Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular

Junxion: Shared Internet Over Cellular 06/23/2004 09:11 AM

junxion.jpg imageAlthough they're still in the prototype stage, a Seattle company called Junxion is doing something potentially very useful. By plugging any number of cellular network PCMCIA cards into their 'Junxion' box, which then acts as a router over Ethernet or WiFi to any number of local machines, the company plans to capitalize on the ever-expanding data bandwidth available on modern cellular networks. So instead of scrambling to find a WiFi connection -- which is still a good option, of course, especially if it's a free node -- you can set up a mobile workplace with a decent internet connection anywhere you can get a cellular signal. You're limited to the speeds of the cellular network, of course, but between a Junxion box, which is pretty large now, but will surely get smaller, and built-in WiFi, you should be able to get wireless internet just about anywhere. And that, as they say, owns. (Thanks, Oliver!)

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal

Junxion Box Puts Cellular Data at
Workgroup's Disposal
06/21/2004 09:02 AM
Junxion Box acts as bridge between growing cellular data networks and the need for ubiquitous, driver-free workgroup access: In today's Seattle Times, I write about local firm Junxion which will shortly ship its Junxion Box, a small device that uplinks to cellular data networks through a PC Card, and shares the connection via built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Think of it like a portable Internet feed. The Junxion Box is driver free in the sense that the company handles the software connection for several kinds of PC Cards to several national data networks. Local users connect via the LAN side--they don't have to install and configure the special PC Card drivers which are available for specific platforms with specific limitations. Temporary work sites and mobile workgroups will benefit most from the system, which is an effective modem and analog line replacement given current cell data speeds. But as cell networks increase in speed and prices continue to fall, it's likely that the Junxion Box's niche will expand as more of a broadband replacement for certain kinds of markets. I've tested a prototype of the Junxion box, and it's just as easy as the company maintains. You plug it into AC power or a DC car adapter. You wait a few moments for it to train up to the cell data network. You connect. Will cell operators allow the Junxion Box on their network, and can they do anything to stop its use? The answers seem to be maybe and no....

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Thanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Just when you thought online advertising couldn't get any more insidious than spam or spyware, Belkin is using a firmware upgrade for its wireless routers to force advertising on its customers -- from within their own home network. Believe it or not, the upgrade reprograms the router to periodically redirect a user's browser to a web page selling Belkin's web filtering parental control software. there is an option to switch it off, but just the mere fact that they're even doing this in the first place is totally messed up. “RSS Router”

“RSS Router” 05/25/2004 03:03 PM
Steve Gillmor has mentioned to me a few times his idea of an “RSS Router.” (No disrespect to Atom intended: I believe the phrase pre-dates Atom. Plus the alliteration is cool.)

The idea as I understand it is this: your feedreader, like your browser and email app, is a hub of information. It makes sense to want to route information from the hub to other applications. You might want to store something in a database, send an email based on a news item, send a news item into an iChat session, and so on. Sending a news item to a weblog editor is just the first, most obvious application.

Unfortunately, browsers and email applications have rarely understood that they’re hubs and that it’s natural to want to route information to other applications. (Some have understood that, actually, but they’re the exceptions: I’m speaking generally.)

But with feedreaders we have a chance to make our applications truly routers instead of places where data goes to die. This is especially important as more and more types of information are being syndicated, and as people are relying more and more on the technology.

So, I could have called the weblog editor interface the “RSS Router Interface.” Even though I didn’t, the point is, I hope, made.

Now, it’s not magic. For it to work, receiving applications have to implement their side of the interface. From people I’ve heard from so far, it’s actually a piece of cake, which is good, as it should be. (It shouldn’t be too difficult for feedreaders, too, but it’s a little more complicated. Which is fine: there are more potential receiving apps than feedreaders.)

SBC Offered Wi-Fi/DSL Router before

04/09/2004 06:34 PM
Qwest's claim of being first telco to offer DSL/Wi-Fi gateway bundle contradicted by SBC's offering: Alert reader Chester Cade, an SBC customer, contacted us to provide details about SBC Yahoo!'s DSL offering for residential customers noting that the offer of a $149 or $179 Wi-Fi/DSL router/modem bundle (with $99 off for service commitment) has been available for months. Qwest's press release claims bragging rights: Qwest is the first major telecommunications company to offer customers a wireless-ready modem, and the company also has decided to make this the standard modem for all of its new DSL customers. The latter part may be true, but it would appear SBC beat them (quietly) to the punch. The device that SBC is offering appears to be the HomePortal 1000HW, which is a DSL router with Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, and HomePNA connections built-in....
