Documenthttp:
//www.ieee.org/products/onlinepubs/news/0104_04.htmlThe
IEEE released its
one-millionth online technical document to researchers on 22 January
2004. There are now more than one million full-text technology papers,
articles and standards in
IEEE
Xplore, the delivery system for IEEE online publications. The
milestone document, "Novel Frame Buffer Pixel Circuits for
Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays," was published in the January
2004 issue of the
IEEE
Journal of Solid-State Circuits. The paper was written by IEEE
Members Sangrok Lee and James C. Morizio and IEEE Fellow Kristina M.
Johnson. The authors are with the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department, Pratt School of Engineering, at Duke University in Durham,
NC. The paper may be read for free
here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
"This
milestone illustrates IEEE's importance as the primary source for
current technical literature." said IEEE publications director Anthony
Durniak. "The publications of IEEE's many Societies and Councils cover
the breadth of today's technology. With IEEE Xplore, we provide
high-tech researchers, scientists, engineers and other users with a
single, convenient source for access to the papers and technology
standards they need to develop tomorrow's technical innovations. The
value of IEEE-published information is demonstrated in the four
million downloads requested by users each month." The IEEE online
collection of technology articles and papers has grown by more than 25
percent over the last 18 months. This includes more than 80,000
archival backfile documents from 1950-1987 added last year.
IEEE publishes 121 journals and magazines and more than 400
conference proceedings titles each year and has 900 active technology
standards. All of this information is available to researchers as
full-text documents through the IEEE Xplore online delivery system.
IEEE Xplore also delivers journals and conference proceedings from the
IEE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, headquartered in the
United Kingdom.
Access to IEEE online documents is
available through institutional subscriptions, by individual online
article purchase, or through subscriptions available to IEEE
members.

year when I happened to catch the first episode of American Idol and
I've watched every episode since. Most of it is pap and watching a
show requires fast forwarding through almost all of it, but once in a
while you get some magic moments. Here's Fantasia's
song from last night's show (which I got from Caroline's site). It was easily the
best performance of the last two seasons. It wasn't just singing it
right, the way she presented it onstage made it look like it was
ripped from a Broadway show. This is what you get when you totally
commit to doing something creative, it's freaking amazing.

1 Million Free Songs for Download
1 Million Free Songs for Download
07/29/2004 03:28 PMIn my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll
never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted,
RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it,
too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you
really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free
music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a
user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of
thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of
them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed
labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that
iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do
so.
Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you
download RIAA music anyway.

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

Time To Drop Song Download Costs
Time To Drop Song Download Costs
09/20/2004 03:07 PMWe've been
waiting
patiently for the inevitable price war to break out in the online
music download store world, but so far it's (mostly) held up due to
the high fees the recording industry continues to charge. Now,
Newsweek's tech columnist Steven Levy, is pointing out that
if the
recording industry dropped their fees, they'd sell a lot more
music. He thinks that sooner or later, the industry has to
realize that they'll do even better if prices are cheaper. He points
to Real Networks' experience (which is a bit skewed since it was a
promotional plan) in dropping the price by half -- but which allowed
them to sell
six times as many songs. If this ratio were to
hold (a big "if" obviously, since it assumes people will spend more
overall) then the industry would end up making a lot more money by
cutting their price -- but, instead, of course, they're all looking
for ways to
raise
prices or force people to buy bad songs to get good songs.

record of 3.3 million songs in the week since the third-generation

free songs from popular commercial artists made available as part of a
"Free Song of the Day" promotion to celebrate the store's one-year
anniversary. Last week Apple said the iTunes Music Store currently
sells 2.7 million songs per week. Subtracting the free songs, this
suggests that the store's weekly business may have been slightly more
brisk than usual.
