Plasticom's use of the Morph Age 2.0 engine, the results are rendered

Fashion Forward Nokia 6600 in Awful
Movie
09/09/2004 11:12 AM
I didn't really want to see that new movie "Cellular"
before, but after hearing that it's about "getting [viewers] to
identify with the frustrations of the police officer as he attempts to
track down and rescue Ms. Basinger" using a crappy Nokia cellphone, I
sort of started thinking that was maybe a little too close to real
life to want to have to experience vicariously. The portrayal of
cellular service - including the customer service - is apparently so
awful in the movie that none of the American carriers approached
allowed their service to be used in the film. I wonder if Kim Basinger
sort of freaks out in the movie and twitches a lot like she does in
real life? I would maybe pay to watch that.

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA
06/28/2004 09:35 PM
It catches eyes, that's for
sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software
before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an
unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost
two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of
LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than
the airline magazine.
"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast
to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly
is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great
display, awful DRM
07/02/2004 01:11 PM
Yuri Kageyama writes a glowing
review of Sony's new ebook reader, which uses a new kind of display
technology that rivals paper.I agree with Kageyama's assessment about
the display technology. I played with a Librie when I was in Tokyo
last month. The screen is remarkable. The display uses little balls
that are painted black and white, containing the same pigments found
in laser printer toner cartridges for black, and in sunblock and paint
for white. Once you turn on the display and a page of text or graphics
appear, it doesn't need refreshing. The only time the batteries get
used is when you load a new page. (The
technology was
developed by a U.S. company, E-Ink.) I did notice that sometimes you
could see the ghost of the previous page, especially on model I tried
that had a comic book loaded on it. I wonder if that's a general
problem, or if the one I played with was a dud?
I didn't Kageyama wasn't harsh enough about the hideous
proprietary locked format the Librie uses for books. He wrote, "I'm
not wild about buying books that self-destruct after 60 days." This
self-destruct feature is sickening. Who would buy a Librie with this
deadly defect built in? (Sony is making a similar mistake with its
music players.) I hope somebody with a sensible DRM policy starts
using these great display screens. Link

Plastic Muscles Get Stronger
Plastic Muscles Get Stronger
03/08/2004 11:16 PMWired has an article talking about how electroactive polymers
(EAPs) have gotten stronger and longer lasting. EAPs have gotten
strong enough to have a practical self contained robot (NiTi never has
gotten this strong). These muscles rival motors in that they're very
quiet and very strong and now long lasting enough to use as fans in
computers. EAPs can expand to 5 times their size, a feat unproducible
by piezoelectric materials. Of course these new EAPs have the Navy's
attention. Look for plastic muscles in your robot's future!?
Plastic that changes shape with light
Plastic that changes shape with light
04/14/2005 03:48 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Shape memory alloy, materials that change shape based on a temperature
increase, are old news for roboticists. But MIT scientists have
developed a new plastic that shapeshifts in response to light. From
the MIT News Office:
These programmed materials change shape when struck by light at
certain wavelengths and return to their original shapes when exposed
to light of specific different wavelengths.
The discovery, to be reported in the April 14 issue of Nature, could have potential
applications in a variety of fields, including minimally invasive
surgery. Imagine, for example, a "string" of plastic that a doctor
could thread into the body through a tiny incision. When activated by
light via a fiber-optic probe, that slender string might change into a
corkscrew-shaped stent for keeping blood vessels open.

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?
If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?
03/22/2005 05:03 PMWired Magazine is now suggesting that
discs
are dead as a storage medium. With all the battling going on over
the next generation of DVD technology, Wired's products editor, Robert
Capps, notes that not very many people seem to care about the new
"high definition" audio CDs that have come out. Instead, everyone's
focused on getting an iPod and digitizing their music. While video is
definitely more difficult to transport via the internet, the argument
is that the technology is improving for compressing and transmitting
larger files. Of course, it might be interesting to put Capps in a
debate with Mark Cuban -- who also thinks that discs are dead, but
that
portable
hard drives or flash drives will take their place. Cuban's
argument is that "storage is expanding far more quickly than upload or
download speeds to our homes," so it's going to be more efficient to
move around hard drives than bits of high definition content. With
some already experimenting with
offer
ing content on iPods, it is beginning to look like this battle for
the next plastic disc technology may be a waste of time.
Update: Then again, some analysts think
discs will be big business for
the next five years. Of course, analysts always seem to be overly
positive in their predictions -- it's what helps sell reports.

Surgery April 12
Surgery April 12
04/10/2004 12:50 PMOn April 12 I'm scheduled for
anterior cervical decompression and fusion. As nervous as I am
about the surgery, I'm actually looking forward to it. I've been in
pain for close to two months now, and recently it has become almost
unbearable, so I'm glad relief is coming soon. Although I've felt
worse pain before (for example, I once had stitches in my head without
anesthesia, which kinda' stung), this is the first (and hopefully
last) time I've experienced chronic pain, and it
really consumes your life.
It will be a few weeks before I'll fully return to work, but I
should be able to handle light typing within a few days. In the
meantime, I plan to recover by eating several buckets of ice cream and
finally watching every DVD I've ordered from Amazon.com but never had
time to watch :)
Ouch. Looks like I need surgery.
Ouch. Looks like I need surgery.
04/09/2004 04:03 PMThis morning I had separate visits with a physiatrist and a
neorosurgeon, and both are recommending that I undergo surgery
as soon as possible. Apparently, my cervi
cal disk herniation is worse than I thought, and the pinched nerve
is causing muscle atrophy and weakness in my arm. Left unchecked, it
could result in permanent damage.
I'm still researching my options, but I'm fairly certain that
surgery is in my future, possibly as early as next week. Man, it's
hard to believe that a few weeks ago I was enjoying running 8-10 miles
at a time, and now I'm flat on my back looking at surgery.

Rotator cuff surgery
06/12/2004 09:54 PMThis surgical video is not for the faint of heart, but it is
fascinating to watch that little, whirling blade flense away all that

back bits, this video compells me -- it would be so boss to just have
someone jam some fiber optics and a Dremel tool into my shoulder and
just grind off all the troublesome tissue.
About 9 years ago my dad was needing some relief from persistent
shoulder pain. After the fun and joys of X-rays and MRI's he elected
to have surgery to correct a bone spur that had literally torn the
innards of his rotator cuff apart.
