Call for better broadband content

Call for better broadband content 02/10/2004 10:39 AM
Better content and not just faster internet connections is needed to drive up take-up of broadband, say MPs.

Should Broadband Providers Offer
Content?

Should Broadband Providers Offer
Content?
04/19/2004 12:26 PM
Apparently, the talk of a recent broadband conference was on how broadband providers needed to focus on charging for "premium" content to expand their business, which seems to miss the point (once again) of broadband services. The content that draws people is already out there, and bundling it with an internet connection only serves to add one more mouth to feed out of a small pie - and doesn't help anyone make much money. When broadband providers look at providing content, they immediately fall back into the "broadcast" mindset, where users are passive consumers of content that is pushed to them. That's not what people use the internet for. They use it for interactive services (such as email, web surfing, VoIP and file sharing), where they get to choose the content and what they do with it. At the conference, they even had people saying that SBC's latest deal with CinemaNow (to offer downloadable movies) was a huge step forward. This is the same CinemaNow that hasn't received much traction at all and has been reviewed (repeatedly) as being a terrible waste of money. The article quotes CinemaNow's competitor MovieLink as putting the blame for their failures on the broadband providers. They claim that the two movie services "offer up plenty of content," even though reviewers of the service have complained about their "pathetically thin selection." Ignoring that, however, the quote from MovieLink's CEO pins the blame on broadband providers for not making it easier for users to move movies from their PC to their television using wireless connectivity. Of course, both MovieLink and CinemaNow use heavy-handed copy protection that probably has a lot more to do with the difficulty than the broadband service providers and their support of WiFi. Instead of focusing on ways to turn broadband connections into another TV (we already have those), they should be focused on the services (not content) that people want.

Playlist is the new medium

Playlist is the new medium 08/17/2004 03:24 PM

Lucas Gonze writes....

Playlis t Magazine. What strikes me is the continued rise of the playlist meme. The playlist -- not the MP3 -- is the new unit of delivery after the 78, the LP, and the CD.

Marc expands upon......

Or maybe it's 'collections' - 'cause let's not forget the visual folks.

Technically it's a list of unique URLs (called URIs) of individual image sequences (video, animation, slide show) or audio items - all having a name, length, order position and any other sort of meta data - attached.

I remember first understanding this - back when I was learning OOP. Everything was an object, you double clicked on the object to learn about it and you lined them up (sequenced them) - into an EDL (edit decision list) - which we then mapped onto a timeline.

So now - MP3 playlists are the cat's meow.

Coolio.

Let's standardize the schema, come up with some APIs to access it and add it to the Open-Media.org base specs.

The Unhappy Medium. If you like modern silent films like Doc Hammer's Rub, linked here previously, you may also enjoy the work of Chelsea Spear. Her Alphabet is a short about math, music and a precocious child, while The Unhappy Medium, set in the 1920's, is about spiritualism, fraud, adults and children. And some good news for the would-be filmmaker: Kodak still makes Super-8 film, and there are plenty of cameras both old and new available.

Is Forgoing Digital for Medium Format
for You?

It seems as though everyone in photography is moving to digital. Consumer digital cameras will outsell film cameras this year. Even professionals are moving into digital; photojournalism is practically all digital now. I have followed the development of digital cameras quite closely since first digital SLRs (those big cameras with changeable lenses) came out. As a prosumer and someone who is critical of quality of enlargements I have been saying that I will move to digital when an affordable 8 megapixel SLR comes out. Recently Canon delivered with their EOS-1D Mark II priced at around $3000. Now would be a good time to move to digital as a serious amateur photographer. Instead, I'm moving to medium format. Should you?

Gmail As Storage Medium in Linux

Gmail As Storage Medium in Linux 08/29/2004 09:11 PM
Some people might say the 1GB space Gmail is offering to it's users is way too much for the average email-user, Richard Jones however found another way to use Gmail. He's using it as a storage medium for himself.

Using a self written program called GmailFS it allows one to store files using the 'normal' file operations such as; read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.).

On Jones' website you can read more about it and how to use and install GmailFS, which he claims to be his first program coded in Python. It's just the question what Google thinks of this, as this may lead to the storage of applications or other copyrighted material on Google's servers. Something they would definitely NOT be proud of.

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PM
Major League Baseball made news last year for claim ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content provider paying a huge upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course, the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans, which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to pick up new fans.
