Slate to George Lucas: slap a Creative

Slate to George Lucas: slap a Creative
Commons license on Star Wars
06/05/2005 11:41 PMThe online magazine
Slate
has
a great review
article on the Star Wars fan-created movie
Revelations. Slate's Clive Thompson gives the film high marks
saying the story and special effects are better than the recent Star
Wars prequels and even goes so far as to say:
George Lucas has always encouraged Star WarsÂ-inspired
fan movies, so long as the wannabe auteurs didn't try to make a
profit. (That's the case with Felux—he isn't selling his movie or
any associated merchandise.) Lucas should do more, though. Once he
stops polluting the world with prequels, he should slap a liberal
"Creative Commons" copyright license on the Star Wars franchise. That
would explicitly allow any fan to remix an existing movie, or create a
new one in homage, so long as there's no profit involved. Everyone
wins: Movies like Revelations keep the fan base alive, and Lucas can
continue selling figurines until the sun explodes.
Sounds like an idea we at Creative Commons could get behind. An
attribution-n
oncommercial-sharealike license would allow fan created side
stories, prequels, or follow-ups, and they'd never be sold or charged
for and a credit would always be given to Lucas. It'll be interesting
to see if any aging properties with a large cult-like fan following
adopt something like this. One could speculate that fan art would
drive sales of the original, when outsiders take a liking to these
offshoots, and in the end mean more sales of DVDs and toys for
creators like Lucas.

Brotherton's Star Dragon sf novel under

Cory Doctorow:
JeremyT sez, "Mike Brotherton has released a free downloadable version
of his first science fiction novel, _Star Dragon_ on his website.
Mike's first novel, published by Tor last year, is a great read. Star
Dragon is a hard science fiction novel detailing a scientific
expedition to investigate strange life forms living inside a star's
accretion disk." This is great news -- Tor is my publisher, too and
it's wonderful to see them experimenting with CC licenses for their
other authors.
Unlike most first-time visitors entering the world headquarters of
Biolathe, Inc., Dr. Samuel Fisher didn't pause at the moist cloying
air that moved across the building’s threshold like breath. If
anything, his pace increased; he threw his shoulders forward and his
streaker-clad feet rushed as if to prevent a fall, sinking into the
plush rose ruglings with each step. Unlike the sunlit diamond and
gold, seemingly mandatory in corporate buildings, this lobby throbbed
pink and organic. The entire building was alive. Despite the
omnipresence of biotechnology, walking inside it rather than sitting
on it still made most hesitate.
Not Fisher -- he was in the middle of five major projects. He didn't
believe his life would be as transformed by the upcoming presentation
as the Biolathe agent had hinted. He charged ahead, glancing about
the nearly empty lobby for signs to guide him. What was this? He’d
been here six seconds already! There was never enough time to waste
any of it. He decided there was one thing he would hesitate over in
the future: being talked into a physical meeting.
In the middle of the cavernous chamber Fisher stopped abruptly,
brought up short by a bipedal mobile with wrinkled gray skin attached
to the wall by a pulsing umbilical.

New Star Wars trailer
New Star Wars trailer
03/14/2005 04:23 PMOnce every three years, the first trailer for yet another crappy
George Lucas Star Wars movie is released somewhere to great fanfare.
And each time, I watch said trailer and get all excited. It looks
great, I'll say. Maybe it'll actually be good. My hopes start to rise.
And then the movie comes out, Natalie Portman is transformed by Lucas'
awful direction into the worst actress ever, and I leave the theatre
disappointed that a cherished childhood institution has been handled
in such a piss-poor manner. With the impending release of Episode III
and the trailer during last night's episode of The OC, I have vowed
not to get my hopes up. Never again, George Lucas, will you disappoint
me.
However.
OMFG THE TRAILER FOR THE NEW STAR WARS MOVIE IS SOOO GREAT AND
EXCITING AND THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO KICK SO MUCH ASS!!!
A torrent of the trailer is available here (smaller version here) and in QuickTime.

Star Wars, A New Hope
Star Wars, A New Hope
04/01/2005 05:20 PMI didn't realize how much the recent two Star Wars movies had
sullied my once-fond memories of the first three films until I sat
down to watch the original Star Wars. The acting is marginal at best
and the story is a little clunky in places, but that's really beside
the point, isn't it? The special effects have been digitally retouched
and remastered on the DVD, but even without all that, I can see why SW was
such a huge deal when it appeared in theatres in the late 70s. Space
opera indeed. And the last scene with the X-Wing fighters and the
Death Star -- don't worry, I won't give the ending away if you haven't
seen it -- I've seen that scene about 30 times and it never fails to
entertain; I know every line by heart almost and I was still on the
edge of my seat.

Star Wars weekend
Star Wars weekend
06/22/2005 02:21 AM I convinced Andi that Alex(8) and
Linus(7) are old enough for the Star Wars films. So, this past weekend
we watched episides I, II and III. We started with Episode 1.1: The Phantom Edit, a fan-edited version of
the film that includes much less Jar Jar than before. They boys
thought they could have cut more; I kid you not. I thought the Phantom
Edit was a little too fuzzy to enjoy. I guess that's because it was
created from a VHS copy of the film.
I think the boys enjoyed Episode II: Attack of the Clones more than
Episode I, but there was a little too much kissing. It's funny to see
the kids cringe when Anakin and Padme get all mushy.
It was Andi's birthday on Sunday, so she took Alex and Linus to
Episode III and I stayed home with the little Leo. They enjoyed it the
most of the three, but Linus was a little disturbed when he saw what
happened to Anakin. I don't think he was really traumatized, at least
not as bad as he was on Th
e Mummy (whatever you do, do NOT mention The Mummy to Linus).
I wonder what they're going to think of the original films. Will
they see IV and V as the awesome classics that I know them to be, or
dated and dull after the orgy of special effects they've just gone
through in the prequels.
