Several folks submitted a CNN story about EcoBot II, the fly eating robot, which we've reported on in the past. And Sebastian Tyl submitted an Ananova story about KAIST's HUBO robot, a Korea humanoid robot similar to the Japanese ASIMO.

Lost Revenue? Nope ... Just Lost
Opportunities
04/15/2005 06:43 PM
Whenever we hear about established industries whining about how much money they're losing from alternative forms of media consumption, we just shake our heads. If you do too, then brace your neck before reading on. A new study by Accenture says that TV networks will "lose" $27 billion in the coming five years because of ad skipping by DVR users. Not being able to read the full story on AdAge, we can only assume that Accenture thinks advertisers will pull back from the networks to the tune of $5-plus billion per year, simply because DVR watchers can skip ads. Not likely. The connection is highly dubious and the figures are entirely far-fetched. Yet even more troubling is the age-old "lost money" methodology. Each ad skip does not proportionally diminish the network's coffers -- no money is being subtracted from their bottom line. Rather, any "losses" from ad skipping would come from the network's inability to adapt to new trends and attract those dollars elsewise. The networks are losing money to ad-skipping no more than record companies are losing money to downloads. The quicker they see these as lost opportunities, instead of lost dollars, the better for them.

DIY Underwater Camera Housing

DIY Underwater Camera Housing 06/21/2004 01:43 PM

underwater_bag.jpg image

This do-it-yourself waterproof camera enclosure is pretty involved, and isn't the sort of thing you'd want to screw up, even a little, but if you're handy with the heat gun and aren't afraid to get your handheld deburring tool with swiveling cutter a little dirty, you can take pretty much any type of camera you'd like into the drink. Of course, if they make an underwater housing for your camera, it would probably just be easier to buy that, and maybe a little more reliable. Also, just for the record, this will work with your pet turtle Sub Captain Sandy, but only for about three minutes or so.

Can You Patent Purchasing Underwater
Options?

Can You Patent Purchasing Underwater
Options?
01/05/2004 04:56 AM
The latest in bizarre patent applications is a business model patent being applied for by JP Morgan for the concept of buying underwater stock options. How is this patentable? That's unclear, but the folks at JP Morgan think they've hit onto something. They think that many companies trying to help employees get rid of underwater options may sell them to Morgan - following Microsoft's lead (where Microsoft let employees switch over from stock options to restricted stock). Of course, now that the economy is starting to pick up again, companies (and their employees) may be more interested in holding on to their options. Either way, it doesn't explain how making a risky investment is patentable. It's certainly not an original idea. I remember discussing just such a business model with some people in 1998 - when we knew a few people who had left jobs where their options were underwater, and who had no interest in buying them. Of course, we realized that the risk of buying underwater options on a regular basis meant that it could be quite difficult to ever actually make any money - but the folks at JP Morgan are betting the market is turning around and are hoping to buy up now before anyone realizes it.

UNDERWA2a_tech.jpg imageAlthough calling it "underwater SMS" might be a little misleading, the underwater diving computers recently purchased by the Australian Navy from Nautronix sound extremely useful -- and use sound to communicate. The Windows-based PCs use both GPS and sonar to track the position of the divers and underwater object, and can beam messages from one machine to another via acoustically powered network, not unlike a telephone modem. The manufacturer has a wide array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the water.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Nikon D2X & Underwater Housing Reviewed
(Verdict: Awesome)
03/17/2005 03:51 AM

nikon_d2x_housing.jpgWetpixel has a review of both the Nikon D2X 12.4 MP camera and its Subal ND2 underwater housing. The pictures produced by the camera are vibrant and incredibly well-balanced, which you would expect for the $5,000 it costs. Still, reviewer Dr. Alex Mustard says that if you don't need very large output sizes for your shots, you can purchase a Nikon D70 for considerably less that produces rather decent underwater shots. The housing is designed very well and offers excellent ergonomics—an important consideration when on a dive. Dr. Mustard muses "It costs $5,000. And if you fill it up with water, it is worth $0," but goes on to say "in a word, [the D2X] is awesome." Some gorgeous pics accompany the review, so be sure to check them out. (Thanks, Eric!)
