Etymotic Research Inc. used this week's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to introduce its 6i Isolator Earphones, designed especially for use with Apple's iPod. The new US$149 headphones are expected to ship in July. Similar in design to Etymotic's popular ER-6 model, the 6i earphones are in-ear headphones that have been molded in white to complement Apple's iPod. The 6i comes with additional eartips, extra filters and a small carrying case.

Rio Carbon Limited Edition

Rio Carbon Limited Edition 08/31/2004 07:44 AM

Carbon_LE_Box.jpg imageI'm glad Rio is actually going to push their new 5GB hard disk-based Carbon player a bit instead of just letting it languish in the market - it looks like a pretty solid product (I haven't used it yet). To that end, they're running a special promotion for the first 500 people to order the new $250 player that includes a custom-engraved, numbered back, a free shipping upgrade to 2 day air, and a 3 month/20 track download option from Napster. Oh, and lest we forget, a limited edition collectors box that looks suspiciously like someone else's. It might not be enough to sway undecided purchasers, but if you were already leaning that way, might as well give it a whirl.

iPod language app limited to newer iPods

iPod language app limited to newer iPods 07/11/2004 05:32 PM
A few weeks ago, Xeni posted about Talking Panda, an iPod application containing hundreds of common words and phrases in your choice of three languages. It seemed like a great deal for $10, so I bought the French version. (I'm going to be spending several months in Paris in the fall.) The bummer though is that for some reason, Talking Panda requires iPods with firmware v2.0 or later. It won't run on the first or second-generation iPods (like mine). Basically, if you bought your iPod before May 2003, you're out of luck. I emailed info@talkingpanda.com and developer Bob Ippolito responded right away:
"The iPod 1.x firmware is simply not capable of using Talking Panda. You can either purchase a new iPod, give the software to a friend as a gift, or I can offer you a refund of $8. Unfortunately it costs us $1 for each transaction (once for sale, once for refund), so I can not offer you a full refund."
The $2 loss won't kill me and, besides, it's my own fault for not reading the system requirements on the Talking Panda site. But I am annoyed disappointed that I can't use the software! It sounds like a useful application and I wish there was a way to get it to run on my iPod. Or that Bob would develop a version that does. Link

UPDATE: Bob writes...
"You should ask Apple, not me. The revision 1 and 2 iPod hardware is technically capable of doing the things that the newer iPods do, at least in this case, but they simply have chosen not to add the functionality to the older firmware. If you want to do cool new things with the Notes functionality, you simply need to buy a new iPod. Seriously, there is no possible way for me to do anything for older iPods, short of developing a new firmware image myself and having the users void their warranty and lose iTunes integration! The iPod firmware is an extremely closed environment and I was lucky that I was able to get the kind of integration that I did."

Hearing conservation and earphones

Hearing conservation and earphones 05/28/2004 04:46 AM

Today I met the founder and president of Sensaphonics, Micha el Santucci. He is a hearing conservation expert and audiologist. He is one of the few audiologists who work with the music industry. The relationship is interesting. Hearing conservation is about protecting your ears from continued exposure to loud sounds in order to preserve your hearing. He told us that baby boomers have a higher rate of hearing loss than senior citizens, probably because of devices such as portable music devices. He shows us pictures of a healthy inner ear and a damaged inner ear and had the same effect on my as the healthy lung and smoker lung photos we often see.

The traditional logic behind headphones and earphones is to increase the volume of the music reaching your ears for better sound. The brain compensates for background noise so, as most people have experienced, music in your car stereo suddenly sounds loud when you come to a stop and the background noise disappears. The damage to your ear is based on the total amplitude of the sound, whereas the perceived loudness of the signal is based on the amplitude above the background noise.

One way to have great earphones and not lose your hearing is to isolate and block the outside sound. Then you can listen to music at much lower volumes and it will still sound loud and clear. This protects your hearing while providing super high fidelity.

This is the theory behind the Shure E2cs and the E5cs that I've written about before. Michael takes this a step further and replaces the ear plugs that come with the Shures and replaces them with custom silicon molds. Sensaphonics also makes their own earphones.

Today, my second cousin Cornelius and I got molds taken of our ears. They are going to send me their ProPhonic Soft 2X earphones as well as molds that will work with my E5cs. I look forward to comparing the sound and protecting my hearing.

HP Offers iPod Mini

HP Offers iPod Mini 06/06/2005 12:13 AM
HP has expanded its line of digital music players to include Apple's IPod Mini. The company said that the miniature player will be available from its Web site beginning Sunday, with the Apple IPod Mini from HP hitting major retailers shortly thereafter. HP's prices will be the same--$200 for a 4GB model, and $250 for a 6GB model.

HP's enormous retail distribution channel and emphasis on appealing to Windows-centric users may give the IPod Mini further penetration into the mass market. HP and Apple first announced a partnership more than a year ago, to bring IPods to HP's customers and make the devices available through HP's considerable retail distribution channels. HP also includes Apple's ITunes software pre-installed on all its PCs.
