SOFTWARE GIANT Microsoft has actually paid the European Union a $605 million anti-trust fine, despite appealing. Microsoft was ordered to pay the fine and make changes in its operating system to remove media player and disclose information about its work group server software. According to an EU spokesperson, a cheque has arrived from the Lair of the Vole in Redmond. If Microsoft wins its appeal, Steve will get it back, said the EU.

Microsoft asks for help from hackers 06/17/2005 03:58 PM

“The random chatter of several hundred Microsoft engineers filled the cavernous executive briefing center recently at the company’s sprawling campus outside Seattle. Within minutes after their meeting was convened, however, the hall became hushed. Hackers had successfully lured a Windows laptop onto a malicious wireless network. “It was just silent,” said Stephen Toulouse, a program manager in Microsoft’s security unit. “You couldn’t hear anybody breathe.” ” [Continue reading Microsoft asks for help from hackers]…

I think I need to open a company and name it Mickeypoft and re-sell a customized Linux build under the same name. I wonder if Microsoft will pay us 20 million for the name. I am simply amazed that they would do this but it is a major win for Linspire formerly Lindows. I always like to see the underdog to make out. [Techdirt]

Cory Doctorow gave a talk today at Microsoft, asking the company to go back to its roots on the issue of Digital "Rights" Management (aka Digital Restrictions Management), or DRM. He posted the talk on his website. Here's what he tried to persuade the Microsoft folks:

1. That DRM systems don't work 2. That DRM systems are bad for society 3. That DRM systems are bad for business 4. That DRM systems are bad for artists 5. That DRM is a bad business-move for MSFT

Microsoft Asks Court To Fine Lindows Yet

One thing you can definitely say about Michael Robertson is that he knows how to use controversy and lawsuits to get publicity. After first losing the trademark dispute with Microsoft over the Lindows name in Benelux, he changed the product name to Lin---s. This didn't make Microsoft happy, so they changed the name again to Linspire. However, it appears Microsoft is still not satisfied and is asking the court to fine them again - which must delight Robertson for the publicity he's getting. However, when you look at the details, this move by Microsoft seems particularly petty (though, it must be admitted, switching the name to Lin---s was fairly petty as well). Here, the complaint is that in the copyright notice on the Linspire page, it still says that Linspire is owned by the company Lindows. Microsoft is claiming that this will confuse people - which is a huge stretch. The judge should toss this out. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Lindows/Linspire should stop wasting time over things like this and spend their money and effort on things that actually make their products more useful.

Microsoft has started distributing two online surveys to Linux User Groups and Linux users in general, one asking primarily about home computer use, the other about business use. They apparently don't plan to release the results of their surveys, so we and other people in the open source community are asking you to look at them and post your answers and comments here and on other appropriate sites where, in open source style, everyone can see them. Read on for more information and links, and please help spread the word about these surveys; as far as we know, this is the first time Microsoft has asked Linux users why we use Linux instead of their products, and the more results, the merrier. Author's Note: I'll reveal some of *my* answers to Microsoft's questions in a comment I'll post shortly after this story goes live, just to kick things off.
