03/19/2003 10:44 PMNow and again, when I have time, I like to write little funny stories.
I don’t actually have time to write one right now, but I figured
I’d point to a few of them, in case you’re relatively new
to my weblog and may have missed them.
Here’s one, probably the most popular, on doing
bong hits with Bill
Gates.
My personal favorite is on how
it’s so hard to
teach squirrels to play baseball.
Here’s my
BBEdit
song.
Here’s one on the inherent evil of
that Three Dog Night
song Joy to the World.
Then there’s my list of
top ten really mean
put-downs.
Though it’s not terrifically funny, I like it as a rant: how I
don’t want
wearable computers.
Here’s a post on how I like to
say inappropriate
things. I compare a part of my anatomy to a roll of duct tape.
Another personal favorite is
Frank, a fable.

09/16/2004 05:11 PMLast week,
Salon documented the
"opportunity costs" of the administration's decision to invade Iraq --
what the country could have done instead with all the resources we've
committed to the war so far. Depressingly, the list of under-funded
projects includes many vital domestic security programs that would
seem to be far more effective in contributing to the safety of the
United States than the toppling of Saddam Hussein -- for instance,
bolstering the security of sea ports, airports, and fully funding
police and fire departments.

Sesame Street's greatest moments
Sesame Street's greatest moments
04/07/2005 09:52 AMCory Doctorow:
25 Of My Favorite Sesame Street Memories is a lovely, lavishly
illustrated essay that's pretty much what is says on the label:
wistful funny essays about 25 great moments in Sesame Street history.
Guy Smiley has a huge & rather odd resume. Among the shows he's hosted
are one in which a baby has to pick out its grandmother among an old
lady and a mustachioed man & dog with wigs on, one in which all the
correct answers are "Triangle," & the "Here Is Your Life" series of
reunion specials. Anyone & anything, from an oak tree to Forgetful
Jones had their own "Here Is Your Life" special, but my favorite was
the one for Sneaker, an old, worn out, red Chuck Taylor lost in the
back of a closet until the day Guy Smiley decided he deserved a
tribute. Sneaker was visited by his designer, his shoemaker, his owner
(represented by her bare feet & legs rolled up like she's expecting a
flood in her closet), & his left counterpart (who was bought by a
sculptor & bronzed as part of an abstract statue).
In the end, Sneaker found himself lonely after reliving his memories,
& wasn't looking forward to an eternity at the back of the closet.
That's when Oscar shows up & offers to add Righty to his rotten
sneaker collection... but not before he receives a complimentary
memory book & official Guy Smiley ankle bracelet!
Sneaker makes the list mostly because gutting the soles of my old
Chucks & gluing two halves of a ping pong ball onto the tongue is on
my eternal to-do list.

"Innovative, enthusiastic and excited about their profession, 'the
new generation of librarians is really starting to take hold,' said
Steven Cohen, a law librarian at Rivkin Radler in Uniondale....
One time he was able to help the firm get a jump on a case when he
discovered an article that reported one of its clients was being sued,
before either the client or his lawyer knew about it. 'I printed it
out and I ran down the hall and handed it to his attorney and said,
'They've been sued,' he recalled. The attorney was able to inform the
client before he found out from someone else and get right to work.
'The lawyers were running down the hall screaming, 'Cohen did it!
Cohen found the case!' That was a good day. It is so great being able
to bring them the information.' " [Newsday]

I will be working with the Public Library Association on
an official weblog (you heard that right - official). We will be
kicking it off by reporting on PLA-related events at ALA Midwinter.
This is going to be huge. Very huge. There will be photographs. There
will be interviews with presenters, attendees, exhibitors, and PLA
members. There will be reports from the meetings (if allowed), keynote
addresses, dinner meetings and networking functions. There will
hopefully be special reports from committee members. My point? We're
going to blog it and we're going to blog hard. And, we're going to do
it right.
Why do I say we? Because I need your help.
I am looking for a bunch of people (20 or so) who will be willing
to report on the conference and post to the PLA
blog....

big. Congratulations, Steven - way to go!

