The British Library agreed to sell access to its back catalog of books to Amazon.com . The move should expand users' access to the world of out of print books, by providing a wealth of information. The catalog:

contains 2.55 million books. Crucially it includes 1.7 million produced before the introduction in 1970 of the International Standard Book Number ( ISBN ), a 10-character code that uniquely identifies any modern book.

The British Library has embarked on a series of digital projects, recently, including a large digital archive of its historical materials, Collect Britain , a revamped website , and a national archive of digital materials .

"Microcontent" seems to be one of the buzzwords now. So, what is that, really?

Jakob Nielsen, interface guru, used it (first?) in 1998 about stuff like titles, headlines and subject lines. The idea being that first you might see just a clickable title, or a subject line of an e-mail, that you then might or might not decide to open. So, that title needs to be representative of the full thing, or you might not click it, or you'll be disappointed when you do. Microcontent (the title) needs to match macrocontent (the page, e-mail, article).

Now, that doesn't quite seem to be how "microcontent" is used nowadays. OK, on to 2002, Anil Dash says this, talking about a client for microcontent:

Microcontent is information published in short form, with its length dictated by the constraint of a single main topic and by the physical and technical limitations of the software and devices that we use to view digital content today. We've discovered in the last few years that navigating the web in meme-sized chunks is the natural idiom of the Internet. So it's time to create a tool that's designed for the job of viewing, managing, and publishing microcontent. This tool is the microcontent client. For the purposes of this application, we're not talking about microcontent in the strict Jakob Nielsen definition that's now a few years old, which focused on making documents easy to skim.

Today, microcontent is being used as a more general term indicating content that conveys one primary idea or concept, is accessible through a single definitive URL or permalink, and is appropriately written and formatted for presentation in email clients, web browsers, or on handheld devices as needed. A day's weather forcast, the arrival and departure times for an airplane flight, an abstract from a long publication, or a single instant message can all be examples of microcontent.

Oh, and an absolutely excellent article it is. It calls for the building of a client, a program that will allow us to consume and create microcontent easily. Not just aggregate it, but allow us to use it in meaningful ways. I.e. seeing the information how we want to see it, without having to put up with different sites' different user interface quirks. Good examples he gives at the time is Sherlock or Watson on Macs. You can browse pictures, movies, flight schedules, ebay auctions and more, all from the same interface, and without having to go to the sites they actually come from. But we're still not quite talking open standards for all that.

What is needed is the semantic web, of course. Where all content has a uniform format, and is flagged with pieces of meaning that can be accessed and collected by machines. Isn't there yet. Many smart people are playing with pieces of it, like Jon Udell, or Sam Ruby. Or, look at Syncato. All stuff mostly for hardcore techies at this point. But the target is of course to eventually let regular people easily do what they find meaningful with any data that's available on the net.

When I use the term 'micro-content' I mean a bunch of something that has a unique URL associated with it. An encapsulated piece of content.

Whether it be text, audio, video, forms generated, static or dynamic -and whether or not it's got meta data attached to it or not - or any combination there above - it's micro-content.

Blogging is the first 'type'.

Now media.

Events are next.

David Pescovitz: In the December issue of my favorite print magazine Smithsonian, my old friend/Wired editor Michael Behar has a great article about Robert Graf, a treasure hunter seeking a centuries-old pirate's booty. The multimillion-dollar treasure might be hidden in a stone vault now underwater in the Seychelles. Then again, it might not be.

When I arrive on Mahé, it's easy to spot Graf in the crowd at the airport. He's the only guy wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the classic pirate ensign—a skull and crossbones. Tanned and fit, the treasure hunter seems relaxed—hardly what you'd expect from someone who has spent a third of his life obsessed with a long-dead pirate. Yet Graf is no laid-back islander. He's in-your-face intense right from the start. I'd barely heaved my suitcase into the trunk of his rusty compact car when he launched into a breathless retelling of how he'd voyaged some 10,000 miles from his Colorado home, married a Seychellois hotel reservations manager and spent more than $450,000 of his own money looking for a treasure that others have failed to find here for nearly a century.

Today Mena posted that Anil Dash got re-organized again. He was given his 3rd title that I know of for this year. Now he has the newly created position of VP of the Six Apart Professional Network. Congratulations, I hope. It isn't being advertised, but as an incentive to join the Professional Network, Six Apart is currently giving away 5 author commercial licenses for MT 3.1 to people who sign up for TypeKey, then for the Professional Network, then fill out their survey. Not a bad deal. Six Apart also announced that they released a new version of Movable Type, 3.1 and promptly got slammed for releasing a version with incompatible features. According to Brandon Fuller you can have your old plugins or dynamic pages, but not both, at least not without a lot of tweaking. The only exciting new features for users besides dynamic pages that I saw are delivered by plugins supplied by SixApart that SixApart is explicitly disclaiming any support for, which makes them a lot less appetizing than they might otherwise be. Personally, while delighted to have a licence to 3.1, I'm happy with my combination of pMachine, Wordpress and MT 2.661, and I'm in no hurry to upgrade my MT installations from 2.661, and judging from the other preliminary comments I've seen it doesn't seem like a lot of other people are as well. Ouch. This is sad. When Six Apart has a bad year, it's bad. I really liked Ben and Mena when I met them at Supernova 2002, and they have hired some people I really respect, but I have to say that following Six Apart this last year has been like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I hope that early impressions of this release are wrong and that their luck turns soon....

In a ground-breaking trial, Alaskan prosecutors have accused a driver who accidentally killed a couple in a car accident of watching a DVD on an in-dash player during the accident, something that is not technically illegal in Alaska, but possibly still convictable as manslaughter (I'm presuming). We've all done stupid things like operate electronics while driving, and while I'm not saying this guy shouldn't be prosecuted if proven negligent, there is an interesting precedent set (or maybe not set) here. Watching a movie while driving is irresponsible, but is it that much different than looking at a map on an in-car guidance system LCD screen while driving? Hard to say. How much distraction is too much distraction?
