Vanessa sez, "This is just amazing -- the authors manipulated images
from the Bayeux Tapestry and created a Flash-based kit where you can
make your own medieval comic strip. Images are scalable, type can be
colored. You can send your images as ecards to the medievalists of
your acquaintance." I made an Orwellian one that I'm quite proud of,
in my own, quiet way.

The multilingual internet: new studies
12/02/2003 03:08 AM
The new issue of
the Journal for
Computer-Mediated Communication explores emergent language
practices in email, text messaging ,
newsgroups , and instant messenger (
IM ).
The multilingual Internet raises a number of practical and scholarly
questions, ranging from the distinctive features of email or chat in
languages with specific font-related requirements, to code-switching
in bilingual or multilingual online communication, to the effects of
the English language and global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on
[computer-mediated communication] in local languages. Linguistic
research has shown that spoken languages vary in their structures,
meanings and usageāis this equally true on the Internet, where
speakers of different languages come into contact and influence one
another on a scale never before imagined?
Topics include
Arabic and
Greek scripts transformed into ASCII text by instant messenger,
the
spread of English , and
gender empowerment in chat .

P2P studies say that it's not hurting
music
03/28/2005 07:32 PMCory Doctorow:
Copyfight's Alex Wexelblat has a doozy of an editorial on the
pseudoscience behind claims that P2P is costing the music industry
money:
...[E]very study that has been done since Napster has shown that music
sharing has no negative effects on music sales (CD or downloaded). In
fact, some show a positive effect. If that message got into the public
consciousness the Cartel would be much worse off. Therefore, they've
done all they can to frame the debate in terms of their scares, not
science. So we have the scene - surely worthy of Beckett - in which a
certified class of 27,000 songwriters and music publishers will argue
against Grokster, as Tony Mauro put it on law.com "casting it as a
life-or-death struggle over theft of their means of livelihood."
There's just one eensy weensy problem here - NOBODY's livelihood is
being stolen. It's just not happening. There were no WMD in Iraq,
there was no cocaine on that boat (*), and music sharing does not cost
artists money.

Weblogging is increasing, according to recent
studies , and emerging as a significant
part of the United States media landscape. Bloggers constitute a
statistical minority of the online population, but include between two
and eight million Americans. While perceptions of tone, content, and
the newnewness of blogging may prevent widespread adoption at the
moment, advertising
is beginning to take root.

And The Internet
More Misleading Studies About Children
And The Internet
09/07/2004 04:07 PMA group in the UK called NCH can't seem to put out a reasonable,
unbiased study to save their lives. This is the charity group that is
spending so much time worrying about children that they can't be
bothered with coming up with unbiased studies. Everything leans so
far in one direction, it's almost silly. First they
blamed
the internet for child porn as if it wouldn't exist otherwise,
followed by a survey using leading questions to make it look as though
parents
were afraid 3G wireless was dangerous to their kids. To top that
they put out a fear-mongering report about
11 year
olds gambling online, when all they had done was coax a single
16-year-old to sign up for an online gambling site. Their latest is
along the same lines. They start with the assumption that "the
internet is bad for children" and then absolutely freak out when
many
parents don't seem to agree with them. Rather than think that,
perhaps, many parents actually understand and appreciate the risks of
the internet -- knowing that a properly monitored and trained kid can
handle the internet -- NCH immediately says parents need to be
educated. In fact, the study shows that many who aren't worried say
so because they believe their child has been adequately taught about
the risks. Whether or not that's true is an open question. However,
this NCH study doesn't go down that road, preferring to simply freak
out that some parents might dare to trust their kids on the internet.

04/09/2004 04:04 PMWe've all seen Microsoft's latest barrage of studies that say their
products are more cost-effective than the competition. Naturally, many
accuse Microsoft -- and other companies that publish outside studies
that support their corporate goals -- of bias, if not outright
deception. To get a little more insight into the value of TCO studies,
we turned (via email) to David A. Wheeler, who has done more than a
few software cost-comparisons himself, for advice about how much we
should (and shouldn't) trust "sponsored" research.

01/27/2004 04:12 PMMicrosoft Corp. is touting the results of "independent analyses" in
its latest effort to show corporate decision-makers the merits of its
Windows operating system vs. Linux, its biggest open-source
competitor. The studies were, in fact, performed by well-known,
independent research firms such as IDC, Giga Research and Meta Group.
But the reports themselves tell the rest of the story: They were
conducted "at the request of Microsoft," "commissioned by Microsoft"
or "prepared under contract from Microsoft."
