I don't know if it's as big a deal everywhere else as it is here (probably not) but Vegas is turning 100 years old this year. I wrote a little entry about it in my blog. That in itself probably wouldn't be Boing Boing worthy, but I'll tell you what is. Las Vegas is putting on a free concert with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer. There will be an outdoor concert in the beginning of July. Tickets are going to be given out on Monday online so any readers world wide can get some tickets and have a great reason to visit Vegas (then stay a couple days and enjoy Vegas for the fourth of july) Just wanted to let my fellow readers know about it.

Don't just protect the unconceived:
protect the inanimate!
05/09/2004 02:30 PM
Fafnir of Fafblog has written a good think-piece explaining the logical next step in the Bush administration's campaign to protect the rights of the unconceived: protecting the rights of the inanimate.
This is yknow a huge step backwards for women's health and for contraception and the prevention of abortions. But it is a huge step forward for what we at Fafblog like to call the "rights of the unconceived," which is just a few short steps from what we are really lookin forward to which is the rights of the inanimate.

I have personally spent hours an hours talkin to cans, waffle irons, boxes, printer cartridges and forks and they all dream of one thing: no longer bein treated as second-class citizens in the United States.

Codejack's really hot chili

Codejack's really hot chili 12/17/2004 06:40 PM
It's winter again, and that means chili time. There's not much better than coming in out of the cold to a good hot (hot!) bowl of chili, preferably served over macaroni with grated cheddar cheese on top. Now, everyone makes chili differently, so of course no one is actually going to follow my recipe exactly, but that's all right. If you want inferior chili, that's your right as an American. Foreigners, you may be out of luck, but then, do you have any business making chili, anyway? This applies to Californians and New Englanders, too.

Woman who found finger in chili won't
sue
04/13/2005 11:51 AM
David Pescovitz: Last month, I posted about a woman who reportedly found a fingertip in a spoonful of chili at a Wendy's in San Jose, California. Now, Anna Ayala has surprisingly dropped her claim against the restaurant because, her attorney says, it "has caused her great emotional distress and continues to be difficult emotionally." Wendy's has offered a bounty of $50,000 to the first person who can positively identify the source of the finger. From the Associated Press:
Wendy's maintains the finger did not enter the food chain in its ingredients. None of the employees at the San Jose store had lost any fingers, and no suppliers of Wendy's ingredients reported any hand or finger injuries, the company said.

The Santa Clara County coroner's office used a partial fingerprint to search for a match in an electronic database but came up empty. DNA testing is still being conducted on the finger.

UPDATE: Thanks to the BB readers who pointed to reports that finger-finder Anna Ayala has a suspiciously litigious past and that last week police se arched her home.

Woman finds finger in Wendy's chili

Woman finds finger in Wendy's chili 03/24/2005 12:05 AM
David Pescovitz: No, it's not an urban legend. Yesterday, a woman at a Wendy's in Santa Clara, California put a spoonful of chili in her mouth, paused, and spit out a human fingertip. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Martin Fenstersheib said today the woman was horrified "due to the unpleasant sensation of having this (object) in her mouth...."

The restaurant at 1405 Monterey Highway was temporarily closed Tuesday night to allow health officials to impound the remaining chili, which was prepared on site, using a variety of ingredients. Health officials also seized all of the restaurant's remaining stock of ingredients, which will be inspected, and traced back to their manufacturer.

Since all of the workers at the restaurant were in possession "of all 10 of their fingers," health inspectors assume the finger likely entered the food chain as a result of the manufacturing process, according to county Environmental Resources Director Ben Gale.

Wi-fi lifeline for Yak farmers in Nepal 05/27/2004 03:34 PM
BBC story about a WiFi project in Nepal that allows yak farmers in remote Himalayan locations to keep in touch with their families back home. File under pretty frickin' amazing. Snip:

"They are taking advantage of a wi-fi network set up in a remote region of the mountain kingdom where there are no phones or other means of communication.

It is the result of a campaign led by local teacher Mahabir Pun, and backed by volunteers and donations, to bring the internet to an isolated part of the world.

So far, the Nepal Wireless Networking project has hooked up five villages in the area using wireless technology."
