05/14/2004 09:16 AMOpinion: Intel recently canceled two processors in development.
Both would have been members of the Pentium 4 architecture family.
Does that mean the Pentium 4 as we know it is dead? Loyd suggests it's
a little more complicated than that.

06/05/2005 11:32 PMLots of rumors and talk. With both the Playstation 3 and the new XBox
using PowerPC (or POWER-derived) chips, wouldn't you think staying
with PowerPC is a pretty safe bet for now. Anyway, what I wanted to
say is... All the stories are missing the obvious: iPod's are using
ARM processors. Maybe Apple wants to use Intel processors for them
instead. Intel makes the XScale MIPS processors used in some Palm
devices, cell phones, GPSes etc. update: mariuz points out...

Delhi
Delhi
03/22/2005 04:22 PMReturned home, spent the evening putting together a sofa and a small
shelf, and woke up at 5.30 am to catch the early flight to Delhi,
India to attend the
Doors 8
conference.
Egh.
India is... overwhelming. And I haven't been to anywhere yet.
From the touts at the airport who say anything ("no sir, only one
person is allowed in a taxi!") to the rickshaws to the girl that
tried to run under a taxi to the empt vastness that is New Delhi to
the overkill service at the hotel... Well, ever heard of a Finn say
"service was too good"? Now you have. It just passes my
comfortness level - the amount attention feels like someone knocked
you out with a soft pillow and did a manicure to you while you were
still dazed.
Obviously, I'm just seeing one part of Delhi, the one that's from
the time of the British colonialism. The rest is out there, just
beyond the horizon. I'll get there, eventually.
The conference is pretty interesting. The people here seem to be a
relaxed, interesting mix of individuals with life experiences from
almost all corners of life. For example: I talked to someone who
actually used to be in the "selling women's used knickers to
men" -business. (A rather profitable, yet dull industry. No
growth opportunities.) I also see now why India is a good place for
holding a conference such as this: the problems that people of a
country this size and wealth face are quite different from the Western
lifestyle, but yet there is infrastructure and stability and will to
make things better. There's a whole range of problems, ranging from
education of basic hygiene to revving up an entire IT industry - and
they're trying to do it all at the same time.
(Heard an interesting statistic: local women don't live to be much
older than men on the average. That's because they are allowed to
starve. Even when breastfeeding.
Ya. Sense kicked into me. Probably good.)
Off to New Delhi
Off to New Delhi
03/22/2005 03:45 PM
I'm at the airport in Amsterdam waiting board my flight to New
Delhi. I'll be there for almost a week to attend and speak at Doors of
Perception. The doctor in Amsterdam said that I didn't need malaria
pills even though many of my friends are taking them. I hope they're
right.
See you on the other side. This is only my second time in New Delhi
and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and getting to know the
city better.

A new study published in the journal Science looked at
footnotes from scientific articles in three major journals (the New
England Journal of Medicine, Science, and Nature) at 3 months, 15
months and 27 months after publication, and found that the prevalence
of inactive Internet references grew during those intervals from 3.8%
to 10% to 13%. In another recent study, one-fifth of the Internet
addresses used in a Web-based high school science curriculum
disappeared over 12 months, and a third study found that 40% to 50% of
the URLs referenced in articles in two computing journals were
inaccessible within four years. Brewster Kahle, widely admired for his
creation of the Internet Archive project, says: "It's a huge problem.
The average lifespan of a Web page today is 100 days. This is no way
to run a culture."

business librarian Alan T. Schroeder Jr. calls attention to some
research by Robert Dellavalle of the University of Colorado Health
Sciences Center on the phenomenon of so-called dynamic URLs. "In a
recent issue of Science, Dellavalle and colleagues determined after
only three months, the journals New England Journal of Medicine,
Science and Nature had 3.8 percent of their article references
inactive. After 15 months, 10 percent were found inactive and after 27
months, 13 percent were inactive. These journals are print staples in
most research libraries and if references in these heavyweights are
susceptible to incomplete research, imagine the percentages in less
reputable publications related to URL longevity." He continues:
"Incomplete repointing (or 'hardware reconfiguration') of servers
leads many to a research dead end. If the required URL now has a new
IP address with no legacy page or 'paper trail' created during
repointing, you probably will never find that URL again. As server
hosts come and go, mergers occur, data migrates to new systems and
companies go bankrupt, expect this problem to continue. Expect URLs to
continue to disappear with no explanation. And expect to see a lot of
conflicting and duplicative research." What can be done in the short
term? Schroeder urges researchers involved in ongoing, lengthy
research to recheck URLs for accuracy and currency on a monthly or
bi-weekly basis as their research progresses toward publication.
