Busting Windows-to-Linux development
myths
04/28/2004 10:29 AM
If you've been developing for Windows for (n+1) years, you might consider venturing into open source software development a daunting prospect. Reading the Free Software Foundation Web site makes it look like all development is done in straight C -- of course there's no Visual C++ or Visual Basic. Linux doesn't have its own component model and there is nothing even remotely like DirectX for low-level hardware access. It's just too hard for the dyed-in-the-wool Windows developer to program for Linux.

Busting your ass CAN pay off 04/08/2005 06:04 PM
Be coming a '??' (tradesman) in Japan. A 'gaijin' entrepreneur has been detailing his woodblock printing craft and business in a self-published quarterly journal over the past 15+ years. I found his series of autobiographical essays to be a very worthwhile read, reminiscent of Pirsig's first novel for some reason.

EFF patent-busting in the NYT

EFF patent-busting in the NYT 07/05/2004 06:17 AM
My cow-orker Jason Schultz made the NYT this weekend in a piece about EFF's fight to bust crappy Internet patents. My favorite bit of the article is this bit of deadpan juxtaposition:
Another patent on the foundation's list covers a way to make telephone calls over the Internet. Mr. Schultz said the company holding that patent, Acceris Communications of Toronto, had drawn the group's attention by filing an infringement lawsuit against a relatively small service provider, ITXC, rather than larger companies like Vonage Holdings. Small companies rarely have the resources to fight infringement suits, Mr. Schultz said.

The president of Acceris, Kelly D. Murumets, rejected the charge that the company was pursuing only small rivals.

"Acceris has not targeted smaller players," Ms. Murumets wrote in an e-mail message. "In point of fact, and only after offering a license, Acceris filed a lawsuit against a major player" in the industry, ITXC.

Patent Busting Posses!

Patent Busting Posses! 07/05/2004 10:47 AM
“Start forming your patent busting posses! Here are the EFF Patent Busting Project’s ten most-wanted patents—the ones that pose the biggest threat to the public domain. Thanks to all of your submissions in the patent busting contest, we’ve identified ten of the worst Internet and software-related patents in the U.S. What makes these patents among the worst of the bunch? Try the fact that their owners are threatening and filing suits against small businesses, individuals and nonprofits, not to mention the threats to free expression and innovation that each of them pose. From here on out, EFF’s team of lawyers and technologists will be tracking down prior art and preparing to petition the Patent and Trademark Office for revocation of these offenders’ patents. To do this, we’ll need your help to find prior art and get the busting process underway. Check out each patent and see how you can help bust it by clicking on the images below.”

EFF Patent Busting Project

EFF Patent Busting Project 06/12/2004 06:10 AM

Help EFF stamp out stupid patents! Know of any stupid patents being used to hurt the little guys? Send them to the EFF. What a great project.

Electronic Frontier Foundation
Enter the Patent Busting Contest!

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Patent Busting Project is here to protect you from dangerously bad patents. And you can help us pick which patents we're going to bust first!

We're currently seeking nominations for ten patents that deserve to be revoked because they are invalid. Sadly, we don't have the resources to challenge every stupid patent out there. In order to qualify for our ten most-wanted list, a patent must be software or Internet-related and there must be a good reason to suspect that the patent claims are invalid. We're especially interested in patents that target tools of free expression, such as streaming media, blogging tools, and voice over IP (VoIP) technology. Most importantly, the patent-holder must be aggressively enforcing its patent and suing (or threatening to sue) alleged infringers. We're particularly interested in cases where the patent-holder is trying to force small businesses, individuals, nonprofits, and consumers to pay licensing fees. Deadline to enter is June 23.

On June 30, the Patent Busting Project's team of tough lawyers and brainy geeks will announce the contest winners – or losers, depending on how you look at it. And that's when the real fight for great justice begins. We'll be needing your help to research prior art for each patent and offer your technical expertise or historical knowledge. Using a legal process called "reexamination," the Patent Busting Project will ultimately go to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and attempt to take those bad patents off the books.

The Copyright Cops Really Are Busting

The Copyright Cops Really Are Busting
Down Doors
01/09/2004 09:50 PM
Last month when it was announced that the RIAA was hiring the former head of the ATF, I joked about how the copyright cops might soon be busting down your door. What I didn't realize was that it's no joke, and it's already happening. Found on Slashdot is the news that the RIAA has been hiring ex-law enforcement officials, outfitting them with police-style outfits, including black "raid" vests with yellow lettering stenciled on the back to spell RIAA, and sending them out to scare unauthorized vendors of CDs and confiscating what they find. While I have no sympathy for those selling such CDs, this does seem to go well over the line. The RIAA claims that it's very effective, and they don't mean for the vendors to actually think they're police - but the effect suggests otherwise. In that case, you could make the argument that they're falsely impersonating law enforcement officials and stealing the CDs they take. They do make the vendor sign an "incident report" indicating that confiscating the CDs is "voluntary" - but if you're scared to death you're about to be arrested, it doesn't seem very voluntary.

