Don't blame the technology. A
refreshingly reasonable piece from a mainstream newspaper breaking
down people's fear of technology as a springboard for outright
condemnation of that technology when it's used for
bad things.

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM
For embedded computing
hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating
piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard
drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole
deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash
card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection;
that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device
Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining
feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating
specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard
drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when
necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around
$2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives
instead.

BlackBerry Thumb

For now, you can file the 'Blackberry Thumb' issue
along side the folder where you would have kept your worries about
cellphone radiation, had you not forgotten them since that tumor
pressed too firmly into your hippocampus. Sure, dinking around on
thumbboards probably isn't exactly the optimal use of your opposable
digits, but it's likely no worse than the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb"
that struck down a whole generation of good typists, who now are
cursed with occasional involuntary run-ons of 'ABABSELECTSTART.' Until
this doctor in the UK can actually point to a documented case of
someone suffering from tendentious, I think I'll keep promoting the
thumbboard as one of the best mobile input devices we have
ABABSELECTSTART available. (Thanks, Aaron!)

Replacing The Mouse With Thumb Control
Replacing The Mouse With Thumb Control
04/20/2004 02:00 PM
MIT's Tech Review has a short article about a
new type of mouse replacement that sounds like a fairly
intelligent input device that takes out much of the carpal tunnel risk
by recognizing that simple thumb movements can easily designate where
you want the cursor to move. So, the device is basically a
one-handed, baseless joystick with a flat top where simple thumb
movement designate where to move on the screen without much exertion
or muscle strain. The side of the device contains typical mouse
buttons. Combined with the
Twiddler
one-handed keyboard, and you could have quite the ergonomic solution
to computer input, while also allowing for mobility with wearable type
computers. Of course, as with any such devices, if the learning curve
seems to be too much, it will never catch on. That may be the case
with the one-handed keyboard, but the mouse replacement might not be
such a big stretch.

Apparently, this is a leaked pic of the successor to the Sony Ericsson
P900 (the phone I plan on getting as soon as my first bank-statement
appears and I use it to authenticate myself to the dumbass phone
company that thinks bank-statements are better ID than Canadian
passports). Call it the P901, or the P1000, whatever: it's got a wee
keyboard on the flip-down for those who prefer thumbing out their
executive haiku to scratching at a recalcitrant
handwriting-recognition system. It looks like it might be a photoshop
job, but Rojas at Engadget says that MobileBurn, the source, is
reliable, and I'll take his word for it.

Torvalds Drives A Mac!
03/14/2005 06:07 PMTechnically, it's only an Apple,
since he's running Linux instead of OS X. My first question would
be why bother, since 90% of what makes the machine is the OS. His
response?
As to the why ... Part of it is simply that I wanted to try
something else, and I felt like there were enough people testing the
x86 side that it certainly didn't need me. Part of it is that I
personally believe there are two main architectures out there: Power
and x86-64 are what _I_ think are the two most relevant ones, and I
decided that I had to at least check the other side of it out
seriously if I really believed that.
Fair enough.

The Rest of Sony's USB Drives

I guess that
Pocket Bit Pro 2GB USB hard drive wasn't the only USB device announced
by Sony today, although the rest are these Yet Another Flash Drives,
which Sony has updated across the line. The Pocket Bit U-Mini D
(USM-D) are 30 percent smaller than previous models in sizes up to
256MB. The USM-F include a fingerprint sensor for security, although
it only comes in a 128MB flavor. The USB-BMS is a 128MB model that
includes a Memory Stick PRO slot, which would make it a bit more handy
than just a generic Memory Stick PRO reader, if that's the flash
memory format you're locked into you've chosen. And
finally, the USM-E, which isn't really that special except that it's
the largest of them all, capacity-wise, at 512MB.