I used to be famous
03/06/2004 01:49 AM
[Scripting News]
Back in the late 80's and early 90's - I used to be famous.
Since I left Macromedia in 1991 - I have been investing
in and building what I believe in - which turns out to be something
called "digital lifestyle aggregators".
And now it looks like the rest of the world has caught up to me.I
have developed this uncanny knack of clearly seeing what baby steps
are necessary to 'boil this ocean' and I'm
hoping that by building alliances, deals and incestuos
relationships I can bring a rebirth to my company - Broadband Mechanics - in
2004.
Laszlo is shipping the rich
media platform - we were working on for years, while Tribe has shown what coolio social
networks can be like, and a business model which can anchor a
federated social network. Tony Perkin's AlwaysOn
Network is proving that social networking is just a raising of the
bar - and that it effects ALL markets, while the system I
just designed for XXXX (can't disclose yet!) will
finally show the world what digital lifestyle aggregation is all
about.
This is all a culmination of what I've been working towards for 13
years. And if you think about it - the timing is just
perfect - right about.......... now. No I mean....... now. Now.
Well - whenever it comes, we're not too far off right now - if
you just combine:
- PeopleAggregator, WebOutliner
- MediaChest, Flickr, Orkut, Tribe, Ryze,
Yafro, Fotonotes, Fotolog, ODDpost,
- W4, blogrolling, technorati, Internet Topic Exchange, AlwaysOn
Network Zaibatsu
- RVW, ENT 1.0, OPML, XML-RPC, RSS
- UpComing,
ecto, FOAF-a-matic, Laszlo's SoundBlox
- TypePad, Blogware,
- Windows Longhorn, Apple's iLife
- Yahoo Groups, MyYahoo, Yahoo Mail and Launch (or yah - don't
forget GeoCities)
Hopefully all of these web servcies, tools and systems will
inter-connect together - to provide us with the future we all deserve
and need.
This time around it's got to be based upon an open, decentralized,
semantic, service oriented, fun world.

Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS
Steven Frank’s tip for improving
your RSS
01/18/2004 06:02 PMSteven Frank has a great
simple tip for
improving your RSS: subscribe to your own feed (or feeds).
What if your feed appears weird, or doesn’t appear at all, in
NetNewsWire? Validate it. Ctrl-click on the subscription and choose
Validate this Feed. (Yes, this command should also be in the main
menu. In the future it will be.)
It the feed is valid, but NetNewsWire does something strange, then let
us know about it: it’s mostly likely a bug.
But if the feed is not valid, you have a few options for fixing it:
1. If you’re running your own software, then you may have a bug
to fix.
2. If you’re running someone else’s software, but
you’re using a customized template or script to generate your
feed, check your work.
3. If you’re running someone else’s software, but you
haven’t customized anything, report a bug to the person or
company who created your software. Be sure to include the URL of your
feed, so they can validate it too and see what the problem is.
(Important: be nice. Software has bugs. Most developers are
conscientious and work hard at fixing bugs.)

Steven Levy on Trusted Computing
12/11/2003 09:38 AMSteven Levy, author of
Hackers and
Crypto, has a fantastic piece on Newsweek's site about the
potential dangers of Trusted Computing.
How could the freedom genie be shoved back into the bottle?
Basically, it's part of a huge effort to transform the Net from an
arena where anyone can anonymously participate to a sign-in affair
where tamperproof "digital certificates" identify who you are. The
advantages of such a system are clear: it would eliminate identity
theft and enable small, secure electronic "microtransactions," long a
dream of Internet commerce pioneers. (Another bonus: arrivederci,
unwelcome spam.) A concurrent step would be the adoption of "trusted
computing," a system by which not only people but computer programs
would be stamped with identifying marks. Those would link with
certificates that determine whether programs are uncorrupted and
cleared to run on your computer.
