NewsGator: Beyond the Aggregator

NewsGator: Beyond the Aggregator

NewsGator: Beyond the Aggregator 07/03/2004 09:23 PM

Why Did We Invest in NewsGator?: Here's a post from a venture capitalist about why he invested in NewsGator.

The misperception is that NewsGator is only an Outlook plug-in. While the most popular product from NewsGator is currently their Outlook-based aggregator, what really turned us on when we dug into NewsGator as a potential investment is NewsGator Online Services (NGOS).

Greg Reinacker's vision is much broader than simply an RSS aggregator - his goal is to provide RSS content on any device. NewsGator currently provides clients for Outlook, the Web, POP email, mobile devices (web-based and wap), and Microsoft Media Center (how cool is it to get an RSS feed on your TV?).

He makes a good point — NewsGator has really extended past Outlook. They started with that, and the Outlook plug-in is what they're most well-known for, but I just wrapped up 30 days with Newsgator Online Services (NOS), and I can tell you that they've deftly transcended the aggregator.

While working with NOS, I got the...feeling, that news and information was just out there, everywhere, and it was up to me how I wanted to receive it. They have options to push information to about any device, on any platform. I've never felt more saturated by news in my life than during those 30 days.

Information was everywhere — so much so that I stopped thinking in terms of this aggreagtor or that protocol. I was just swimming in information, and the method in which I chose to receive it was almost incidental. Petty, even.

"While I'm probably going to stick with Bloglines for a while, I might as well play with the 14 day trial of Newsgator Online Services. The one feature that I don't see (and is now an essential part of my aggregation needs) is the neat e-mail subscriptions that Bloglines offers. I've always wanted to read my e-mail in my aggregator rather than read my RSS feeds in my e-mail client..." [Library Stuff]

After playin g with Bloglines earlier, Steven gave me a heads up about Newsgator's new service. I had mistakenly assumed it ran off Outlook, but he says it's completely independent and is similar to BL. Of course, it's not free, but I'll still try to take it for a spin in the near future.

Latest Version of NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for Microsoft Outlook, Adds Support for Multiple Machines and Synchronization with Other Platforms and Mobile Devices, In Addition to Powerful Developer Tools and Other Capabilities.

LAS VEGAS and Denver, CO -- January 7, 2004 -- NewsGator 2.0, a new version of the popular news aggregator, was announced today by NewsGator Technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. NewsGator retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, newsgroups, and other information sources that support the RSS or Atom syndication formats, and automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft Outlook. RSS (Rich Site Summary) News Syndication is an emerging method of staying abreast with rapidly changing information and allows users to sort, organize, group and search news in multiple ways. Using NewsGator, users can read content offline making information readily accessible any time.

Major New features in NewsGator 2.0:

  • NewsGator Online Services integration -- NewsGator 2.0 includes tight integration for the new NewsGator Online Services platform, which allows users to take advantage of powerful subscription synchronization capabilities. Users can also read related content displayed on the NewsPage, seamlessly access custom search feeds, and easily locate exclusive premium content.
  • Subscription synchronization -- When used with the new NewsGator Online Services platform, NewsGator 2.0 allows users to synchronize their subscriptions between multiple machines, as well as other editions of NewsGator available with NewsGator Online Services.
  • NewsGator Extension API -- NewsGator 2.0 has a powerful new API available for third-party developers, allowing them to build extensions to NewsGator to support numerous new scenarios. With this move, NewsGator extends beyond just an application, becoming a platform allowing developers to build a variety of new applications.
  • Arbitrary RSS extension support -- NewsGator 2.0 is the first mainstream content aggregation tool to support arbitrary extensions in RSS or Atom feeds. Users or publishers can add arbitrary content into their feeds, and NewsGator is now able to process this custom data. Users can modify the rendering of items, add columns in Outlook, or build custom extension processors in .NET. For example, an extension can be written to add an appointment to the Outlook calendar when a meeting is announced in a feed. The possibilities are particularly exciting for businesses looking to integrate workflow applications with RSS and Atom feeds.

There are many other new capabilities and features in NewsGator 2.0, including support for enclosures and attachments in feeds, customizable rendering, and much more. And while NewsGator has always been tightly integrated with Internet Explorer to allow easy subscription to new feeds, NewsGator 2.0 enhances this integration with single-click subscription to feeds from a web site.

