Should Barbelith start a gaming forum?

Should Barbelith start a gaming forum? 06/05/2005 10:48 PM

Are there many decent online communities out there concerned with the thorough discussion of the aesthetic, narrative, psychological, theoretical, philosophical and economical implications of games and gaming (both online or offline)? Or are they all about asking questions about where you use the green key and how to kill the end of level boss? I know of a fair number of people who are fascinated by the cultural implications of gaming (Ben Cerveny, Stewart Butterfield and Alice Taylor leap straight to mind). I also know of a fair number of decent weblogs around the subject, including The Ludologist (best Economist design-rip off ever) and the Terra Nova folks. But what I don't know of any good communities for these higher level discussions.

Folks on Barbelith are trying to work out at the moment whether to start such a forum. The board already has a more-engaged-than-normal clientele and the level of discussion is generally pretty good, so I suspect we could make a go of something fairly classy, but it would be a hell of a lot easier if there was an acknowledged need for a space for a community of intellectual gaming enthusiasts to colonise. Anyone out there got any opinions or recommendations? it would really help us inform this debate...

The Western European mobile content market has been slow to take off, reaching just EUR2.3 billion in 2003, well behind Japan and Korea. Revenues could reach EUR15.0 billion by 2009 if operators resolve pricing and billing issues. New services are taking centre stage, such as mobile music, video clips and downloadable information applications. Java will increasingly displace SMS and WAP as the method of delivery for text-based information. Report includes forecasts for service adoption, spend, ARPU and revenue in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK and Western Europe as a whole. [PRWEB Dec 19, 2004]

Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
I've complained in the past about the annoyanc e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo, the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco over at CBS Marketwatch has noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is collecting public information. However, if the info was given to an individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.

Bush and The Blizzard of '04

Bush and The Blizzard of '04 08/28/2004 11:59 PM
The Republican National Conventions isn't the only worrisome thing going on in New York at the moment, though you won't hear about this one in the media for awhile. Perhaps you never will. Perhaps the fix is in on this topic as well. I'm talking about the interesting fact that, along with the Republican National Convention, New York is being hit with a cocaine epidemic that is even worse than the snowstorm that gripped this town during the mid to latter 80's. (During the last Bush administration, to put a finer point on it.) This time there won't be a crack problem to get all racist about, however. Cocaine in New York is now so cheap and plentiful that such economic measures as cooking it down to crack need not be taken by the poor. People who learned better 20 years ago are suddenly snorting blow again. People you would never think would mess with this stuff are messing with it big time. Once again one commonly sees lines on the tabletops and the frantic eyes you can never make contact with. I was in a club the other night that was full as a tick with beautiful-looking people pharmaceutically disabled from beholding one another's beauty. At the same time that the white death has made such a roaring comeback, the drugs that I think are relatively harmless, pot and the psychedelics, are in extremely short supply. Pot is selling at cocaine prices, a hundred dollars a gram sometimes. And coke is selling at pot prices. An ounce of coke would cost about the same as an ounce of decent sensimilla a few years ago. Mushrooms are scarce. LSD is functionally off the market. What's going on? One is tempted to wonder if the CIA might not be back in the drug trafficking game, though I was never completely convinced that they were last time. As I say, there does seem to be an interesting correlation between cocaine epidemics and Bush administrations. But then, cocaine is a Republican drug. It makes its users self-obsessed, aggressive, and greedy. It plays hell with one's sense of consequence. It's generally preferred by people who have more money than humanity. And, best of all, the weirdos and peaceniks who like to waste their useless time stoned on marijuana or psychedelics, tend to hate it. ("All the more for us, eh, Buffy?) Trouble is, even if you disapprove of cocaine, you're not certain to turn down every line you get offered, especially it's everywhere and if all the other recreational confusicants save booze (the other Republican drug) have been eliminated from the market. Once again, one can see clearly what the War on Some Drugs is really about. It's the culture, stupid. It certainly isn't about public safety, since coke and booze are the perfect combination for social depravity of all sorts. Instead, it provides a beautiful opportunity to jail the blacks and hippies who prefer the non-Republican drugs. It makes huge bank for one's wing-tipped colleagues. Can it really be that the Bush Administration has decided to turn a blind eye to blow? Or is it that they are simply too incompetent, despite turning Columbia into a war zone. Maybe this is just a local phenomenon, arising from the fact that approximately 10,000 New York police officers, who ordinarily focus on narco crime, have been diverted to convention patrol. Whatever the cause. it is clear that one of the few ways in which the Republicans will be likely made welcome here at the moment will be with the plentiful availability of one of their favorite drugs (along with alcohol, money, and power.) Just what we need, a whole arena packed with irritable, glaze-eyed folks who are even more certain of their superiority than usual. Not to mention volatile. Might we be treated to the spectacle of rioting Republicans before it's all over with? I certainly hope so....

Selling snowballs in a blizzard

Selling snowballs in a blizzard 12/11/2003 10:46 PM
During last week's NYC snowstorm, an entrepreneur set up shop in Times Square, selling snowballs for $1/pop.
The young man was Gilberto Triplitt, a 28-year-old unemployed artist from Queens who attended LaGuardia High School and worked in a furniture store until it closed in the post-Sept. 11 downturn. He went into the snowball business Monday afternoon on Prince St. in SoHo. He reported selling six in 2-1/2 hours.

"It's really easy to sell them," he said, to a reporter's surprise.

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
05/03/2004 05:18 AM
Cable providers in the US took an early lead in the broadband market, though they've lost a little ground lately due to cut rate prices for DSL from the telcos. However, the cable providers are looking to pull an ace out of their sleeve by promoting their ability to easily provide the coveted "triple play" of voice, video and data through one single company. Many cable providers have been able to do this for a while, but they haven't spent much time promoting their phone service. That's about to change. While the telcos are still struggling to figure out their video strategy (TV over DSL? partner with a satellite provider?), the cable companies are getting ready to heavily promote their VoIP phone plans in conjunction with their TV and broadband connections. They admit that most people still don't know the cable company offers phone service, but they aim to change that soon. Beyond just getting more money out of each subscriber, it also means much less churn for the cable companies, as studies have shown that the likelihood of a customer switching providers drops drastically for each additional service they receive from their provider. While the article doesn't mention much about pricing, it would make sense for the cable companies to cut the prices on the phone service drastically. The additional cost to the companies isn't that high, and undercutting the telcos in their core market has to hurt them. Besides, as the article points out, choosing a phone company is much more of an "emotional" decision than choosing a broadband provider. If the cable companies can win over the emotions of people with very low priced calling plans, they'll more than make up the difference in new customers for their broadband and video services - and the resulting lack of churn.

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
Barry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman" companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire non-travel companies. So, in order to prove that he's not running a travel company... he's going to show them what it means to really run a travel company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella. Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't as high as he had hoped.
