TechJapan
completes their three-part DoCoMo FeliCa 'BLOWOUT' coverage of the new
i-Mode FeliCa service that will allow mobile phone users to pay for
small purchases simply by waving their phones over sensors. Of course,
to enable the new service, DoCoMo has to release new phones, and in
part two of the coverage TechJapan covers those, as well. While
there's not a lot of practical information for Western mobile users,
services like BitWallet's "Edy" money system are sure to eventually be
integrated into our communicators. Heck, if I could get a Metrocard
and a debit card plugged into my phone, I could leave my wallet behind
for good.

More And More Credit Card Transactions
Happen Online
08/06/2004 04:41 PMDue to the growing interest in e-commerce, an
increasing
percentage of all credit card transactions now happen online. The
article quotes someone pointing out that this is no surprise (it
isn't... at all), but also saying: "It's convenient, secure and
ideally suits the time-poor society we live in." You might want to
question that middle part, however. Unfortunately, using credit cards
online isn't always as secure as it should be, and with so many online
transactions happening these days, it's about time that credit card
companies start making
disposa
ble credit card numbers the standard online.
Computers Finally Get Small And Stylish
Computers Finally Get Small And Stylish
04/12/2004 02:17 AMI've always wondered why no one (other than Apple, of course) had any
noticeable success with more stylish PCs. For years, all PCs were the
standard beige that we all know and hate. In fact, I was impressed
years ago when computer makes dared to branch out into black PCs -
though, they didn't seem to really catch on. However, it's beginning
to make sense. PCs tend to go on (or more likely under) a desk
somewhere where most visitors aren't going to see them. Thus, for
most people, how stylish a PC is doesn't really matter. However, now
that PC functionality is moving into the living room and homes are
getting networked, it's increasingly likely that a PC will be seen by
others - and thus, it's finally become time for
the PC to get
smaller and more stylish. The next generation of small, stylish
PCs are just entering the market, and it looks like they may finally
get some attention in the market place.

Tax Time: Should You Ignore Taxes On
Online Purchases?
04/09/2004 04:04 PMAh, it's tax time. We first mentioned this
last
month, but some states are getting a bit more explicit in
reminding people that they're supposed to pay taxes on out-of-state
items that they purchased - even if the payment is mostly on the honor
system. They've added an extra line on tax forms where people can
fill in just how much out-of-state purchases they made online. Of
course, what it's really doing is
confusing many
taxpayers who have no idea what to put down on the additional
line. Many are simply recommending that people leave that line blank
- even to the point where one NY newspaper says: "They've got to be
crazy, and you are, too, if you comply." Still, some tax
professionals are warning that if you leave that line blank (claiming
you didn't make any online out-of-state purchases) and you get
audited, it's something they might focus on.