NewsGator 2.0 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and will be available on January 19, 2004 from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available.

Aggregator inside aggregator

Aggregator inside aggregator 09/21/2004 10:57 PM
You know whenever people post screenshots of emulators, how it can be weird to see Windows running on a Mac? (Even weirder if you actually use an emulator, until you get used to it.)

Here’s a similar side effect of having embedded a browser in NetNewsWire. (Click for full-size screen shots.)

Bloglines running inside
NetNewsWire's browserRadio UserLand. running inside
NetNewsWire's browser

Even though it’s odd, there’s actually a point to it—we discovered that some people use multiple aggregators. One for fun stuff and one for work, that kind of thing.

If one is browser-based and the other embeds a browser, then, well, hey, you’ve got something like the above.

Press Release - NewsGator Online Services...: I was one of the beta testers for Newsgator 2.0. I can finally vouch that it's a stunning piece of work, since I've been under an NDA for the last two months.

In addition to launching NewsGator 2.0 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, NewsGator Technologies announced its new NewsGator Online Services offerings to users today.

If you have an RSS aggregator at work and home, and you get irritated at having to read everything twice, then this is your tool. It can sync two versions of itself via a central server. Plus, Newsgator Online Services offers Web-based RSS aggregation for when you're on the road.

I use Thunderbird for email, but I still have Outlook open because I can't give up Newsgator.

NewsGator 1.0 Released

NewsGator 1.0 Released 03/13/2003 10:23 AM

Highlands Ranch, CO - February 24, 2003 - Reinacker & Associates, Inc. has released NewsGator 1.0, a news aggregator for Microsoft Outlook. NewsGator retrieves news from multiple sources such as weblogs and news sites that support the RSS syndication format, and integrates the news items into Outlook folders.

News aggregators such as NewsGator are becoming more mainstream as more sites syndicate their content, and are changing the way people view the web. There are thousands of weblogs alone, with content covering nearly every subject area. "NewsGator has had a huge positive impact on my web experience," said Adam Howitt from Biolab, Inc.

Other tools on the market require users to learn to use a new application to read weblogs and news articles; NewsGator leverages the experience many users already have with Microsoft Outlook. "Outlook integration is a killer feature," said George Young, Tulane University. "To be able to view weblog posts in the same application as my e-mail is fantastic." By allowing these users to leverage the powerful organizational features of Outlook in new ways, NewsGator enhances their web experience.

NewsGator is also the natural choice for companies starting to deploy weblogs internally on their intranets. Since Outlook is the de facto standard email application within many companies, it's an easy decision to read the syndicated weblog feeds inside of Outlook as well.

NewsGator also includes the "NewsPage", which is a single page summarizing all of the unread posts in your news folders. It provides a quick, at-a-glance view of your latest news with a single click.

NewsGator 1.0 is available immediately. Pricing is $29 (US) per copy with quantity discounts available.

NewsGator and Security

NewsGator and Security 03/13/2003 10:23 AM
There have been a couple of posts (here and here) talking about alleged security vulnerabilities in NewsGator and other news aggregators. The first post supposedly describes a way to have a news post contain an Outlook "virus" that will send an email to people in your address book; the second shows a RSS file containing script which could be annoying or malicious to a user.

As part of our commitment to our customers, we are addressing these concerns here immediately before they get blown out of proportion.

First, regarding the "virus" which could send messages to people in your address list. The technique described in the post, with code similar to that demonstrated, will not actually work on default installations of NewsGator with Outlook 2000 or 2002. In order to make the code work, the user must have edited the applicable security zone settings to allow scripting of ActiveX controls not marked as safe. If this setting was indeed changed, the vulnerability would exist not just in NewsGator/Outlook, but for browsing in Internet Explorer as well.

Second, regarding the demonstrated ways to execute javascript code placed within a news post. The javascript in question will not execute at all when running NewsGator on Outlook 2002 with the default settings. When running NewsGator on Outlook 2000, the javascript may indeed execute, just as it would for HTML e-mail messages. It is easy to correct this if you wish; you simply need to change the IE security zone used for HTML messages in Outlook 2000 to be the "Restricted" zone. For help with this, refer to this article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. By default, Outlook 2002 displays all HTML messages in the Restricted zone, so it is not vulnerable to this problem.

