I was going about my usual routine: check email, then NetNewsWire. ReadingEd.com comes up in the list, and bam, I show up on his list of "great sites, mostly web related, that I have found through my server logs." This is such an honor, and a surprise. I'm glad there are people out there that get something from reading my weblog. Thank you, I truly appreciate it!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and thanks for reading my weblog.

An Honor

An Honor 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
I just had the honor of introducing some extraordinary people to a Silicon Valley audience. They were Jim Hake, CEO and founder of Spirit of America, which I wrote about last spring. His operation is bringing help from U.S. citizens to people who need it in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it's worth your time to look at it. The stars of the lunch program, however, were Omar and Mohammed Ali, two of three brothers who have been writing the Iraq the Modelblog for over a year. It's an on-the-ground look at conditions they're seeing in a nation that's seen so much horror. They're working on a citizen journalism project for coverage of the upcoming elections. I wish them well on that and hope I can help in some small way. They have a leg up on this project because there's a new Arabic-language blogging tool, funded by Spirit of America, which will host blogs -- free of charge -- for people in the Arabic-speaking Middle East. Nice work by all.

Tomorrow night's edition of "Nightline&quo t; on ABC will be a departure from the norm: the entire program will consist of Ted Koppel reading the names and showing the pictures of more than 700 US servicemembers killed in Iraq since March 19, 2003. Here's an interview with the Nightline executive producer whose idea it was. The idea is not without controversy: Lisa de Moraes of the WaPo decries it as "a cheap, content-free stunt designed to tug at our heartstrings and bag a big number on the second night of the May ratings race." (Is this really Nielsen-bait?) And the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns eight ABC affiliates, is refusing to air the broadcast, calling it "motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq."

Chrysalis previews their WiFi Seeker, a keychain sized device for instant Wi-Fi signal finding: Chrysalis sent me a demo unit of its just-unveiled WiFi Seeker, which they designed to differentiate 80211b/g networks from other devices. Two previous Wi-Fi signal finders fell short in ways the Seeker does not. The Kensington WiFi Finder is relatively large (credit card sized) and scans before displaying the results instant of a constant active scan--but it can tell Wi-Fi from junk. WFS-1 from SMart ID is much cooler offering a no-industrial-design-intended box with instant scanning--but which "hears" all 2.4 GHz signals the same. object classid="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" codebase="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" height="196" width="232" align="left" hspace="4"> Push the button on the WiFi Seeker and it scans briefly, often under a second, before displaying a signal strength in zero to four LEDs. Keep the button held down and it's a Wi-Fi dowser, allowing you to move around and see immediate response to different signal strengths. It's more directionally sensitive than the WFS-1. Chrysalis will sell the device starting in June for $29.95. Earlier, PC Tel has said they would make the device available to their customers, so one presumes that Chrysalis can sell custom branded versions of the device....

Traffic signal prankster 06/22/2005 01:49 AM
David Pescovitz: A prankster in Sunnyvale, California has been toying with traffic lights across the city for three months. Police say he or she has turned them to face the wrong way, altered the timing, and made them flash red in all directions. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
"There is evidence that whoever is doing it knows what they're doing," (city spokesman John) Pilger said. "The evidence suggests they're an electrician or have that background. This isn't a high school prank."

Further puzzling investigators is the fact the traffic trickster used a cherry-picker truck to reach an overhead signal spanning a busy intersection -- apparently without anyone being any the wiser, Pilger said. What's more, the practical joker has effortlessly opened the control boxes that contain the signals' electronic guts.

The Last Samurai and the Japanese code
    of honor

The Last Samurai and the Japanese code
    of honor
    04/09/2004 03:56 PM

I just finished watching The Last Samurai. I'm not going to comment on the acting or the historical accuracy, but rather on this notion of a code of honor. Several people told me to watch it because they were impressed with the code of honor in the film. I think there is something comforting about codes of honor and people get goose bumps when they see movies where heros die for honor. Some people identify with the heros as they reflect on the unfairness and loneliness in their own lives. A friend of mine manages the rights to Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, which is one of Japan's most famous heros. He used to get calls almost every year from CEOs of companies wanting to make the film because they realized that THEY were Musashi.

The most honorable person I've ever known is my mom. She didn't talk about or whine about honor. She was just honorable. In my experience, the more people talk about honor, the less they know about it and are either using it as a way to try to convince you to trust them or trying to convince themselves or something. Some of the stupidest mistakes I've made in friendship and business have been when I have assumed that people spouting off about codes of honor would actually adhere to them. "Don't you trust me?" "Just trust me." Bah.

So I'm quite skeptical about Japanese honor. Sure, I bet there were a lot of honorable people though the history of the Samurai, but I see honor every day and they don't make movies about it. So stop making movies about Japanese honor or we might start believing it.

I'm not bashing the notion of codes of honor in organizations since I think it's often necessary to try to aspire to and enforce higher level conduct in these organizations, but having a code doesn't mean everyone will adhere to it and such codes probably cause these organizations to be more trusted than they should.
