DidTheyReadIt and Civil Behavior
05/23/2004 10:32 PMA company launching a new
application claims it can tell senders of e-mail whether the
recipient has opened it, and for how long (and even, in many cases,
the location of the reader). "Creepy" doesn't begin to do justice to
this concept.
Imagine if someone sent you a piece of junk mail using the Postal
Service, and included a tracking device that radioed out whether you'd
opened it or tossed it out. This is roughly the same idea, and it
stinks.
So I will now look for a tool that discovers if someone has sent me
such a message. No doubt there are people working on it already.
And if or when I discover anyone sending me mail this way, I make the
following promise: I will filter that person's mail straight to the
trash. Perrmanently.

Les 3
3, rue Saint Croix de la Bretonnerie (Marais)
Paris, 75004
Another amazing dinner at Les 3 around the corner from our
house. This place was recommended by Gil, who's a chef and whose
apartment we're renting. He was not wrong about this place. More
au current than Le Colimaçon and similar to something
one would find in San Francisco, the food was spectacular. I started
with a cream of chestnut soup, accompanied by a slice of fois gras on
toast (YUM!) and then had rouget in a sauce of some sort and a side of
potatoes gratinee. Wow. So good....chestnuts are my new favorite
thing. I'm going to buy a little bag of roasted ones to try out soon
from the guys that sell them on the corner. Was going to today in the
cold rain but forgot. Will report on how they taste soon. Expect most
reports from France to be about food and nothing else. Musee d'Orsay
was good, but you would have expected that.
Ginette de la Côte d'Azur
101, rue Caulaincourt (Montmartre)
75018, Paris
Very nice lunch in a stylish café in Montmartre. While the
entrees (English entrees) were fairly expensive, and much more than we
wanted to spend for lunch, the salads and omelettes were priced more
reasonably and were delicious. I had an omelette
provençcal which was filled with wonderful cooked veggies
like red peppers, eggplant, and zucchini. It was served with some nice
red leaf lettuce dressed lightly in a simple vinaigrette. A glass of
red wine bouch du Rhône accompanied. 21.30 euros for
two.

01/07/2004 05:32 PMI got a ping last night from some folks at
U-blog, one of the leading French
weblog companies, asking for a friendlier interface for all the
blogging frogs out there. Best of all, they sent over all the
internationalized HTML I needed to convert the pages for them. So,
now you can see the
French homepage with
top 100 french language weblogs - seems like the French aren't using
the
high-priority
indexer much yet, so only a few major weblog services are
currently represented. I'm sure that that will change over time.
Note to weblog developers: There's an
XML-RPC
interface and
instru
ctions on how to use it available as well.
To say thanks to the u-blog folks, I put up a special

easiest way to my heart. Thanks
Loic, for pulling it all
together.

France to Get Nationwide WiMax
France to Get Nationwide WiMax
09/23/2004 03:18 PMAltitude Telecom, the only owner of a nationwide 3.5 Ghz license in
France, plans to use Alvarion gear to build a broadband wireless
network in the country: The Alvarion gear is based on WiMax, though
not yet certified as WiMax because the certification process hasn't
started yet. Altitude will start out with four counties and move on
from there. It's interesting to note that Altitude plans to use the
wireless network to serve small to large businesses. That target
market is the same market that broadband wireless operators have
traditionally targeted. WiMax, however, has often been touted as a DSL
replacement that could be used to serve the residential market.
Perhaps Altitude will use the next generation of WiMax gear to target
the residential market....

Quebec is more French than France
Quebec is more French than France
07/23/2004 06:14 PMQuebec City, despite its proximity to the U.S. and confederation
with Anglophone Canada, is in many ways more authentically French than
France. Our global village of cheap jet transport and liberal
immigration policies has resulted in many of the world's cities
drawing their inhabitants from whatever countries are most populous
and/or whichever countries have the most poverty, crime, and
government oppression. This results in enough similarity of
one big city to another that some folks don't bother traveling
anymore.
Quebec, by contrast, has stubbornly resisted immigration
for centuries. After the British took over in 1760 they tried
desperately to get English speakers to move here to dilute the French
language, culture, and loyalty. In the 19th-century the
Quebecois themselves began leaving for various New England states in
which high-paying mill jobs were to be had. Instead of the
hoped-for immigration this was an outflow of roughly 1 million
people. Today Canada brings in nearly 250,000 immigrants per
year but most of them want to go to Toronto, Vancouver, and other
English-speaking cities. Quebec, with 24 percent of Canada's
population, is the choice of only 15 percent of immigrants and most go
to Montreal where it is possible to get by with only English (Montreal
was where Ah
med Ressam started his life in the New World). Some
combination of cold weather, a persistently moribund economy (they've
tried everything here: big government, small government,
agriculture, heavy industry, high tech, etc.), and the terror of
having to learn French keeps folks from wanting to pile into Quebec
City and, to an even larger extent, the small Francophone towns of
Quebec.
All of the folks who work basic service jobs seem to be native-born
Quebecois. Any signs in English are directed at
tourists.McDonald's has a section "reserved for smokers". Can
this island of pure French culture survive? A
schoolteacher told me "I know that the day will come when I can't
speak French here anymore." At the inception of the language wars
in the 18th-century the French language was holding its own quite
nicely in the worlds of literature, science, and day-to-day use.
Today, however, the results of England imperialism have spread the
English language far beyond what could have been foreseen 250 years
ago. The huge number of countries and people that use Spanish
and Chinese have further reduced the French language to obscurity.