To summarize, NewsGator running on Outlook 2002 is not vulnerable to any of the problems mentioned. With Outlook 2000, it is easy to change settings to eliminate any possible problems as well.

NewsGator is NOT "Gator"

NewsGator is NOT "Gator" 06/17/2005 07:17 PM

Shortly after I announced that NewsG ator had acquired my company, I started seeing comments from people wondering whether NewsGator was related to the "Gator" spyware company (now known as "Claria"). The answer, of course, is NO (you don't really think I'd join a spyware company, do you?).

NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker wrote about this problem a few months ago, and wondered whether a name change was in order to prevent the unintended association. But renaming a company isn't the simplest thing to do, and even if the rename took place, people would still refer to us as "the former NewsGator company," defeating the purpose.

Funny thing is, I had a simil ar post in my own blog last month, related to some people taking offense to the "demon" part of FeedDemon's name. Given the problems with both names, I think it's safe to say that if we ever rename the company, we won't choose the name "GatorDemon" :)

Yahoo Aggregator

Yahoo Aggregator 01/07/2004 06:17 PM

Yahoo is beta testing an RSS Aggregator that integrates into the My Yahoo service, but their advertising of it has fallen flat. Because I choose the contents of a My Yahoo page, I have a sense of ownership of the page. Personalized pages tend to evoke that feeling. So imagine my surprise when I open My Yahoo today and find that there’s a new content module for RSS added to the top of the page. I wasn’t sure whether to feel excited or violated. It’s great that Yahoo is embracing RSS, but they messed with my page.

Nevertheless I tried testing it, but when trying to add feeds or search for feeds, I received a message saying that I didn’t have access. Curious to see if I’d get the same message if I tried removing the module, I hit the remove button. Now it’s gone and there doesn’t seem to be a way to add it back.

It might seem strange that I’m complaining that I can’t get something back when I didn’t want it in the first place, but it goes back to that sense of ownership. I know that content module exists, but I can’t add it to my page.

After a false start earlier this month, My Yahoo now has an RSS aggregator.

When the module appeared on my Yahoo and I complained about it, I was informed by Yahoo employees that it was a bug that caused the pre-beta module to show up on some My Yahoo pages. It wasn’t an intentional marketing effort, but the buzz created by the snafu didn’t hurt Yahoo’s cause.

The module isn’t yet available on the standard list of My Yahoo modules. To add it you’ll need to go to add.my.yahoo.com/rss.

NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!

NewsGator Acquires FeedDemon,
TopStyle...and Me!
06/05/2005 11:08 PM

Yes, it's true: NewsGator has acquired FeedDemon and TopStyle, and brought me on board in the process.

Wow! How did this happen?

As regular visitors to my support forums know, the biggest request - by far - that FeedDemon customers have had is the ability to synchronize their subscriptions between multiple computers. They use FeedDemon on one PC at home, on another at the office, on a laptop while traveling, etc., and they want their feeds to be synched between them.

If someone reads an item on one computer, it shouldn't show up as unread on another computer. And when they subscribe to a feed, it should automatically appear on any computer they use. Basically, provide the convenience of a web-based aggregator with the power and speed of a Windows desktop application.

I toyed with various hack-ish ways to do this, and even considered creating my own web-based sync service, but in the end came to the conclusion that to really do this right, I needed to join forces with someone who already had the server-side piece in place.

Why NewsGator? I thought they were just an Outlook plug-in?

I used to think that, too. But shortly after I decided I needed to join forces with someone, I read this post in NewsGator founder Greg Reinacker's blog, in which he laid out NewsGator's plans. This post really opened my eyes to where they were headed - let's just say, I was impressed.

Funny enough, soon afterwards I got an email from Greg asking whether I'd consider joining forces with NewsGator. Truth is, if I hadn't already read Greg's blog post and been so impressed with the direction NewsGator was headed, chances are I would've turned him down - but because I read that post, I flew out to meet with the folks at NewsGator (score one for transparency through blogging!).

Long story short: we agreed that I should come on board and bring FeedDemon and TopStyle with me.

So what does this mean for FeedDemon customers?

I think you're going to like this :)

NewsGator uses a subscription model, and FeedDemon will become part of their subscription plans. All existing FeedDemon customers will get a two-year business standard subscription for free - and this includes upgrades to FeedDemon. In other words, if you've already bought FeedDemon, you'll get brand new versions of FeedDemon and a subscription to NewsGator Online free for the next two years.

