Betting it all on AdSense

Betting it all on AdSense

Betting it all on AdSense 07/01/2004 01:38 PM

"I run a high volume web site that has been up and going for about a year and a half now. Until the start of this year I was relying on donations and my own bank balance to keep the site going. This became harder as time went on and the site became more popular - until the day I discovered AdSense."

Back before I left Kinja, Gina and I made a bet about the ads on the Kinja site -- how long before non-text ads appear? Advertising has never been one of my favorite revenue models for a web site, and when we made the decision to go down that road at Kinja, it was with reservation that I agreed. Too often web sites allow the ads to run amok, ruining the experience of the site. But in discussing the ad approach, we agreed that we'd use text ads, and limit their placement. It sounded like a way that ads could work without ruining the experience of Kinja: reading.

But all you have to do is look at Nick's Gawker Media properties (Gawker, Gizmodo, Wonkette, etc.) to see that our view of advertising -- and belief of when advertising has run amok -- are not aligned. And I knew it was simply a matter of time after my departure that gaudier, flashier ads would appear on Kinja. So Gina and I decided to place a wager on exactly how long that would be. Alas, there were no winners, because we couldn't disagree about how long it would take. We both knew it would be fast. And we both bet it would be less than a month. I've been gone two weeks and two days from Kinja, and there's already a giant CNet ad right in the middle of the digests. Blech.

Betting on the future of music 02/10/2004 02:42 AM

I ran across Terra Naomi (who also has a blog) the other day and after hearing her music samples I was totally blown away. Listen to "Flesh for Bones" and wonder like I do as to why she's not a major label star right now. I assume it's only a matter of time really, she's got the sound and the looks down pat.

I predict she'll be a household name two years from now.

Betting on Linux for Business

Betting on Linux for Business 03/21/2003 07:02 AM
Lured by promises of increased security, lower costs or simply the chance to align themselves with a company other than Microsoft, many enterprises are turning to Linux systems. But choosing Linux still puts an enterprise in a minority, albeit a fast-growing one. How can companies be sure they are making the best choice?

Betting on the big questions of physics

Betting on the big questions of physics 08/27/2004 01:46 PM
David Pescovitz: British bookmaker Ladbrokes is now accepting wagers on the future of physics. They've opened a book on:
* Understanding the origin of cosmic rays by 2010 (4/1 odds)
* The ATLAS experiment at CERN finding the Higgs Boson by 2010 (6/1 odds)
* The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) detecting gravitational waves by 2010 (10/1 odds)
* Building a fusion power station by 2010 (100/1 odds)
Anyone can place bets on these breakthroughs during the next two weeks. Apparently, New Scientist magazine is also involved in the gamble, dedicating ten pages to it in the print edition.
“I’d be tempted to take a bet on the Higgs at 6-1,” says Brian Foster who heads the particle physics group at the University of Oxford in the UK. “I’ve been quite instrumental in betting the taxpayers’ money on us finding it, so I’d better put my money where my mouth is.”

Online Betting Routes Around Bookies

Online Betting Routes Around Bookies 11/03/2003 01:28 PM
There used to be a lot of hype about how the internet was going to do away with the need for "middlemen". It turns out that never happened, because there actually are reasons why many middlemen exist. However, if the internet can make things more efficient, or move some of the burden around, then it probably does make sense. That appears to be what's happening in the UK with an online betting site that takes bookies out of the equation and lets people connect directly to one another to make bets on sporting events. Whereas a bookie makes money on the odds they set, this site just takes a commission off of winnings, letting the people making the best set their own odds. In other words, it's a real exchange, modeled on the stock market, with buyers looking for sellers (and vice versa) as opposed to one central bookmaker taking bets based on odds they set.
