World's last tropical rainforest
World's last tropical rainforest
02/10/2004 02:44 AMThe price of food and reasonable medical care have fallen so
much that the world population swells to levels scarcely imaginable
200 years ago. Whenever you get a bunch of people together in a
tropical climate they inevitably seem to say to each other "Let's go
out and cut down all of the trees in the jungle so that we can grow
crops or graze cattle."
The last tropical rainforest left will very likely be the one right
here in central Panama for it supplies one thing that is undeniably
critical for the operation of the Canal: rain.
The heart of the 80 km-long Canal is a big lake, 26 meters
above sea level. Every transit of a ship through the Canal
requires that 52 million gallons of fresh water drain out of this lake
into the Caribbean and Pacific. The water is replenished from
surrounding rainforest. One thing that people in this part of
the world have learned is that when you cut down all the trees it
changes the local climate, generally cutting the amount of rain that
falls.
Panama is one of the few places in the world where you don't need a
hippie environmentalist to talk up the value of the rainforest.
Here everyone knows what the rainforest is worth... $600 million per
year in tolls.

World's Largest Truck
World's Largest Truck
06/21/2004 10:31 AM
What's huge,
slow, and capable of hauling up to 400 tons of bullshit? While my
first response would probably be Slashdot, too, in this case we're describing the
Liebherr T 282B truck, a 224 ton monster with a massive
3650-horsepower diesel engine. New Scientist has an interview with
Liebherr R&D head Francis Bartleby in which he drops a load of tasty T
282B trivia, like the fact that the huge diesel engine actually
generates electricity to power two electric drive motors, and the
story about the time a driver of one of the big trucks accidentally
crushed a normal-sized service truck and didn't even notice.

The "stout infantfish" has been identified as the smallest, lightest
animal with a backbone. The largest of only six specimen ever found is
just 8.4 millimeters long. Stout infantfish swim exclusively near
Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. Scientists who
studied the fish at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography point out
that "roughly 500,000 of these fish weighed together would barely tip
the scales at one pound."

06/29/2004 05:20 PMIn a surprise twist, a security flaw has been found in IE's impenetrable armor
that allows a trojan to install its payload and monitor for passwords
sent over https connections. Your account number? Now it's everyone's
account number! Thanks for sharing.
A "Browser Helper Object" is a DLL that allows developers to
customize and control Internet Explorer. When IE 4.x and higher
starts, it reads the registry to locate installed BHO's and then loads
them into the memory space for IE. Created BHO's then have access to
all the events and properties of that browsing session. This
particular BHO watches for HTTPS (secure) access to URLs of several
dozen banking and financial sites in multiple countries.
When an outbound HTTPS connection is made to such a URL, the BHO then
grabs any outbound POST/GET data from within IE before it is encrypted
by SSL. When it captures data, it creates an outbound HTTP connection
to http://www.refestltd.com/cgi-bin/yes.pl and feeds the captured data
to the script found at that location.

The World's Hottest Computer Lab
The World's Hottest Computer Lab
05/19/2004 12:03 AMHalf a world away from the calm beauty of Seattle and Puget Sound,
there’s a lab where software dreams come true. At Microsoft Research
Asia, the drive to succeed is as intense as the traffic that roars by
the front door in unbridled, chaotic fury. If Microsoft’s other
facilities around the globe seem idyllic, this one, in Beijing, China,
is pure street. Nearby high-rises compete with smokestacks for skyline
supremacy. Run-down buildings sit next to bustling consumer
electronics markets and the Beijing Satellite Manufacturing Factory,
where China conducts its spaceflight research. Microsoft’s mantra:
work hard to get in the door; work harder to survive; then work even
harder because the real work—that of an information technology world
leader—is just beginning.
