Stats for Schools
http://www.stats4schools.gov. uk./

Stats4schools, developed by the United Kingdom's Office of National Statistics, "is about helping teachers and pupils to get more from statistics." The project has posted here datasets collected by the Office for National Statistics as part of the Omnibus survey and made them available for students to download free of charge. Teachers will also find lesson plans, worksheets and datasets that can be used in their classrooms. The lesson ideas are organized by topics and involve using statistics to answer questions such as, "Do girls pull their weight more than boys at home?" and "Are you at risk from the sun?" Additional resources on teaching statistics are available from the Links section of the website. This has been added to Statistics Resources Subject Tracerâ„¢ Information Blog.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2005. http://scout.wisc.edu/

Technology in Schools

Technology in Schools 12/03/2002 11:46 AM

It's quite sad how technology has turned out in our school district. Not so much that our school doesn't have technology, or that the people in charge of it aren't smart. It's sad that our school is raised on the fact that Windows PC's are superior to Macs, or any other operating system, and that technology only gets as good as we have it. Its a shame that so many people are so close minded. I think our school could benefit hugely by switching to Macs, but that will never happen with the current administrative staff. But I suppose this is my opinion. Although I've used every platform you can think of, my opinion doesn't count, nor does my parents, or anyone else's in our city. A few select people decide which platform I have to deal with.

Check out this site for more info on why schools should have Macs instead of Wintel machines.

Now Schools Need To Block Advergaming?

Now Schools Need To Block Advergaming? 09/15/2004 09:50 PM
There are already battles over how much schools need to do to block access to porn and other inappropriate sites from students, and now they are being told to worry about "advergaming" as well. This, of course, is at the same time as corporations are increasingly sneaking into schools in other ways, from McDonald's supplying lunch food to the MPAA teachin g lessons about copyright. Instead of worrying how to "block" such things, couldn't it be useful as a lesson? Advertising is clearly a part of our lives, every day. There's no way to avoid it. Why not start teaching kids at a young age how advertising works, and teaching them how to have a more critical mind about what they see and read. Rather than banning it, let it come in, while teaching the students how to deal with it. Won't that do a better job preparing them for adulthood?
