Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More 06/11/2004 07:05 PM

  • NY Times: The Disability Lobby and Voting. ome supporters of voter-verifiable paper trails question whether disability-rights groups have gotten too close to voting machine manufacturers. Besides the donation by Diebold to the National Federation of the Blind, there have been other gifts. According to Mr. Dickson, the American Association of People with Disabilities has received $26,000 from voting machine companies this year. The real issue, though, is that disability-rights groups have been clouding the voting machine debate by suggesting that the nation must choose between accessible voting and verifiable voting.
  • The voting-machine scandal just grows and grows. When the National Federation of the Blind accepts $1 million from Diebold, maker of the scandalously lousy machines that California recently banned, you have to shake your head in amazement at how putrid this entire situation is getting. The League of Women Voters' support of unverifiable voting machines is another astounding situation. Barbara Simons, a California woman who's an expert in computer technology, is running for president (AP) of the organization in a protest vote. I hope she wins and, with others who can't fathom the league's refusal to recognize reality, gets the organization to change its odd stance. The fact remains simple. There is no way anyone should trust to verify the validity of votes cast with some of these electronic voting machines unless we create a voter-verifiable paper trail and have frequent, random audits of precincts. Disabled people deserve a way to cast a fair vote, honestly counted. Some of the groups representing them -- taking money from the voting machine lobby -- would rather risk entire elections than make sure we do this right. It's a shame.

A speech class professor, Rosalyn Kahn, told students they could get extra credit for writing an anti-war letter to President Bush. To receive credit, the letter had to protest the war, and the letter had to be mailed to President Bush. (I would find this just as worthy of mention if she had required students to write a pro-war letter.) Then, according to a press release, "One week later, Kahn again required students to write letters with a specific political viewpoint, this time to California State Senator Jack Scott. Professor Kahn collected the letters from the class and personally delivered them to Scott."

    Quazal - launches Rendez-vous - a lobby
    service
    02/10/2004 02:47 AM

I finally get to break somethign before Clay, Ross or jason C.

Quazal has launched a new service called Rendez-vous - a lobby service - for on-line gaming.

Welcome to the world of on-line gaming and social software.

These folks at Quazal offer an on-line gaming 'state' engine (called Net-Z), as well as MMOG (massively multi-player on-line game) infrastrcture technology (called Eterna.)  Now they've complemented their product line with a social networking kind of 'lobby service'. Totally coolio!

    Provided Services

    • Authenticat ion: manages player logins and ensures the integrity and confidentiality of data sent across the network.
    • Secure Connection: establishes a secure connection between two stations. This connection may be made either directly or routed via a secure station, which is usually the server. In conjunction with the Authentication service this service creates a secure transport layer.
    • Account Management: enables players to create lobby account(s) and allocates various access rights.
    • Matchmaking : enables players to search for and locate various gatherings in order to participate in game, competition, tournament, chat, or forum sessions, for example.
    • Competition : manages the organisation and outcomes of matches played between players as well as pertinent statistical values concerning any given competition.
    • Friends : enables players to classify their relationship with other players and to create categorized player lists, e.g. Friend, BlackListed.
    • Messaging: enables players to send messages to each other in much the same way as e-mail.
    • Persistent Store: enables players to download content from and upload content to the lobby.
    • Peer: this service is provided by one client to another and enables messages and station specific information to be shared between the two stations.
    • Cluster Management: monitors and controls configuration of the ensemble of lobby services. This service is accessed by the lobby administrator via the Rendez-Vous management console. Players do not use this service.

I wonder if they know anything about Apple's Rendezvous Probably not.  What a great example of folks in the gaming world - nothaving a lcue on what's going on in the PC world.  Probably doesn't matter though.

As a coinkidink - this sort of matching, management, tournament stuff is.... (ooooops gotta shut up now.)

  • CNet: Tech heavies support challenge to copyright law. But members of the nascent coalition, including Intel, Sun Microsystems, Verizon Communications, SBC, Qwest, Gateway and BellSouth, are lending their support to a proposal by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., to rewrite that part of the DMCA. Boucher's bill says that descrambling utilities can be distributed, and copy protection can be circumvented as long as no copyright infringement is taking place.
  • The headline is a little misleading, because Intel, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Apple are among the notably missing companies from this list. Then again, they've mostly signed on with Hollywood and the music industry to help control what customers of electronic gear are allowed to do with what they've purchased. But the presence of the big regional phone companies is a welcome one. They still have a lot of clout, and they could be a huge boost for legislation that might begin to restore some balance in the copyright debate. Boucher 's bill (H.R. 107) deserves your support, too. Please call your member of Congress.
