Flip-switch day

Flip-switch day 11/16/2003 08:29 PM

Lots of changes today, but ones with (Murphy-willing) very small impact on the user interface. In fact, unless they don't work, you shouldn't see any difference at all. Since this is Scripting News, and not Knitting News, we'll go ahead and say which switches got flipped.

First, www.scripting.com now resides on the east coast instead of the west. The new Monster servers, the 3GHz meat-eaters that climb skyscrapers, are now both managing the content and doing the serving for everything on scripting.com.

A
picture named kong.gifThe picture of King Kong to the right will appear when the new server is visible through DNS to your browser. If you see a broken image and want to see what the picture looks like just click on it.

Second, a big change in the way the outliner works. We used to have to tell it how to format a day of weblog posts using Rules, a great feature if you want a lot of control over how things look, but a pain in the butt if every day looks exactly like every other day, as is always true in my weblog.

Third, this is going to be a product, not one that I plan to sell (although I may give it to UserLand and they might sell it). It's a new kind of outliner-based Web CMS, that does weblogs and all the other stuff you see popping up here on Scripting. I spent much of the day exploring ideas for how to package, test and then ship this. Should it be a Manila plug-in? Or something that's linked to Manila on a sort of peer basis? Or should it be completely independent of Manila? I want to deliberate on this decision, because I expect to live with it for a long time.

Since we got new servers we actually ran out of switch ports. We have an 8-port gigabit Dell switch BizRate gave us last year that we use for our internal network. We have another ancient 22 port old Cisco 29xx 100Mbit switch we use for our external network and (with a VLAN) for some of the internal network). They are both so full we had to unplug things we weren't using enough to get the new servers in yesterday. I'd...

Work?

Yes, But When Can I Switch Off From
Work?
04/14/2004 10:37 PM
Welcome to the modern "always on, always connected" work world. It's gotten to the point where Microsoft discovered, after handing out smart phones, tablet PCs and broadband connections to employees that they needed to give their employees special instructions on how to turn off work. This isn't a new problem, and it's certainly been discussed before. While some people can handle the work/life balance without a problem - it's not so easy for everyone else. Even for those who can switch off, it's made more difficult by their colleagues who can't - and who contact them at odd hours with work requests. This is going to become a bigger issue for modern companies to deal with. There are, obviously, some advantages, but people need to learn their limits.

One Less Reason Not To Switch

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

The Manglefreuzer Switch

The Manglefreuzer Switch 08/11/2004 11:40 AM

For everyone who has ever struggled with interm ittent problems, the truth has finally l eaked out.

...there's always the chance the mangelfreuzer switch will trip - which would be a problem."

"What's a manglef.. r."

"Manglefreuzer - as in Mangle-Froy-TSir. It's a switch or other device that hardware manufacturers put into their equipment to detect unuathorised access to a box - and makes the system act strangely."

"Strangely?"

"Yes, you know, the odd memory error, harddisk write error, machine crashes, etc. To encourage you not to tamper with the box. And generate revenue for the maintenance provider of course."

"Are you serious?!"

"Of course. Some of our major outages have been those exact same problems."

"You mean they're all caused by a manglefreuzer?"

"Some of them, yes. Obviously no sane vendor would build in something which could be conclusively linked as the source of a problem, so they make the outages sporadic and hard to track down..."

"And people know about this?"

"Technical people, yes."

"And you're ok with that?"

"We don't really have that much choice in the matter, do we? Anyway all the vendors do it - and not just in computers."

And all this time I've been blaming the problems on interference from low-flying cloaked alien spacecraft. Those PC-building dirtballs!

Vivato's 802.11g Switch Has FCC Approval

Vivato's 802.11g Switch Has FCC Approval 04/16/2004 06:33 PM
Vivato's filings for its VP2200 802.11g switch were approved by the FCC today: Filings show the antenna has a maximum 48.1 dBi EIRP which is a measure of its effective signal strength. The VP2200's manual says that it supports receiving Power over Ethernet. The Ethernet ports are just 10/100 Mbps, not gigabit Ethernet, which is slightly surprising. It appears to have six separately configurable wireless interfaces, each of which can be set to a unique channel or which can be set in multiples to the same channel. The VP2200's manual also shows the full command-line interface, including configuring multiple VLANs, but makes no mention of WPA at all, only WEP and 802.1X/EAP. You can review Vivato's exhibits here, including the tentative user manual and photos of the unit's internal and external parts....
