Apple today announced that as the number of songs downloaded from the iTunes Music Store crosses 95 million tomorrow, the company will begin the countdown to 100 million songs by giving away 50 special 20GB iPods -- one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs...

Pepsico Inc.'s promotion of Apple's iTunes Music Store fell well short of Apple's expectations, according to the company's Vice President of Worldwide Corporate Communications, Katie Cotton. Cotton told Cnet that five million songs have been redeemed thus far. According to the terms of the promotion, which expires Friday, up to 100 million songs could have been given away.

Apple on Thursday announced that it has sold over 50 million songs in the first year from its European iTunes Music Store. iTunes Music Stores were launched in France, Germany and the United Kingdom in June of 2004, and are now open in a total of 17 European countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. “We’re thrilled to have sold and delivered over 50 million songs in our first year,” Apple’s vice president of Applications Eddy Cue said. “We’d like to thank European music fans for making iTunes such a success”.
