“A TiVo-style digital video system designed for police cruisers is making it easier for officers on patrol to make charges stick against lawbreakers and avoid frivolous lawsuits. The Tyler Police Department in East Texas recently outfitted its 60 patrol cars with dash-mounted systems, saying the technology helps catch criminals in the act and, over the long term, saves money. Tyler, a city of about 83,000 people some 90 miles east of Dallas, is one of…

The police blotter often makes the most
interesting reading
12/12/2003 06:36 PM
Mr. Mopps is the children's toy and book store around the corner from my house. It is often crowded, and the salespeople are usually extremely rude and unhelpful. Still, it's convient, the toys aren't totally segregated by gender, and I like that it isn't a chain, so I do a fair bit of my holiday shopping there (this year I managed to take care of all the cousins in one trip!). While I understand the impulse to attack somebody while shopping there, so far I've managed to avoid doing so. I wonder what caused this woman to snap? From today's Berkeley Daily Planet Woman Attacks Two In Bookshop, Ends Up Bloody in the Street A woman inexplicably attacked two shoppers with her bare hands at early Tuesday afternoon at Mr. Mopps ... Police said they arrived at the store to find the woman getting into her car parked outside the store. Berkeley BPD spokesperson Kevin Schofield said that when police ordered her out of the car, she pulled the car out, striking one officer in the leg. Police at the scene quickly boxed in the car with three patrol cars, then approached her again and demanded she leave her vehicle, Schofield said. ... The police spokesman said that when the woman continued to violently resist, several officers pinned her on the pavement and held her there until the could confine her in a velcro binding called The Wrap. One of the most interesting things about the police blotter is all the things that are left out. Who did the woman attack? Why did she attack them? Did she buy anything? What on earth is The Wrap? Cross posted at the Berkeley Blog. Happy holiday shopping to you....

From Text To Audio To Video... Easy
Creation Makes Its Mark

From Text To Audio To Video... Easy
Creation Makes Its Mark
04/05/2005 04:42 AM
Citizen journalism is a term that's getting a lot of attention these days, but citizen media may be the real trend under way. It seems that the tools of media creation are getting easier and cheaper every day. Blogs did it for text; podcasting (though, vast ly overhyped by some) is trying to get there with audio -- and the next obvious place is video. Podcasting may still be getting its sea legs, but Google is already looking to archive and search personal videos from individuals. Touted as video blogging, the service will allow the public to submit their video take, or takes, as it were, for public consumption -- which sounds somewhat similar to the recently launched Our Media project, by Brewster Kahle's Web Archive. Meanwhile, receiving even more attention today, web-based TV network Current -- the youth-oriented venture spearheaded by Al Gore -- will put its spin on the same concept with news segments on the latest buzz, as determined by Google search data. The progression seems natural, if not inevitable -- cheaper tools of production allowing anyone to create media. Text is the easiest, but it's not hard to see audio and video following. Giving amateurs the means to produce and distribute their own content is certainly a noble beginning, but as we've seen with blogs and podcasts, quality control could play a far bigger role in any individual broadcaster's staying power. While it's likely that many of the new content will be derided as being weak (or just plain painful to read/watch/listen), that isn't really the point. It comes with the territory. As the tools of production are spread further, the average quality may decrease, but the ability for a few to produce content that was never even possible before far outweighs the mountains of bad content that will be produced.

Digital Video Cameras 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

I need some recommendations for a digital video camera. My requisites are few: It needs to be fairly inexpensive (under $500), use FireWire for transfer and have a track record for working well with Macs.

It need not be a spectacular camera, but one of the best I can get for my price range.

DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.
