Moving on to part II and the bl0g apps
02/05/2005 10:07 PM Some status on Blogs, Wikis, and Feeds in Action: I
submitted Chapter 8: Publishing with Atom
last week, bringing me to the end of part I of the book. Now I'm
moving
on to Part II, a collection of blog
apps, example applications that are
designed to be interesting an immediately useful. One of the first
blog
apps is a simple community aggregator, like a simple more limited
version of Planet. That is
quite convenient, because I'm also supposed
to be working on a more full featured aggregator for the blogs.sun.com
front page.

Microsoft Proves Pronouns Patentable

06/16/2004 11:35 AMtheodp writes
"Five days after arguing that the Eolas browser plug-in patent
should be invalida
ted as obvious, Microsoft pocketed a patent of its own for Computer programming language pronouns, which covers the use of
ellipses, blanks, and ditto marks as substitutes for names in a
computer programming language. Perhaps the USPTO was won over by the
patent's eloquent conclusion: 'Eliminating names is a substantial
benefit as programmers dislike creating names.' " Sometimes, you
have to wonder if folks are just sitting around trying to come up with
absolutely ridiculous ideas on what to patent - just to see if they
can get away with it.

games
06/23/2004 07:47 AMAbout a year and a half ago the tiny independent game developer
eGenesis decided to create a Linux port of its massively multiplayer
online game, A Tale In The Desert. The game was designed to appeal to
creative people looking for an alternative to games that focused on
destruction. The company's initial thinking was that it might get a
few incremental sales and garner goodwill with the community by
supporting Linux. What eGenesis discovered was that, per user, Linux
gamers were and continue to be their best customers. Each account, on
average, has generated twice as much revenue as those of Windows
gamers.

Cory Doctorow:
Phil sez, "Remember Al Fasoldt,
the journalist who disparaged Wikipedia? He was challenged by a
Techdirt writer to change an item and see if his change was found.
While Fasoldt dismissed the idea, Alex Halavais thought it was an
interesting idea. He made 13 changes to 13 different Wikipedia pages,
ranging from obvious to subtle. He figured he'd give them a couple of
weeks and then fix the ones that weren't caught. Every single change
was found and changed within hours."
