Capt Xerox sez, "What do James Tiptree Jr. and Orson Scott Card have
in common? It's certainly not their writing styles, but they do share
the same birthday. After the success of last year's free science
fiction calendar, the Website at the End of the Universe is offering a
new one for 2005. Each page has a list of famous science fiction
authors' and artists' birthdays for that month. This year's artwork
features covers from the ever-popular line of Ace Doubles. Each month
highlights a cover of a book's author who was born in that month."

01/02/2004 01:17 PM How I Met
And Dated Miss Emily Dickinson: Have you ever wondered what a
favourite writer really looked like? Is there any relationship between
an artist's face and their art? Hemingway looks like his prose; Ezra
Pound like his poetry; Picasso is a dead ringer for his paintings but,
say, John Updike doesn't resemble his fiction; T.S.Eliot looks like a
bank clerk and Matisse was nothing like his works. How superficial
can you get? [

Microsofts Inner Circle & Swarming
Posted Mar 5, 2004, 3:13 PM ET by Judith Meskill
CNET News writers Ina Fried and Michael Kannellos report on
Microsofts TechFest in Microsoft wants to know who your friends are.
They talk about Lili Chengs Inner Circle concept
which maintains, updates, lists, and monitors your top 20 email
contacts. Your inner circle not the people who write to you and
often go unanswered, but the people that you reach out to and
communicate with most consistently. Lili Cheng says that Inner
Circles set of rules would be based on our behavior.
This article also makes brief mention of Microsofts
Swarm project the effort is basically akin to
a mailing list for short cell phone messages. A group of friends can
subscribe to a list. When someone wants to let the group in on some
info, he or she sends a text message to a number that redirects the
message to the phone of everyone on the list.
Where is your inner circle most effectively reflected?
In your email and instant messaging contacts? On your weblog
blogroll or in your news reader feeds? On your cell
phones itemized calls list? In your skype roll? In
the maillists or IRC channels you frequent? In the multitudes of YASNS
you have joined? In your photo albums online or offline? A
combination of the above? None of the above? All of the above?
Who are the current creators of the super application
that will help track our inner circles across all forms of
communications modes and devices? And then how will we control
or own these invaluable aggregated snapshots of our most
intimate groups? [The
Social Software Weblog]

Al-Jazeera, best known in
the West for reporting on the Taliban and US-Iraq war, has, today,
been
approved to broadcast in Canada, amidst
complaints from Jewish groups, such as the
B'nai
Brith, who are worried the content may be anti-semetic. What
makes this interesting? Al-Jazeera will be one of the few news
stations in Canada specifically warned by the Canadian government that
it must censor itself for content.

Friendship Circle
Friendship Circle
02/10/2004 03:02 AM
One of the common weaknesses of existing social network services is
the lack of easy
flexible ways to differentiate types or depth of friendship.
Orkut, for example,
allows one to group friends but also requires one to name
each group.
While this requirement seems trivial and makes sense logically, it
deters users from
using the feature in practice.
Friendship Circle is a way to express types and depths of
friendship with minimal
effort. A Friendship Circle is basically a nested rings of
people (represented
by icons with miniture photo and name) around a person. To
use the Friendship
Circle, the user drag and drops icons from a palette of friends to
the circle.
Note that this can be done using DHTML+CSS.
Distance away from the center represent depth of friendship.
So the innermost
ring is populated by family members, relatives, and best
friends. The outermost
ring is populated by people whom you don't really care about (i.e.
connection-addicts).
Angle of placement on a ring is used to express types of
friendship. To help
the user, the rings are divided into four lightly colored
quadrants: red, blue, green,
and yellow. Red and blue quadrants will most likely be used
to hold people with
personal and business relationships.
Update:
I drew up a mockup of Friendship Circle for those having trouble
visualizing from
my description.

that the convention is a "live TV show" as if this were a good thing.
Then they brought out Pultizer-prize-winning AP legend, Walter Mears
who started a blog for the AP yesterday. A blogger asked why the Big
Media have cut back their Convention coverage. "We'd love a convention
where decisions are made," he said. But conventions today are just
scripted media events. So, there we have the irony in the space of
