HP New Media Center and Desktop PCs

HP New Media Center and Desktop PCs 03/29/2005 05:42 PM

hp_media_centerwht.jpgHP's new Media Center PC has more than a passing resemblance to the Mac mini, which might be on purpose, considering the new units include optional box-top docking stations for the iPod (much like the Mac mini was rumored to have had in development). Whether you see it or not, the silver and white is a welcome deviation from standard PC fare, although HP's Media Center PCs in particular have been mightly nice looking of late.

The new case design will be featured on both the Media Center PCs as well as the new desktop vanilla versions. The entry-level model is above, and the Media Center version is after the jump. (Thanks, Matt!)

Umm… OK… Go HP? [MacMiniGear]

hai_mce_home_control.jpg imageI've not used HAI's home automation products, so I can't vouch for eHomeUpgrade's claim they are "the best," but if you've already invested in their products and a Windows Media Center PC, you might be interested to know that HAI has announced a new bit of plug-in software for Media Center 2005 that will allow you to take control of your lighting, security, temperature, and what not via the regular interface or MCE remote. It's not free, though, which is sort of a bummer, especially since it is clearly something that is only useful for HAI users, and no price has yet been announced.

09/23/2004 12:21 AM

The folks at WiFi management software and services company Sputnik have just released a major software and services upgrade. Sputnik Control Center is the easy-to-use, easy-to-buy software that allows you to manage hundreds of WiFi access points as a single system, manage access control, create and deploy captive portals, track usage by AP and user, set up network policies, and much much more. Check it out: there's a Sputnik Hotspot Kit for only $599. that includes Two Sputnik AP 160s and two Sputnik Control Center licenses. Makes it really easy to become a WiFi access provider, or to install secure wireless across a company or campus.

SputnikNet enables you to run a managed wireless network without having to set up or run your own server. With SputnikNet, you get a hosted Sputnik Control Center set up just for you. Just plug Sputnik-Powered APs into broadband Internet, and manage your wireless network. You can manage as many access points and wireless networks as you like for only $19.95 per access point per month.

Congratulations, Sputnik folks! Full disclosure: I'm a founder and advisor for Sputnik, so don't just take my word for it - go and see what others are saying. Daily Wireless has a good review, as does WiFi Networking News and WiFi Planet.
