Is this big news? Sure, but anyone that reads Scoble knows Microsoft is
working towards integrating RSS into Longhorn itself.
However, I agree 100% with Steven that the best RSS
aggregator is one that is web-based, not a desktop client. As more and
more people shift their information on the go, the last thing they'll
need is to begin relying heavily on an aggregator that they'll
lose when their desktop crashes. 'Cause we've all had that happen,
haven't we?

Cybersquatter takes Apple to High Court
Cybersquatter takes Apple to High Court
03/29/2005 01:47 PMBenjamin Cohen, former owner of the iTunes.co.uk domain name, will be
taking Apple to the High Court to try and overturn a ruling from a
domain registry that stated the domain name should be transferred to
Apple.
Apple issued proceedings against Cohen in December through the UK
internet registry Nominet, claiming ownership of the domain should be
transferred to Apple because it holds the iTunes trademark. The
company won a legal battle against Cohen earlier in March as Nominet
claimed that he had made an "abusive registration" and ruled that the
domain name should be transferred to Apple.
Cohen will be applying to the High Court on Tuesday or Wednesday for a
judicial review.
"We feel that the procedure that Nominet utilise to settle disputes is
unfair and biased towards big business at the expense of legitimate
small British companies," Cohen told The Guardian. "It's a matter of
principle now. I paid for it and if Apple had contacted me nicely
without lawyers we would have sold it to them."
Apple takes Playfair bullying to India
Apple takes Playfair bullying to India
04/16/2004 11:50 AMPlayfair is the program that removes the use-restriction wrapper from
your iTunes Music Store tracks. It used to be hosted on SourceForge,
but they chickened out when Apple sent them a bullying note demanding
takedown under the ludicrous and loathesome DMCA. Playfair moved to a
host in India, which apparently has no such law, but now Apple has
nastygrammed the Indian hosts too, resulting in another takedown while
the Indians get some legal advice. Gee, Apple, you really can't buy
publicity like this. Well, you can. But why would you want to?

08/09/2004 10:00 AMMicrosoft has finally finished the long-awaited upgrade for Windows
XP, which should be available to PC users in August. The second major
update since XP was released in October 2001 focuses on fixing the
security holes that have plagued it in recent months. Microsoft has
followed Apple's lead in turning all the security features on by
default, rather then leaving the OS wide-open to attacks. As well as
making virus-writers' and hackers' work that much more difficult, the
update could also spell the end for the pop-up ad. Internet Explorer 6
will be set to block pop-ups by default, trailing all the other major
browsers that have long had built-in pop-up blocking.

Not so much of a
review as an attempt to pick up his jaw off the floor, this article at
TrustedReviews details the ViewSonic VP2290b, an $8,500 monitor (with
a $2,000 video card) with an amazing 3,840 x 2,400 resolution spread
out across its 22.2-inches. To give you some idea of what that means,
an image from a 9.2-megapixel camera could be displayed
pixel-for-pixel on the monitor without any scaling down. Powered by a
single Parhelia HR256 with dual-DVI outs, the VP2290b is has top-notch
image quality, but a relatively low refresh rate, meaning that even if
you steal one from your college's research laboratories, you probably
won't want to play videogames on one -- not that you could find a 3D
card that could power it.

New UK Competitive Directory Services
Give You Wrong Number 40% Of The Time
11/17/2003 03:08 PMDirectory assistance services are pretty straightforward. Someone
asks for the phone number of a person or business they're trying to
reach, and the service gives them the phone number. There certainly
is a lot of data to manage, and working through similar names is
definitely an issue - but you'd still think, on the whole, that if you
call a directory service system you're more likely than not to get the
right number. It turns out in the UK, where they've just deregulated
their directory service system it's true that you'll get the right
number more often than not - but just barely. In a large test of the
various directory services providers,
38% of callers
were not given the right number. Ouch. And 20% of those not
served properly couldn't get a refund. Of course, in a competitive
situation, you would think that the services that can't get the job
done would get weeded out pretty quickly by word of mouth.

12/23/2003 04:31 PMIn addition to cutting out scenes of gay events held at National
Parks, the US Park service is also selling books that "prove" the
Grand Canyon is only a few thousand years old.
This fall, the Park Service also approved a creationist text, 'Grand
Canyon: A Different View' for sale in park bookstores and museums. The
book by Tom Vail, claims that the Grand Canyon is really only a few
thousand years old, developing on a biblical rather than an
evolutionary time scale. At the same time, Park Service leadership has
blocked publication of guidance for park rangers and other
interpretative staff that labeled creationism as lacking any
scientific basis."
Here's a quote from the book: "... in the creationist's view, the
carving of the Canyon would have taken place when the sedimentary
layers were still soft, allowing the catastrophic erosion process to
quickly and easily cut through the layers."
From
Amazon.com: "Author Tom Vail and his wife
are the founders of Canyon Ministries, which offers Christ-centered
voyages through the canyon."
