Robotics: Grow Up!

Robotics: Grow Up! 06/17/2005 07:12 PM
Lance Ulanoff of PC Magazine says, "Robotics: Grow Up!" and then tells the robotics industry to gets its act together. Lance does a great job in bringing to light what's wrong with the robotics industry by recollecting his experiences with a recent robotics trade show. Sadly, a lot of his points are completely correct. The robotics industry appears to be mired in myopic, over- schooled robotic geeks making piddly wall-detection robots that no one wants nor can they sell. His solution? Simplify your robot and run a cost-benefit analysis to see if it will sell. He says the Roomba meets that cost-benefit criterion. Check out the article to find out more about Lance's interesting observations.

IBM on Wireless Robotics 12/31/2004 09:07 PM
IBM has posted a new developerWorks article on wireless robotics. The article explains some of the uses of wireless robotics - either human control of non-autonomous robots or for inter-robot communication between cooperative autonomous robots. It further breaks cooperative robots in marsupial teams where there is a mother-child relationship and competitive teams such as RoboCup soccer robots. A list of pitfalls that may be encountered when using WiFi for wireless robotics is also provided.

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics 02/01/2005 10:05 PM
IBM DeveloperWorks recently posted an article titled, "Migrating from x86 to PowerPC: Robots and networked applications". The article compares the PowerPC (or "Power Architecture" as IBM prefers to call it these days) to traditional Intel x86 and ARM processors. Migrating from one of these architectures to another is actually not too difficult if the software is based on Linux which runs well on all three platforms. Ultra-cheap methods of getting started with PowerPCs are mentioned, such as cannibalizing a Nintendo GameCube console or using a Kuro Box. The author, Lewin A. R. W. Edwards, has published a book with more information on the topic, called A Cookbook for Open-Source Robotics and Process Control.

Zero-g Robotics on an Air Hockey Table 05/28/2004 03:48 PM
Wei-Min Shen and other researchers from the USC Polymorphic Robotics Lab have been looking for a way to simulate zero-g robotics so they can develop autonomous robots that can assemble orbiting solar power stations and do other useful work in space. Their solution? Small robots called "pucks" that hover on a conventional air-hockey table. A new Nature article summarizes their work. The USC PRL website offers video of the puck robots at work including pucks assembling scale girders (MPEG), docking with each other (MPEG), and autonomously navigating (MPEG).

Robotics and the Meaning of Life 07/20/2004 11:18 AM
The Open University in the UK, has found a practical use for Asimov's robot stories. They're being used as part of a robotics class, called Robotics and the Meaning of Life: a practical guide to things that think. The Laws of Robotics are considered in terms of real control architectures such as subsumption and on the practicality of using them to design safe robots. Asimov's Laws are just one part of a larger course that reviews the history and state of the art in robotics from R.U.R. and the Turing Test to Moore's law. Students get hands-on experience using a Lego Mindstorms compatible robotics simulator called OU-Robotlab. Required reading for the course includes Asimov's I, Robot, and Ruth Aylett's Robots: Bringing Intelligent Machines to Life.

Anderson of the Dallas Personal Robotics Group has written a combined review of two books recently added to the DPRG library, "Cambrian Intelligence The Early History of the New AI" by Rodney A. Brooks and "Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots" by Roland Siegwart and Illah R. Nourbakhsh. One of the books is based on the traditional artificial intelligence approach to robotics while the other presents Brook's behavior-based subsumption approach. This difference makes them ideal for a comparative review. Readers may also wish to read the review of the Siegwart and Nourbakhsh book posted last month here on robots.net. Readers wishing to learn more about Brook's ideas should visit his online archive of papers. Read on for the full review.

Mark Frauenfelder: Vex-2 Today, Sam Mahserjian, a marketing manager for RadioShack, came by today to show me the new Vex robotics design system. I don't know much about hobby robotics, but I was really impressed by what I saw here.

The $300 kit, which is already starting to go on sale at RadioShack retail stores, has wheels, spin motors, gears, a programmable microcontroller, servos, a radio receiver, a 6-channel radio transmitter, and tons of Erector-set style hardware for building robots. I like the fact that you are encouraged to cut and bend the metal structural pieces to build you bots. They'll be selling sensors and effectors in the coming months, and the platform will be open enough that lead users will be able to develop and sell aftermarket sensors and components for it.

I want to find out what my garage roboticist buddy, Gareth Branwyn thinks of Vex. I'm going to ask him to write about it for Make.

White Box Robotics Upgrades 04/13/2005 11:07 AM

WHITEBOX.jpgWe’ve talked about White Box Robotics before, but now they’re releasing an advanced robot that is not just a PC case with wheels. The company is teaming up with Frontline Robotics in order to add advanced navigation and sound/video recognition functionality to their barebones PC-BOT. The 9-series can hold Mini-ITX motherboard, laptop hard and optical drives, as well as a few webcams and whatever else you can stuff into its bays.

There are going to be two flavors released May 10, 2005: a hobbyist system that has full motion and vision functionality and a commercial version that allows the 9-series to guard RFID-tagged objects and swarm on intruders. We’re waiting, as always, for the buzzsaw attachment.

KiRo: Robot Foosball Player 09/05/2004 11:09 AM
Roboticists at the University of Freiburg in Germany have perfected a robotic foosball table that allows a human to play against the machine. The intelligent software within the table has two modes; "reactive mode", in which it simple whacks the ball as hard and often as possible, and "strategic mode" in which the software does look-aheads based on the dynamics of the ball. The software never cheats by spinning and yet is able to score as often as once every 36 seconds. The university is licensing the technology to a gaming company, so you may soon be seeing a robot foosball table in a bar or club near you. For more information see the KiRo website or read the research presentation, KiRo - The Table Soccer Robot (PDF format).

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Female Mine Exploration Robot

Female Mine Exploration Robot 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "The grandmother of an engineering student at the University of Arizona has an old mine on her property. What could be inside? Would it be safe to explore it? She -- the student, not the grandmother -- decided it was better to send a robot inside and she teamed with another robotic enthusiast to build a radio-controlled rover to explore the mysteries of the old mine. The 18-inch-long and 7-inch-high robot can communicate with them via a 900 MHz radio modem and send them videos from inside the mine. Theoretically, the robot has a seven-mile range line-of-sight, but the team is not so sure. So the robot is also tied with a rope to pull it out of the mine if necessary, especially if it falls into a big hole. And did I mention this robot is a 'she'? They decided the machine was female "because the rover is independent, sometimes unpredictable and able to do the seemingly impossible" and they called her 'Green Meanie.'" You'll find more technical details and photos in Roland Piquepaille's blog. Jessica Dooley and Keith Brock, who built the robot, are both members of the UA Aerial Robotics Club.

Well anyway, while on the way out of the theatre I saw a poster for the new IRobot movie. I know that this isn't earthshattering news, but hey, the IRobot movie now has its own website according to the poster. Actually, the website has probably been around a while but, well, I finally just noticed it, so I thought I'd share. Looking at the website, I wonder if they're trying to do some sor of weird before the movie stuff like the AI movie did? Like what does it really mean when they say, "What are you going to do with yours?" Also, In other movie news, now that Arnold Swartzenegger is now gov of CA anyone want to take a guess as to whether the remake of WestWorld is still a go? I'm guessing probably not but one can still have some elf holiday spirit hope, can't they?

All 17 different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash.
