Fireworks for free
08/07/2004 10:55 PM

Last night I went to see fireworks. There were approximately 22,000
fireworks ignited and an expected turnout of about 320,000 people. You
could pay 30,000 yen (around 300 dollars) and get a special seat as a
sponsor. Otherwise, you could, like the 320,000 or so other people,
find a nice spot and watch the fireworks for free. In fact, there were
two other fireworks festivals (Japanese love fireworks) going on
within view of the nice spot in the park that we had chosen.
Fireworks shows in Japan are sponsored by companies and local
governments. The sponsors usually get the best seats and they are
thanked over the PA system for the people watching the show up close.
For 99% of the people who watch the fireworks from far away, the
sponsors are invisible. These people are, to use Hollywood's favorite
word, "stealing" this content. They don't view ads, they don't pay.
They do consume a lot of beer, buy stuff in local shops which pay
taxes and generally feel good about the "public good" they've just
been a part of. Like me, they take pictures and videos of the
fireworks and post them to the web and send them to their friends.
I wonder if there is some sort of equivalent business model for
other content businesses. Charge a small number of people a large
amount of money and give it to 99% of the people for free. Get
sponsored by companies and other organizations like local governments
that benefit from the secondary consumption increase and follow-on
derivative works creation and sharing.

as to how much Macromedia would improve the new version with added
features and enhancements.

blowing Osama bin Laden's head off. The bin Laden Noggin, a
cone-shaped pyrotechnic device with a cartoon of bin Laden's face, has
been a hot seller at some fireworks stores around the country. When
lit, the bin Laden cone erupts in blood-red flames and screeches for
60 seconds. Two shots blow his head off.

Disney Open-Sources Fireworks

07/04/2004 12:21 PMDisney Debuts New
Safer, Quieter and More Environmentally Friendly Fireworks
Technology: Disney has sort of open-sourced a new way to launch
fireworks. The new method uses compressed air instead of black
powder. (The quote below is from a press release, so it's a little
self-serving.)
As a recognized industry leader and the world's largest
producer of fireworks shows, Disney is in the process of donating all
seven patents associated with the new air launch technology to a
non-profit organization so these patents can be licensed to other
pyrotechnic providers.
The bit on CNN said that Disney hopes other companies will use the
technology and improve it. sounds a lot like open source, though I
don't know if the improvements to the technology need to be donated
back to the organization or not.

Python Revisited
01/01/2004 02:44 PMHappy New Year! Let's talk shop as usual.
Recently, we've been looking at developing some server software in
Python. This is my first serious look at Python since 1999, and I'm
impressed with the improvements. It's a couple of years older than
PHP, and certainly more mature. Python has a reputation for being
more rationally designed than PHP or Perl, and in general that's true;
but you can still see Python's age in the fact that there are many
APIs that do the same thing (eg. the string functions).
PHP is still a better language for web development because it is a
simpler language, easy to teach to Java or Javascript programmers, has
more flexible string processing, and designed to work well with
templates.
But as a general programming language, Python has its advantages. You
can build sophisticated networking software with Python that supports
threads and asynchronous connections with reasonable efficiency
(though Python doesn't really take advantage of multiple CPU's due to
an internal global lock). The Twisted and Dibbler frameworks are testament to that. Python's
C API is well documented and Python can be easily embedded into 3rd
party apps.
Python is also a good source of design ideas. I have noticed that othe
rs have realized that many good Java ideas do not translate well
to PHP. There is an impedence mismatch; many things that are hard in
Java are easy in PHP. It makes sense to create an elaborate framework
in Java to do something that's hard in Java, but to apply the same to
PHP suggests more energy than sense. In contrast, I suspect that
Python and PHP are more complementary than we all suspect...
PS: We also had a look at developing the same server software using
.NET. However .NET doesn't have builtin support for open protocols
such as POP3 and IMAP. I continue to be amused at the (intentional?)
omissions in the .NET framework.

Strings, revisited
Strings, revisited
06/16/2004 10:49 PMSo, I finally did the last draft of the bytecode/assembly level string
design for Parrot. It was a mixed bag--the per-string language tag is
gone (darn!) but national character sets stay (yay!) with a set of
"It's all Unicode no matter what you say" string ops thrown into the
mix. Like any other engineering task with multiple conflicting
requirements and strong proponents of different schemes, it's safe to
say that everyone's unhappy with the result, but I think everyone can
make do with what we have. What ultimately resulted, if you don't feel
like going and looking up the post...
