A small Philadelphia-based company may be about to revolutionize the world of Windows application development, not by creating a new proprietary technology, but by bringing proprietary Windows features to Linux. Working with Qt, Trolltech's cross-platform toolkit, MinGW, a minimalist set of GNU utilities for Windows, and Wine, a free implementation of the Windows API, SourceXtreme, Inc. has developed the ability to write Windows programs without ever using Windows. Its goal is to make porting applications to Qt trivial, and to move Windows developers onto a free software platform.

Nokia, the world's largest mobile telephone maker, is getting awfully close to bringing a handheld, Internet-connected television to the consumer market. The Finland-based megacorporation has launched a new category of handheld product -- called mobile media devices -- which feature Nokia's largest, most colorful display: a 640x320 touch-sensitive screen that renders as many as 65,536 colors. Nokia says these new devices, to hit the market in Q2 of 2004, offer plenty of new opportunity for Symbian, Java, and C++ developers and is now making SDKs available for free download.

If you haven’t seen it already, you should read the message from David Treadwell. David’s in charge of all of the WinFX at Microsoft and he’s got the details of how and why Microsoft is bringing WinFX to Windows XP and Windows 2003. This news is nothing but good for external developers making their livings targeting Microsoft technologies. For example, the #1 feature request we got from early Avalon users was to ship it on previous versions of Windows and with this announcement, that’s exactly what we’re planning to do, along with much of the rest of WinFX.

"Essentials of Windows for UNIX
developers" on-line course goes live!
02/14/2004 09:21 AM
When discussing with CIOs and IT directors the idea of adding Windows to the set of platforms for which they develop custom line-of-business apps, one of the most common questions I hear is this: “I've got a team of 50 (or 150, or...) UNIX developers who've been doing that for ten years, or more. How can I get them up to speed on building apps for Windows?“ A serious problem, since developers are not fungible resources; even if you could replace a UNIX-skilled dev with an equivalent Windows-skilled dev, that new person wouldn't have the unique knowledge of the application and the business that is required to effectively build the right apps in the right way.

Fun with Rendezvous

Fun with Rendezvous 02/05/2005 10:11 PM
Rendezvous is Apple's standards-based networking technology that connects devices automatically and allows for zero-configuration integration. After open-sourcing Rendezvous back in September of 2002, Apple has made it easy for developers to use Rendezvous technology in their network-enabled devices or software applications. “No one wants any one company to own or control the core networking technology for the home, school or office,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said. “Rendezvous is becoming a prime example of how open standards can drive innovation and quick adoption in a wide variety of products." Rendezvous can be used with several Mac OS X applications including iChat AV, Safari, iTunes and iPhoto. Many shareware companies have come up with ways to utilise the networking technology in other ways to enhance the Rendezvous experience. Tildesoft's Rendezvous Browser is an application that will browse all the Rendezvous services available on your local network. This application will show all the known Rendezvous services available, which computers have them, along with any extra information given with the service. Rendezvous Browser comes complete with a list of known services and also lets users add their own. DropCopy allows the user to quickly send files and folders to multiple destinations using Rendezvous, by dragging selected files onto recipient's names in a popup window without dialogs, passwords or confirmations. Stephan Kleinert and Markus Brand's address-o-sync allows users to share and sync Apple Address Books on Rendezvous networks, and those who use Mac OS 10.3 or higher can use the application with zero configuration. The application even allows the user to share only certain groups created in the Address Book, allowing the user to decide which group of contacts will be shared and which should be private, and all contact groups are password protected so that not everyone on the same network can access all Address Books.
