattened bodies of
children in the perpendicular USB flash drive docking port.
Unfortunately, it will only play back MP3s of the lamentation of
women.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash
Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash
03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Pretec Electronics
Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats
already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card
called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling
on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from
their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will
be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones,
which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly,
though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification
equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these
companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just
because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as
well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash
doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?
While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good
time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break
down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

IT Investor's Journal: Micron, Westaim
-- and Saddam
IT Investor's Journal: Micron, Westaim
-- and Saddam
12/22/2003 03:13 AMLast Monday, we gapped up nicely in reaction to the news of Saddam
Hussein's capture over the weekend, but then the market faded and we
closed lower that day than we opened. There was some euphoria in the
morning, but the smart trade was to sell the gap up. The thing is,
Saddam wasn't leading the resistance over there. That said, the market
recognized that he is strategically useful as a captive. He surely has
information that might be embarrassing to the French, Russians, and
others. So, there's some horse-trading to be done there, for sure.
However, the equity and currency markets, in particular the U.S.
dollar, indicated to me that the event was a non-starter. After the
initial excitement, the market resumed selling equities and the U.S.
dollar.
