An arresting insanity

An arresting insanity 08/29/2004 09:44 PM

After watching the Bikes Against Bush guy getting arrested, I really can't believe they're confiscating all his equipment until after the RNC for vandalism which will be dismissed. Leonard pulled the diamonds out of the Slashdot thread about it. Honestly, it's a clever hack and even if the designer used it at the DNC, writing "KERRY LIES" and "BUSH RULES" I would still be impressed with the technology that allows someone to type something into a website that gets received by a bike that prints it out in chalk.

The original Indymedia thread mentions that Sunday morning he was released, and could get another bike running again, but needs funds. I just dropped him some money on the paypal button listed on the main Bikes Against Bush site so I hope him and Yury can get something rolling in the next day or so.

Top Fuel Insanity

Top Fuel Insanity 01/04/2005 06:02 PM

I'm posting this from the waiting lounge at my auto dealer where I've been paging through the latest Motor Trend. This month, they have a "By the numbers..." section on Top Fuel dragsters (you know, the long, narrow ones). Some insane statistics:

  • The average Top Fuel engine puts out 7,500 b.h.p. This is up from the 3,000 they were putting out 15 years ago when I was in high school and obsessed with this stuff.

  • A Top Fueler uses almost 23 gallons of gas for warm-up, burnout, and a single quarter-mile run. This is 85-percent nitromethane and 15-percent alcohol and costs about $18 a gallon.

  • It takes 900 b.h.p. just to turn the supercharger on top of the motor. It pushes 45.5 psi of boost. A Porsche 911 Turbo S does about half that.

  • Top Fuelers go from 0-60 in 0.84 seconds and cover the quarter mile in about 4.5 seconds.

  • Craziest stat of all: the exhaust gases shot upwards out of the headers create 800 lbs. of downforce at full acceleration.

Someone give me one. It looks like I'd only need about two seconds to meet God himself.

Insanity Chic in Hollywood

Insanity Chic in Hollywood 02/10/2004 02:50 AM
Mark Ebner -- investigative journalist and contributor to the jaded, snarky, underground Hollywood rag LA Innuendo -- has a new book out on February 24. "Hollywood, Interrupted: Insanity Chic in Babylon -- The Case Against Celebrity," co-written with Andrew Breitbart (Matt Drudge's right-hand guy). Basically 416 pages of celebrities behaving badly. Read how Mike Ovitz's then six-year-old son once peed on a tree in the front yard, yelling "My mom said I could, and mom is in charge of you, I could have you fired!" to his nanny when she scolded him. There's supposed to be another section in here that chronicles some Powerful Hollywood People engaging in cybersexual harassment with a young AOL customer support agent. Link

Cost Per Click Insanity

Cost Per Click Insanity 05/19/2004 12:14 AM
According to Search Engine Lowdown the cost per click auction model of on-line advertising can get a bit out of hand from time to time. Narrowly-defined keywords can lead to short-term bidding wars. In March '04, eDiets.com and SouthBeachDiet.com managed to drive the cost-per-click of the phrase "weight loss diet" from $2.00 to over $75.00. Wow. I knew that some specific markets have significantly higher than average CPC rates, that seems a bit nuts....

On-line Payment Insanity

On-line Payment Insanity 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
You know, I really can't wait until all these stupid little on-line credit card payment systems just shrivel up and die, leaving the only logical players: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. I'm so sick of having to enter my credit card number into yet another system just to register a piece of $18 software. God, haven't we cracked this nut yet? It's 2004 for god's sake! Note to small software publishers. If you want my money, please make it...

More Phone Number Insanity

More Phone Number Insanity 04/13/2004 01:51 AM
You may recall last year when a Chinese airline bought the phone number 8888 8888 for $280,000. The number 8 is often considered lucky in Chinese culture. At the time, we compared it to the excesses of domain name speculation though, in their defense, the airline says they bought the phone number because it was easy to remember and not because of any superstitious beliefs. However, it appears that things were just starting to ramp up. The latest news is that the phone number 135 8585 8585 has been sold for $1.1 million. According to the article, the pronunciation of the phone number could be loosely translated into "let me be rich be rich be rich be rich." Of course, one would have to be rich to spend $1.1 million on a phone number - and you have to wonder how much longer someone who throws money away like that will remain wealthy.

Sudden Sun 03/22/2005 03:19 PM
The weather’s been terrible pretty well all month, we’ve hardly seen the sun and the temperature’s hardly been over 10°C. Then my integrity slipped...

G5 develops sudden insomnia

G5 develops sudden insomnia 08/19/2004 01:53 AM
It has been a long time since Apple made a little oops in the software update process. Since the last update-round (presumably OSX 10.3.5) a lot of single processor G5's have trouble sleeping, and so do their owners. In an Apple forum almost 150 complaints have accumulated about this issue. Put the Mac to sleep, the HD spins down, the screen goes black, but the fans keep running. Sofar the only "feedback" from Apple has been a not very helpful info doc.

Hopefully they didn't go home for the weekend before trying to solve this one....

Sony's Sudden Samurai

Sony's Sudden Samurai 03/14/2005 04:01 PM
Business Week’s opinion about what Sir Howard needs to do to fix the company… “It wasn’t as far-fetched as, say, a geeky high school student morphing overnight into your web-spinning, friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man. But the Mar. 7 announcement that Sir Howard Stringer would take over management control of Sony (SNE), a $68 billion consumer-electronics and entertainment colossus, came pretty close to defying belief in Japan. Sure, Sony is a much-diminished force. But was it so…

Matias Adds Sudden Motion Sensor Tech to

Matias Adds Sudden Motion Sensor Tech to
Laptop Bags
04/01/2005 03:21 AM
Jeff Carlson (~270 words)

Matias Adds Sudden Motion Sensor Tech to Laptop Bags -- Laptop bag designer Edgar Matias announced today that his company has licensed Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor technology for use in a new line of bags for PowerBook and iBook portable computers. First announced in the 31-Jan-05 revision of Apple's PowerBook G4 line, Sudden Motion Sensor technology automatically detects changes in axis position and accelerated motion, then instantly parks the heads of your hard drive to reduce the chance of data loss. The new models in Matias's Laptop Armor/Inflatable line of bags includes a similar sensor chip. When the sensor detects that the wearer is toppling (backward, forward, or to either side) due to the weight of the bag's contents, self-inflating balloons deploy around the bag to add further protection to the laptop and the person; balloons in the forward-facing backpack straps provide protection in the event of a forward topple. A vital catalyst to speed the inflation of the balloons is a secret ingredient derived from domesticated foliage grown widely in British Columbia, Canada. The company refused to elaborate further. Once deployed, the bag must be returned Matias so that the bags can be refolded and the internal air canisters replaced. For an extra $50 up-front fee, Matias will perform this service up to five times. People with exaggerated balance issues can also opt to purchase a $35 self-refill kit that includes the replacement canisters and detailed folding instructions. The Laptop Armor/Inflatable bags, ranging in size to accommodate all Apple laptop sizes, are available as of 01-Apr-05 for $200. [JLC]
