07/01/2004 08:41 PMInfoWorld:
Open source Java debate rages. "Whether Sun itself releases an
open source implementation of J2SE, however, is not particularly
important, because the release of Tiger will open the door for open
source implementations of the platform, in much the same way that the
release of J2EE 1.4 let projects like JBoss become certified." A clue
appears! Now will they follow up on it?

06/23/2004 11:53 PMComputerWorld:
JavaOne: Sparks may fly at open-source
debate. I wonder why people who are actually working on
open-source Java are not on the panel; I imagine
Tom
Tromey or Dalibor Topic would be happy to participate. I'm less
concerned about Sun's source code than about putting all Java
implementers on a level footing, so if I were on this panel I'd be
asking questions about JCK, shared code, and trademark licensing. The
press never mentions these issues, possibly because Sun has framed the
debate to be purely about their code.

Wired on Open Source Biology
02/01/2005 08:39 PMAn interesting article from Wired on the folks at
Biological Innovation for Open Society
(BIOS), a group in Australia advocating an open-source approach to
biology. I know the folks at BIOS and recommend you poke around their
site if you're interested in open biology.
Here's
the story; it's a good read.
One point, which is actually pretty major, of contention. We see
Science Commons described as being in a supposed "battle" with the
biotechnology companies of the world.
This is a perception that Science Commons will have to work against -
the idea that, by advocating voluntary changes to inefficient systems,
we are somehow "against" the companies pursuing scientific innovation.
It's just not the case.
I have a feeling I'm going to be making this particular point a lot.
We are not trying to convince people to "abandon" their patents. We
are instead trying to create a network of rights that will support
innovation in the sciences, much like Creative Commons has built a
network of rights that support legal distribution and reuse of
creative works.
What do I mean by this? Well, right now, if I'm working on a rare
disease (diseases that are not profitable to pursue by for-profit
pharmaceutical companies) I might face multiple barriers. First, I
have to hire a lawyer to negotiate multiple licenses with multiple
universities on various genetic research tools. Second, once I use
those tools to discover a set of genes, I have to send my lawyer back
out to negotiate with the owners of patents on the use of those genes.
Given that I'm not likely to make money on a drug (it's a rare
disease after all), why should I spend my research money on a lawyer
instead of science? But that's exactly what is happening...despite
the fact that, in many cases, the holders of those patents would be
happy to let me operate in my area, as long as I didn't infringe on
their areas of reasearch.
This is the kind of problem we're trying to solve at Science Commons.
We want to work with all of the stakeholders, commercial and
non-commercial, to encourage the publication of legally available
scientific knowledge, whether that knowledge is represented in
literature, patents, or data. It's not a "battle" for us. It's an
exploration of how to build just such a Web of knowledge so that
collaborative research and discovery in science can grow to Web scale.

enterprise blogging application, named Roller. While the platform
began
its life as an open source project, before Sun hired its founder David
Johnson, the company has not given the software the full on corporate
treatment since he joined."
I don't believe those "other analysts" actually exist,
this guy is just talking out of his, uh, never mind. I guess I need to
set the record straight. First, Roller is and has always been open
source. The version of Roller we use at Sun is the same one that you
can download from the Roller project site at
Java.Net in either source code
or binary form. Second, I'm not interested in the "full on corporate
treatment" -- I'm a married man.

promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.

04/05/2005 11:50 AM IBM Adopts
Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via
Ross

Nature Open Access Debate
Nature Open Access Debate
04/09/2004 03:54 PMNature is hosting a debate on open
access science publishing. At the center of the debate are Public Library of Science and BioMed Central, two open
access journal publishers using the Creative Commons
Attribution License. The PLoS evidence
paper presents a good summary of what is wrong with the current
scholarly publishing model, why open access is important, and an open
access business model.
Even as the much needed debate on open access journals heats up, it
is just one part of a bigger picture where science, creativity, law,
and society collide. Perhaps with this in mind, note the recent post on this
weblog concerning the launch of the Science
Commons exloratory phase.
