Jay Rosen: Adopt a Campaign Journalist in 2004: The Drift of a Suggestion:

Over the holidays, an idea gained some Net traction: webloggers "adopting" a campaign reporter. That means you monitor and collect all the reporter's work, and then... And then what? Follow the turns as the suggestion is taken up.

Check out the comments by Dan Gillmor, Jeff Jarvis and many others. Interesting stuff. Dan's postback is Adopting Journalists: Friendly Advice and Fact-Checking, or Antagonistic Truth Squads? His gist:

I like the idea that people are watching what I say and correcting me if I get things wrong -- or challenging my conclusions, based on the same facts (or facts I hadn't know about when I wrote the piece.) This is a piece of tomorrow's journalism, and we in the business should welcome the feedback and assistance that, if we do it right, becomes part of a larger conversation.

But if the idea is to create some kind of organized collection of Truth Squads, I'm less comfortable. Here are just three of the many, many questions/issues that come immediately to mind (and as you'll see, I'm not alone in wondering these things):

I think there's another issue here: one of class, or caste. As members of The Press his last week at Macworld and CES, Dan and I belonged to an exclusive club, with its own private rooms, free food, wi-fi Net connections, and other freebies, not to mention special treatment by vendors. We're insiders.

Yet many markets — politics and technology are just two — include a growing number of outsiders with online journals who are just as important to the market's ecosystem as credentialed journalists. It's only natural, at this early stage in our evolution to what Dan calls Journalism 3.0, for outsiders to play gotcha! with insiders.

Here Come The Spam Detectives

Here Come The Spam Detectives 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
Following the technology trail to track down spammers is increasingly a dead end - especially when so much spam is now coming from zombie machines. However, it appears that plenty of folks with training in traditional detective, private investigation, and law enforcement work are getting into the spam detective game. They're helping both companies and government officials better track down spammers using the tricks of the trade that they used to use to track down escaped prisoners or random other criminals. The article notes that the way to track down spammers is always to follow the money - which also means that many of these spam detectives are actually buying the various products advertised through spam. This, of course, makes you wonder just how many "successful" spam sales are actually being done by those just trying to track down spammers. Still, these spam detectives claim they're getting better all the time, and while their efforts haven't resulted in a decrease in spam (or even a leveling off), they're confident that things are going to change shortly.

Blog-detectives tackle suspected Mexican
child-porn recruitment site
07/24/2004 06:10 PM
Eduardo Arcos, editor of the Spanish-language blog ALT1040, is conducting an online investigation into a website suspected of recruiting teenage girls in Mexico for child porn. He's soliciting help from other bloggers, and using the "comment" feature in his blog as a way to exchange info with concerned citizens throughout the blogosphere. Together they're collecting data, with the apparent goal of revealing who's behind the suspect site -- and seeing to it that appropriate action is taken to protect potential victims. Here's my clunky attempt at translating Arcos' summary post:
A site called TV-whores with a theme and intentions that are very clear, contains the following text: Girls from 13 - 19 years of age: earn thousands of pesos simply by taking photographs. More information here. (...)

The page in question offers thousands of pesos to 13-19-year-old girls for taking digital photos. You don't have to be naked, you can be in a bikini or underwear, it says... but it's more than suspicious."

Scoble Hunt

Scoble Hunt 12/22/2004 01:33 AM

Scoble is getting a lot of heat for his Hi Bill post.  I don't see why they think he is crazy or accuse him of insulting the Windows Media team.  The only part that rubbed me the wrong way was the firing part.  The rest is just a post written by an employee who cares enough about the company he works for to hang his balls out the window.

Who cares if his suggestions don't make sense?  That's his blog.  Should bloggers be restricted to writing posts that make sense to everyone?  Well, up your foobar if you think so.

As to what I think about his post, I think his suggestions are good.  Good, not in the sense of success or brilliance, but in the sense that such change will be good for Microsoft even if the project fails.  Like people, companies don't learn or evolve while doing the same things the same ways.
