Microsoft has said that this beta represents a subset of what will be released when this software is finalized sometime during the first half of 2004. We tested the new software on a couple of test machines, and found it to be very reliable during a couple of days use. It's not recommended that you install this beta in a production environment, however.

PC Magazine: Windows XP SP2 Has a Dangerous Hole. Windows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an opportunity to do damage without being detected.

Robert Scoble gave me a hard time when I advised people to wait a little while to install SP2. I'm still waiting a little longer. (Of course, I have a serious firewall already installed, and take other security measures, and one of the reasons to use SP2 is its enhanced security features, which are clearly better than what Microsoft was selling in XP and XP SP1.)
