Jakob Nielsen's remotes are out of control. I bought the Sony universal remote with the most buttons I could find, and yet it still doesn't have enough buttons to properly control a Sony DVD player (it's missing the prev/next chapter buttons). So you don't even need multi-vendor equipment to suffer from problems.

Queen Elizabeth Pooh-Poohs Sony Remotes

Queen Elizabeth Pooh-Poohs Sony Remotes 06/24/2005 04:03 PM

qeiipod.jpgWow, Sony can't catch a break. First the Queen of England buys an iPod mini. Then, at a luncheon with new Sony CEO Howard Stringer—a known Englishman Welshman (Welsh, English, whatev! Don't make us bomb you.)—the Queen chided him for making products that are difficult to use. "I have a lot of trouble with your remote controls," she's quoted. "Too many arrows."

What Queen Elizabeth II neglected to admit, however, is that due to the long history of in-marriage in the Hapsburg line, she has only a single lobster claw at the tip of each arm.

To control or not to control, that is
the question

The application vendors should do a better job of standardizing default storage locations and names (even as aliases) while still letting users override those choices and pick their own storage metaphor. This isn't nuclear physics - everyone has experience organizing their "stuff" (socks, bills, books, DVDs) so why not a) let them do it and b) use familiar metaphors for it?

A US government out of control

A US government out of control 05/21/2004 11:38 AM
Given the gravity of the global war on terrorism and Iraq, you would think that the government would be willing to hire-in America's best and brightest.  No such luck.  I was talking with a senior government official this morning and he told me that while there is a huge need for high quality/experienced people, he can't hire them.  The reason is two-fold:
  1. In order to qualify for any senior job in the government you need a current security clearance.
  2. He can't interview or reject people hired by contractors that meet the very basic requirements of the job (ie. the most restrictive of which is a security clearance).

The result is that low-quality internal candidates are being pushed up through the US defense establishment to levels of responsibility that exceed their capabilities only due to the fact that they have a current security clearance. You can't fight a war of this magniture with a half-assed effort like this.  This is one of those classic historical warning signs that a system of governance is poised for collapse.  This goes a long way to explaining 9/11, Abu Ghraib, and the other major SNAFUs we have been experiencing.  Expect much more of this in the future.
