The latest Cassini- Huygens mission images of Saturn are now available at http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://www.nasa.gov/cassini. The first pictures taken by the Cassini spacecraft after it began orbiting Saturn show breathtaking detail of Saturn's rings, and other science measurements reveal that Saturn's magnetic field pulsed in size as Cassini approached the planet.

Cassini Is Almost to Saturn!

Cassini Is Almost to Saturn! 05/28/2004 10:58 PM
After 6 years in space, the $3.2 billion Cassini robotic spacecraft is due to arrive at Saturn soon. Nasa will fire up the engines to prepare Cassini for an orbital insertion on July 1st. As early as June 11th, Cassini will zip past one of Saturn's outer moons Phoebe. Later in the middle of January, the Huygens probe will be dropped to study the atmosphere of Titan; another of Saturn's moons. Some activists hated Cassini for being nuclear but it appears not to have harmed anything much. Of course, Nasa is yet again searching and hoping for life on other celestial bodies, but at least we've been getting some great pictures of the Ringed World.

Cool Cassini Saturn science

Cool Cassini Saturn science 06/15/2004 10:12 AM
BoingBoing friend John Parres says:
JPL's Cassini spacecraft is making it's final approach to Saturn after seven years of whipping around our solar system. This weekend the probe flew by an outer retrograde moon, Phoebe, and based on stunning pictures unspooling today it seems Phoebe is an ice rich body, perhaps even a captured comet! If all goes well on July 1st Cassini will enter into orbit around the ringed planet and provide four years of exploration including the December landing of the 700 pound Huygens probe on Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
