World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft 03/14/2005 04:51 PM

World of Warcraft was one of the most highly-anticipated MMORPGs by the time it was finally released. Promising a wide variety of character types, quests, and adventures, it has proven to be a very popular title. For the first time at Ars Technica, we dispatched one of our crack game reviewers to an alternate MMORPG universe to immerse himself in the game and report back on his findings.

Set four years after the events on Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft immerses you in the legendary lands of Azeroth. Lands filled to the brim with adventure, peril and fabulous riches (or so the brochure I got at the airport said).

Along with the strong points of WoW game play, Julian also managed to find a few annoyances, some of which have the potential to adversely affect the quality of game play. Do the bugs outweigh the game's goodness? Check out the review and find out!

World of Warcraft is undergoing testing for a release targeted for the holidays, but beta tester slots are in short supply. In fact, developer Blizzard is no longer accepting applications.

But if you never did get around to applying, you can still get a chance. All you have to do is make yourself a clown for this gentleman's amusement. It's not hard; I've done it several times myself.

Review: World of Warcraft

Review: World of Warcraft 02/05/2005 09:19 PM
Blizzard Entertainment has finally released the long-anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, which I previewed in the July 2004 issue. And I'm happy to report that the finished game pleases on every level. World of Warcraft offers just about everything you could want in an online world. You can set out on epic quests; discover a king's ransom in treasure, magic items, special weapons, and armor; and interact with a parade of player and nonplayer characters. Along your journeys, you'll come across beautifully crafted cities, each with its own architecture, and varied landscapes filled with interesting plants and animals -- many of which want to feast on your flesh.

Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that's already sold more than 600,000 copies since its launch in November. Available for both the Mac and Windows, the game takes players to the world of Azeroth. They create heroic characters of various races and classes as they participate in quests, join guilds, join collaborative parties to fight monsters and more. Now the game is launching in Europe -- Blizzard's European World of Warcraft site states that the official launch occurs on Friday, February 11, 2005.

Differences in the way Macs and PCs render 3D graphics required Blizzard Entertainment to deactivate certain graphics effects in the Mac version of its recently massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft. With the recently released 1.2.1 update that problem has been fixed on certain Mac configurations -- it also contains optimizations that Blizzard says improve frame-rates on some Mac systems.

MSN Beta Search engine closed

MSN Beta Search engine closed 08/18/2004 04:26 PM
Bink is reporting that MSN have shut down their search engine preview. The preview had been made available for members of the public to test it out. Developers left the following message :

"Thank you very much to all of those that tried our service and sent us feedback. We will make improvements based on the suggestions we received. Once we are ready, we will release another preview of our new algorithmic search engine. On a related note, we have a site that has previews and betas of upcoming MSN technologies: The MSN Sandbox. Visit the MSN Sandbox and try out our new MSN product ideas."

Microsoft's search engine is very important to them; the search engine market is one where they face an up-hill battle to win customers back from market leader, Google. Critics of Microsoft's search offering say that their service and results is inferior to that of Google. Clearly, a highly objective issue and something hard to validate either way.

However, one can draw on one very recent example of problems with MSN's existing search offering. A Microsoft technology evangelist, Robert Scoble, posted a blog entry about how the MSN search was superior to that of Google. Giving the example of a query on an API name, his suggestion was that it is not true that developer searches are better on Google than Microsoft. The query, ran on Google, correctly linked users to a relevant MSDN article on it. The MSN search, however, linked straight back to Robert Scobles blog entry on the subject.

Perhaps the system needs just a little more work.

Does Open Source = Closed Mind?

Does Open Source = Closed Mind? 04/15/2005 09:40 AM
After a recent Yankee Group survey found that Linux is more likely to be run in parallel with Windows rather than displace its installed base, analyst Laura DiDio found herself on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse. In a guest column for BetaNews, DiDio discusses the events and asks, "Why would anyone hate an operating system?"

Sun's new licenses: "Closed open source" 03/17/2005 03:42 AM
Sun Microsystems inched closer to a full open source release of Java code Wednesday but, to the surprise of no one, stopped just short of such a landmark deal. Ultimately what transpired -- as explained to media members and analysts via conference call -- was that the Santa Clara, Calif.-based hardware and software company has merely fine-tuned its stance on Java licensing and is finishing up a trio of new, simplified licenses as evidence of its intent to simplify the legalities of enterprise application development.

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).
