Freedom of Information and Copyright

Freedom of Information and Copyright 09/01/2004 08:40 PM

Ever had trouble convincing someone that copyright matters beyond just copyright? That it increasingly bumps into questions of censorship, freedom of information, even plain-old civics? If so, here's a nice anecdote to pull out next time.

From the AP:

The Defense Department spent $70,500 to produce a Humphrey Bogart-themed video called "The People's Right to Know" to teach employees to respond to citizen requests for information. But when it came to showing the tape to the public, the Pentagon censored some of the footage.

Why? Copyright concerns. Read more.

Thanks, Chris.

Virtual Information and Intellectual Freedom: Challenges for Knowledge Organizer and Information Manager
http://w ww.lisnews.com/article.pl?sid=05/01/15/0742229

Development of the Internet and the increasing popularity of the WWW have opened up a new realm of information access, storage, and delivery for librarians and information professionals. Libraries are striving to respond to the pervasive and persistent growth of global networking and manage the demand for access to this dynamic medium. Working in the trenches of the digital revolution, librarians and information professionals are beginning to offer Internet services to patrons; their work marks the beginning of the grassroots implementation of the “Public” digital library.

New Mozilla site goes live: looks
better, needs work on information
architecture and writing
09/01/2004 04:21 AM
Ben just announced that the new Mozilla site that I commented upon earlier has gone live. It does look a lot better visually, but as I remarked earlier when reviewing the beta version (and offered to help with), I think the Firefox page could still use some work on the writing and information architecture. The writing needs to be punchier and shorter and there need to be fewer styles and links on the first page. And somebody needs to do something about the car.