Are there going to be changes in FeedDemon as a result of this?

Certainly. The most obvious will be that FeedDemon will integrate very closely with NewsGator's online synchronization platform, enabling using FeedDemon on multiple computers while maintaining state between all of them. You could even use FeedDemon on your home computer, NewsGator Outlook Edition while at work, and NewsGator Mobile Edition while traveling, and still have everything synched between devices.

Beyond that, having a server-side piece offers a lot of interesting possibilities. Coupling a rich desktop client with a first-rate server-side aggregator provides the best of both worlds: you get the power of a Windows application and all the flexibility of a web-based approach. There have been a number of features I've been wanting to add to FeedDemon that required a server-side piece which I can now provide.

While these changes won't happen overnight, we've already been working hard on a new release of FeedDemon - version 1.51 - which will include much better integration than cur rently exists. You should expect to see the first beta of FeedDemon 1.51 a couple of weeks from now.

And what about TopStyle customers?

While the acquisition obviously came to pass because of FeedDemon, NewsGator has made it clear that they're committed to TopStyle as well. This was an important part of the deal for me. I use TopStyle every single day, and I personally couldn't work without it. I'm already developing TopStyle 3.12, a free upgrade for existing TopStyle customers which will be released as a NewsGator product.

Oh, and you'll get the same deal as FeedDemon customers: a free two-year subscription. For the record, TopStyle has a lot of users - even more than FeedDemon - so this is a very generous offer from the folks at NewsGator, and it illustrates their commitment to the product.

So, what about you, Nick? Are you moving? And will you still be doing support?

Although I'll be working for NewsGator (my official title is "Architect of Client Products"), I'll be staying here in Tennessee, with frequent trips to NewsGator's offices in Denver.

I'll continue to be active in the support forums - I need to, in order to understand what my customers need - but I'll be handing over the support reigns to the folks at NewsGator. In fact, NewsGator has already taken over some of the support for FeedDemon - they're the "reinforcements" I mentioned in this post last month. The mysterious "Ron" I talked about is actually NewsGator's Ronnie Gilbertson, who will no doubt be relieved that he's no longer a secret!

And to illustrate their commitment to FeedDemon and TopStyle, NewsGator has already hired Jack Brewster to help support both products. Jack starts next month, and he's been a very frequent contributor to my support forums over the years (sometimes I think he knows TopStyle and FeedDemon better than I do). Welcome aboard, Jack - glad you could join us!

Patience is a virtue :)

So, there are obviously some major changes underway here, and we've got a lot to do to integrate my site, support system, etc., with NewsGator's.

As long as this post is, I know it leaves a ton of questions unanswered, and I'll try to address them here over the next few weeks. In the meantime, I do ask for your patience while we get everything sorted out. The entire process will likely take several weeks, and it's possible there will be a few hiccups along the way.

The end result, though, will be something special. I'm excited to have this opportunity to take my software to a whole new level, and I look forward to entering this new chapter in my life.

Handling Arbitrary RSS Data with

RSS extensions: The inventor of NewsGator shows us some of the really cool things you can do with it.

...you can define whatever extension you like, and NewsGator will be able to use it in one way of another. Let's explore how this works, and what you can do...you can take any extension data and map it to a column in Outlook...NewsGator 2.0's rendering engine now uses XSLT, and you can customize the transforms used to render the items. What's more, any custom data is available to these transforms...so you could have a custom rendering based on this data by building a new stylesheet.

This could be huge for corporate applications — RSS could be a generalized reporting stream on anything, including any statistics necessary. Using Outlook VBA, you can even trigger client-side programs when posts are received, so there's really no limit on where you could go with this.

In support of Greg Dyke and the BBC... 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

In the Daily Telegraph today is an advert/petition paid for and signed by many thousands of BBC staff asserting the fierce independence of the BBC and talking about Greg Dyke's leadership as Director General (see Guardian article). I don't have a lot to say about it except to say that unfortunately my name and those of many other people I know couldn't fit onto the page, but that shouldn't in any way be read as a lack of support. It was signed and supported financially by many more people than could fit onto that page - myself included - and its impressive scale should be viewed as just a slice of the even larger genuine ground-swell of sentiment throughout the organisation.