Patent Busting Project by EFF heats up 06/30/2004 07:48 AM

The EFF has a pretty huge list of Patents that they feel need to be squashed or redefined. Companies have been taking advantage of loose patenting laws and taking advantage of small companies that cannot defend themselves. Well they are now going after the first 10 and will ask the US Patent office to re-examine. [Wired] [EFF Patent Busting Project]

Malware Writer Myth-Busting, Part II

Malware Writer Myth-Busting, Part II 04/15/2005 06:43 PM
Recently we wrote about the trend of virus writers shift ing their efforts to spyware -- same thrill, more money. Another story today contradicts the theory that these scofflaws are a bunch of ne'er-do-well capitalists, or at least most of them. Rather than profit-seeking, most viruses are written for the challenge with little regard for the ultimate impact. Or so says Symantec expert Sarah Gordon, who has apparently interviewed hundreds of malware writers over the years. (Why Symantec has an employee dedicated to studying virus-writer psychology is another topic altogether.) Another misconception she's found: her interview subjects often have significant others -- deflating that old stereotype of lonely, loveless nerds. Rather, they vary considerably in their social and demographic profiles. Maybe you can't trust every assumption about virus writers. Next thing you know, we'll find out they don't have computers either.

Sharp Healsio Steam Oven

Sharp Healsio Steam Oven 03/28/2005 07:50 AM

sharp_healsio.jpgSharp's Healsio oven puts a spin on the traditional convention or microwave oven, using the power of steam heated to about 570 degrees to cook your food. The steam apparently reduces the total fat content by effectively melting it while still preserving the food's nutrients. Sharp even demonstrated toasting bread, proving that not everything comes out as glue. The oven allows the user to steam, grill, roast, bake, (broast, brible), defrost and reheat their food by spraying the steam directly onto the food. Sharp's press release goes into excruciating detail on how their new $1,100 oven works and the health benefits it offers. Launched in Singapore, it will reach North America later this year.

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven

Sharp AX-HC1: Superheated Steam Oven 08/23/2004 08:53 AM

sharp_steam5.jpg imageSharp has a new small oven that uses superheated steam to not only cook and reheat food, but melt excess salt and fat away from meats and other delicious dishes. Sharp quotes up to eight times as much fat removed by cooking a steak in the AX-HC1 ovens than frying in a pan, while reheating tempura and other fried foods removed up to 13% of their oil content.

Sharp will be releasing the oven in the US sometime soonish, although for now the $1,150 is Japan-only. I'm waiting for the oven that uses superheated steam to turn all my food into a nutritionless, guiltless slurry.

Microwave Technology Will Stop Vehicles

Microwave Technology Will Stop Vehicles 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

Law enforcement may soon be able to “Nuke” your car and stop it wherever and whenever they need it stopped.  James Tatoian, chief executive of Eureka Aerospace in Pasadena, California, is developing a system that uses microwave energy to interfere with microchips inside cars. Once the chip is overloaded with excessive current, the car ceases to function, and will gradually decelerate on its own, he said. "If you put approximately 10 or 15 kilovolts per meter on a target for a few seconds, you should be able to bring it to a halt,"

Most cars built in the United States since 1982 have some type of on-board microprocessor. Today, the processors are advanced enough to control functions such as fuel injection and GPS equipment.  Eureka Aerospace hopes to have a working prototype that the sheriff's department can test by late summer. The National Institute of Justice and the U.S. Marine Corps may also be potential early clients. The company's early tests indicate that the car-stopping device should be functional at a range of 300 feet.  If the technology is able to prove worthy, it may also change the behavior of potential criminals. Heal said most people who lead police on car chases have never committed such an act before, and they might think twice if they recall the presence of such a device.

Then, after I had gone to work (in the next room), you could listen to the messages I had left for you on the microwave's integrated voice recorder. Messages like, "I have removed the shielding from this oven. The uneasy feeling you feel inside is the pinging and popping of your boiling liver. Also, this instrument of your utter destruction was a relative value at $90." (Thanks, Dennis!)
