Internet Research: Privacy, Ethics and Alienation – An Open Source Approach by David M. Berry
http://opensource.m it.edu/papers/berry2.pdf

Abstract:
This paper examines some of the ethical problems involved in undertaking Internet research and draws on historical accounts as well as contemporary studies to offer an analysis of the issues raised. It argues that privacy is a misleading and confusing concept to apply to the Internet, and that the concept of non-alienation is more resourceful in addressing the many ethical issues surrounding Internet research. Using this as a basis, the paper then investigates the Free/Libre and Open Source research model and argues for the principles of ‘open source ethics’ in researching the online world, which includes a participatory and democratic research method.

I don't mind sharing Internet access but
what about the files on my computers?
02/17/2004 12:58 PM
Hi, i have just bought a wireless router and pc card to use at home (my laptop and stationary). I had heard about War chalking so did a search to see how safe it was to use this WLAN. To be honest, i am scared of installing it now. I absolutely don't mind my neighbours being able to connect to the internet through my WLAN, actually I think I might even go and put a letter through theri letter box informing them about it, but before i do i just want to clear a couple of things up: -- Just because they can access the Internet through my WLAN, can they see all the files on my computer. The thing is that I have 3 computers at home and I still want them to be able to share files. I don't think any of my neighbours are seriel hackers but hey, if the info is staring you in them in the face they just might be tempted to look. If i am honest, i think i would. -- Will this drastically slow down my internet connection? Thanks guys, i am just a newby to the WLAN world so please gentle :-

Apple files lawsuit over Internet leak
of new products
12/19/2004 02:50 PM
Apple Computer Inc. is suing anonymous people who leaked details about new products by posting information on the Internet, Reuters is reporting today. According to Reuters, Apple said in the seven-page civil complaint which it filed on December 13 that it did not know the "true names or capacities, whether individual, associate, corporate or otherwise," of the defendants. Once they have been discovered, the Cupertino, California-based company said it would amend the complaint. The complaint alleges that “an unidentified individual, acting alone or in concert with others, has recently misappropriated and disseminated through Web sites confidential information about an unreleased Apple product. To succeed, Apple must develop innovative products and bring those products to market in advance of its competitors. If Apple competitors were aware of Apple's future production information, those competitors could benefit economically from that knowledge by directing their product development or marketing to frustrate Apple's plans.” "Apple has filed a civil complaint against unnamed individuals who we believe stole our trade secrets and posted detailed information about an unannounced Apple product on the Internet," the company said in a statement provided to Reuters. "Apple's DNA is innovation and the protection of our trade secrets is crucial to our success."

Fourteen Percent of Internet Users No Longer Donload Music Files
http://ww w.pewinternet.org/reports/toc.asp?Report=122

The recording industry campaign against those who download and swap music online has made an impact on several major fronts, but the number of Americans downloading music and sharing files online has increased, according to the most recent survey of the Pew Internet & American Life Project. The Project’s national phone survey of 1,371 adult Internet users conducted between February 3 and March 1, 2004 shows that 14% of online Americans say that at one time in their online lives they downloaded music files, but now they no longer do any downloading. That represents more than 17 million people. However, the number of people who say they download music files increased from an estimated 18 million to 23 million since the Project’s November-December 2003 survey. This increase is likely due to the combined effects of many people adopting new, paid download services and, in some cases, switching to lower-profile peer-to-peer file sharing applications.
