The iPod may be popular, but also poses such a major security risk for businesses, that enterprises should seriously consider banning the iPod and other portable storage devices, according to a study by research firm Gartner Inc. The devices, using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) or FireWire (IEEE 1394), present risks to businesses on several fronts: from introducing malicious code into a corporate network, to being used to steal corporate data, the Stamford, Conn.-based research company said in its report "How to Tackle the Threat From Portable Storage Devices," published Friday.

Well now that analysts have gotten people all worked up about the security horror of camera phones, they've now set their sites on another evil security villain: the iPod. That's right, your iPods is a corporate risk. Hell, it could be used to introduce a virus or even to (gasp! oh no!) steal company files. Just wait until these analysts types learn about those USB keychain drives that just about everyone has already... oh wait, the report warns about those too. They then suggest that companies ban just about every new technology, no matter how useful it might be, just because there's a small risk that it could be misused. At what point do analysts stop freaking out about every new (or even not-so-new) technology, and realize that (a) banning the technology will never work and (b) will often make a company less productive than its rivals who learn to embrace new technologies? Is there a risk in any kind of additional, portable storage medium? Sure thing, but there's just as big a risk in someone ftp-ing files to an outside server. What it really means is that an IT staff no longer has to just be afraid of threats over the network, but also need to realize that threats can come from portable storage devices. Expect a ton of new client-side security products to start protecting on that side of the fence in the near future.

Tacoma, Washington, has a tremendously ahead-of-its-time fiber optic link run as a utility by the city, but a hotspot experiment has ended due to concerns over security: The network tested out a hotspot at one location, but decided that for security reasons--and also, but less importantly, lack of projectable revenue--that they'd pull the plug. As 802.1X and VPNs rise in availability and importance, it may be that security decisions can be wiped away. If you had a preponderance of Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.3 users, who have built-in VPN clients for both IPsec and PPTP as well as secured 802.1X/EAP, then perhaps you could build a business on the notion that you were offering 100-percent locally encrypted connections. I've wondered why hotspots don't partner with a VPN ASP and simply provide a free account to monthly users or a $1 add-on to pay-as-you-go users to give them permanent (monthly) or disposable (pay-as-you-go) VPN accounts? (Boingo is the only service to offer VPN as just a part of their client.)...

Lets be honest the people who run your IT department probably have had iPod's, USB Sticks for a long time. Now the big suprise I bet they have had them plugged into the corporate network sharing music and files for the past couple of years with their fellow IT coworkers. So I am sure they realized long ago that it would be easy for someone to upload something nasty from home onto the network via one of these devices. I also bet those IT departments have put in place policies for such devices.

If your company hasn't then you need to fire you lead IT manager. One thing the majority of IT professionals don't need, is some analyst figuring this out about 5 years to late. [ZDNet]

A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after passenger Yusuf Islam - formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens - showed up on a U.S. watch list, federal officials said. One official said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center. TSA was then contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, the official said.
