Linux Kernel 2.6.0 Released

Linux Kernel 2.6.0 Released 12/19/2003 07:40 PM
Just in case you've been offworld and somehow missed the news, Linus announced the release of the version 2.6.0 of the Linux kernel Wednesday. One of the most significant changes to the Linux kernel for us robot folks is the merging of much of uCLinux into the mainstream kernel. This means 2.6 is going to become even more widespread in robotics and other embedded applications. For a more general description of what's new in the 2.6 kernel, check out The Wonderful World of Linux 2.6 by Joe Pranevich.

Linux 2.6 branch)

ATA over Ethernet driver 2.6-8 (For
Linux 2.6 branch)
03/24/2005 04:09 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
The configuration of allowable network interfaces has been fixed and improved. A module load option and a corresponding boot option now allow the interfaces list to be set when driver is initialized. Userland software has been split out into the separate aoetools package. Documentation has been updated and improved.

ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux

ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux
2.6 branch)
04/11/2005 05:14 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe device is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.

ATA over Ethernet driver for Linux 2.6-7

03/17/2005 03:35 AM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
Support for multiple AoE targets with the same MAC address was completed. For compatibility with older 2.6 kernels, the new endian-marked types were replaced with old-style fixed-size unsigned types. The documentation was updated.

“infamous41md has reported some vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or gain escalated privileges. Various functions in the IEEE 1394 driver contain integer overflows within the memory allocation scheme. This can potentially be exploited via specially crafted requests, which may cause a large amount of data to be copied into an insufficiently sized buffer.”

translucency loadable kernel module
0.6.1 (Default branch)
04/16/2005 10:16 AM
Screenshot translucency is a loadable kernel module for Linux that virtually merges two directories, making it possible to overwrite files on read-only media and compile projects (such as the Linux kernel) with different options without copying sources each time. No user-space tools have to be changed. The process is also known as inheriting (ifs), stacking, translucency (tfs), loopback (lofs), and overlay (ovlfs).
Changes:
This release includes a port to the MIPS architecture, a general code cleanup, and two bugfixes.

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)

Openwall Linux kernel patch 2.4.30-ow1
(Linux 2.4 branch)
04/08/2005 10:32 AM
The Openwall Linux kernel patch is a collection of security "hardening" features for the Linux kernel. In addition to the new features, some versions of the patch contain various security fixes. The "hardening" features of the patch, while not a complete method of protection, provide an extra layer of security against the easier ways to exploit certain classes of vulnerabilities and/or reduce the impact of those vulnerabilities. The patch can also add a little bit more privacy to the system by restricting access to parts of /proc so that users may not see what others are doing.
Changes:
This release was updated to Linux 2.4.30.
