Hubble harvests 100 new planets during a 7-day sweep of the bulge of the Milky Way.. If confirmed it would almost double the number of known planets to about 230. "I think this work has the potential to be the most significant advance in discovering extra-solar planetary systems since the first planets were discovered in the mid-1990s."

At 8AM GMT-8 today, 11,000 spectators witnessed Mohave, CA, Airport become a SpacePort. Scaled Composites pilot Mike Melvill added his name to aviation history by taking SpaceShipOne to a height of 100km. The flight was not without mishap as the pioneer [reported] a loud bang during the flight. If it had been me at that moment, I'd now be sending my flight suit to the cleaner. Afterwards, the pilot pointed to a buckled rear of the space craft that may have produced the noise.

The Scaled Composites team can now seriously begin to compete for the $10 Million Ansari X Prize awarded for transporting a pilot and the weight of two passengers to an altitude of 100 kilometers twice within two weeks.

BTW, Paul Allen, co-founder of Micro$oft, is behind the Scaled Composites effort and FlipStart, the mini-PC posted below on 18 JUN.

Microsoft is going to sell one hundred Pocket PCs and smartphones running Windows Mobile by 2007, says Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO. What’s more Microsoft is setting smartphones, not PDAs its number one goal. The company expects converged devices offering both PDA and conventional phone functions to be a greater success rather than traditional Pocket PCs.

First sight of alien planets

First sight of alien planets 03/23/2005 08:36 PM
David Pescovitz: Astronomers used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope to see planets outside our solar system for the first time ever. Previously, scientists have inferred the existence of more than 100 planets by detecting a gravity-induced wobble or shift in light in the stars that they orbit. Yesterday, the astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and the Goddard Space Flight Center announced that they directly observed the infrared radiation emitted by two planets 153 and 500 light-years away. (Seen here is a NASA artist's concept.) From the New York Times:
Media Images Ssc2005-09B Small They said directly measuring light from the planets was a major step in the quest to understand what alien planets are made of, because different molecules in the atmosphere absorb infrared light in characteristic ways and allow scientists to compare these alien planets to those in the solar system. Ultimately, astronomers would like to know if Earth, with its ability to evolve and support life, is unique or common in the universe....

Dr. Geoffrey W. Marcy, a planet hunter at the University of California, Berkeley, called the results "the stuff of history books" and added, "With this result, we are closer to understanding our own human roots, chemically, among the stars."

AP - Astronomers have discovered four new planets in a week's time, an exciting end-of-summer flurry that signals a sharper era in the hunt for new worlds.

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors 03/23/2005 07:57 PM

Two teams of Astronomers this week discovered the color of two planets by using infrared radiation. This break-through will allow experts to discover what the planet’s surface or atmosphere are made of. This is a major finding. According to Astronomy Magazine,
Planet's Color

Charbonneau's group used the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera to home in on the light from TrES-1, a "hot Jupiter" zipping around a Sun-like star about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The astronomers tracked the intensity of two infrared "colors" as the planet passed behind its star, an event called secondary eclipse. The team subtracted the star's radiation from the total seen when the planet was not eclipsed by the star. Measuring the gas giant's infrared radiation allowed the team to calculate its temperature — a sizzling 1,450° F (1,060 kelvins). Charbonneau suspects his group has also found the spectral fingerprint of carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere, but, he says, "We're going to go back and get more data."

XM Discovers The Internet

XM Discovers The Internet 09/15/2004 01:39 PM
Well, it took them quite a while, but it appears that the folks at XM Radio have finally realized that internet radio might be a bit of competition for them, and have decided to start offering an internet radio service themselves. They offer discounts to those who also subscribe to their satellite radio service, but you have to wonder if someone at XM Radio is slapping his or her head realizing here was a way to offer radio without having to spend so much initially on launching satellites, ensuring that the company won't make money for many, many years. In the meantime, it's worth noting that this is the same XM Radio that just pulled a receiver off the market because (gasp!) they realized people could record their stations to computers, and they were afraid that the RIAA would sue them. Apparently, the folks at XM Radio haven't heard of stream ripping for online radio stations. Update: As a few people have pointed out, this new service, more than fear over ripping, may explain why XM pulled the service that let people move the satellite service to their PCs. Again, though, this seems short-sighted. Why not give your customers as many options as possible?

Circuits Discovers USB

Circuits Discovers USB 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

10USB.cover.jpg imageReading The Times' Circuits section invariably causes a single metallic tear to vent from my society-integration hardware, wetting my dome. Sometimes it's from the cognitive trauma of trying to parse whether or not they're even talking about technology anymore or just repurposing old articles from the Steamer Tramp Watch column or something, but sometimes -- rare, precious times -- I get misty as I watch them discover something for the first time, as a retarded child waking from a coma would marvel at a flower, or toilet paper, fawning over and cuddling and gleefully showing the new technology to us. This week's blissful bursting into awareness? Motherfucking USB. Awwww. (Thanks to the Circuits team's case worker, Jeff.)