Robot Stories - Greg Pak Interview

Robot Stories - Greg Pak Interview 06/04/2004 08:34 PM
Robot Stories is a low budget movie billed as "science fiction from the heart". The collection of four Bradbury-style short stories is making the rounds of art house theaters around the country. Robot Stories has proven so popular in Dallas, Texas, where it's showing right now that the run has been extended another week. I got a chance to talk to Greg Pak, the writer and director, after a recent screening and he agreed to answer a few questions for the robot geeks here at robots.net. Read on for the full interview.

Interview with AirWave's Greg Murphy

Interview with AirWave's Greg Murphy 07/12/2004 03:54 PM
A talk with AirWave's COO: In a bit of coincidental timing, AirWave's $7 million funding announcement today dovetails with a recent interview I had with Greg Murphy, the founder of AirWave's two incarnations and currently the chief operations officer. Those with reasonably long memories will recall that AirWave started as a hotspot company and was setting up restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2001. Faced with the dotcom downturn, the company sold its Wi-Fi locations to a startup operator -- in turn acquired by Ikano and operated now as Hotspotzz -- but turned its expertise in managing remote access points into its main business. AirWave is on the verge of releasing its third version of the AirWave Management Platform, which allows management through a central software server of dozens to thousands of heterogeneous access points (APs) from vendors like Cisco, 3Com, Avaya, Proxim, and others. AirWave's basic philosophy is that companies can be free to choose whatever access points they need, but also that most companies already have APs from multiple vendors that they aren't interested in replacing. With a central console, the network can be monitored for new APs, which can be automatically configured; traffic statistics can be collected in one location for an entire worldwide network; reconfiguring 10 or 1,000 routers involves the same amount of work; and rogue access points can be detected when they're plugged into a network. Similar hardware and software is avaiable from Cisco, Proxim, and others to manage just their own equipment with some support for outside integration with other APs. I spoke to Murphy last month just after AirWave had announced that their system was being used in 10 major universities around the U.S. Murphy noted his alma mater, Amherst, had put in Ethernet everywhere as part of an early wave of making Internet access available to all students. The current wave is, of course, Wi-Fi. "It's so much more affordable than punching a hole in every dorm," Murphy said. Every time a college opens a wall, they might find construction problems, code issues, or even asbestos. "If I don't open the wall, I don't have to know what's in there," Murphy said. The AirWave system works well in colleges because they're among the most likely candidates to have patchworks of equipment from many companies, including commodity consumer gear, and then overlay a more comprehensive management approach on top of...

Composer Greg Hale Jones passes away

Composer Greg Hale Jones passes away 08/10/2004 08:59 AM
I've just learned that Los Angeles-based composer Greg Hale Jones has passed away. This is very sad news -- he was young, he was talented, and he was a kind soul.

I first met Greg in the course of a feature I was writing for Grammy Magazine (Link to gif scan), and had the good fortune of developing an aquaintance with his work and his warm, kind personality over time. He was a good man, which is something of a rarity here in Hollywood.

His body of work included a number of film soundtracks, and a series of wonderful pieces that remixed/rethought/reinterpreted old historic folk song recordings from the Library of Congress. Probably the most widely-exposed of these was a tune called "Boll Weevil."

One of the things that was so amazing about the work Greg did was the way he used these old recordings -- he wasn't just sampling them and slapping them on top of a techno beat, Moby-style. He was really turning them inside out, composing through them and around them and retooling both the original and the new elements in an incredibly sensitive way. It was great work, and a fine reminder of the fact that valuable new art often owes its creative DNA to prior work.

When I interviewed him, he told me about how the Library of Congress was relatively generous with granting permission to use those 60-year-old Alan Lomax field recordings of black southern folk singers -- but this permission came with an odd condition. Since the song would be used in a feature film, some portion of the movie's proceeds must go back to the heirs of the original singer. Greg agreed. This resulted in a surreal scenario: after a long, challenging search to locate the descendants, a suited-up Paramount Pictures executive drives a winding road out to an overgrown southern plantation in disrepair, hands a check to an elderly woman, asks "So, what are you going to do with the money?" She replies, "I'm gonna finally go out and buy me one of them telephones, that's what I'm gonna do."

Some audio clip are here. His partner Laurie says she plans to keep Greg's studio in operation, and has no intent of allowing his creative legacy to fade. He was a gentle, insightful soul. He was also an unbelievably gifted artist. I'm deeply saddened to learn of his departure.
