Or the Czec Republic? Here's the scoop. We've scared up a non-Linux machine for Leo Tötsch, a man of prodigious parrot production, to use. That's good news, as he's x86/Linux only (behind a metered ISDN line) at the moment. This is causing us headaches with Parrot, since things that work just fine there fail on other platforms. Hence the scaring up the machine. What we need now is to get it to him Leo's in Austria, and not going to EuroFoo, but the machine we've found isn't in Austria, but can go to EuroFoo. So we're hoping to get the...

Misleading Mobilkom Austria Announcement 02/16/2004 03:56 PM
This release says that Mobilkom Austria will build the "industry's first fully integrated Wi-Fi/cellular platform": If you read closely though, this isn't about seamless roaming from a Wi-Fi network to a cellular network but it's about backend integration. So a single backend billing, subscriber management and customer care platform will support both the Wi-Fi and cellular services offered by Mobilekom Austria. Also, this announcement sneaks in the tidbit that Mobilkom Austria will be offering Wi-Fi in McDonald's restaurants throughout Austria....

Great Launch Events in Taiwan and

Great Launch Events in Taiwan and
Austria
09/03/2004 06:51 AM

Our project's international roll-out continues. Two more countries have now come up with their local licenses.

First, on Saturday, Sep 4, Lawrence Lessig will be speaking in Taipei, where the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, as the Taiwan project lead, has completed the porting process and is now presenting the licenses to the island's public. Special thanks to Yih-Suan from the Acadamia Sinica, who put most of the finishing touches on the Taiwanese licenses.

Second, in the Alps, the transposed Austrian licenses will be celebrated and discussed during the week-long Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. Lawrence Lessig will participate in a symposium on 'Commons & Communities - Social Life in the Digital Age' at the Brucknerhaus on Sep 6, 10.30am, while Roland will say a few words on the launch event proper at the Brucknerhaus on Sep 7, 3pm. Much work on the Austrian licenses was done by Julia Kueng and Georg Pleger, our local project leads.

As an important signal for all open source projects and free software initiatives, Creative Commons also won the Golden Nica in the 2004 Prix Ars Electronica’s Net Vision category. Christiane will receive the prize on behalf of CC on Friday, Sep 3, at the Prix Art gala event in Linz.

Anybody interested in attending one of the talks above and thus get in touch with us is welcome.

Possio Releases Portable UMTS Gateway

Possio Releases Portable UMTS Gateway 02/05/2005 09:27 PM
Possio has updated its product line to add the PX40, which handles UMTS: Like its predecessor, the PX30, and a similar product from Junxion, the PX40 acts as a gateway to hook into a cellular data network and route the Internet to Ethernet and Wi-Fi users. The PX40 has integral UMTS support (for two popular flavors); its predecessor was more of an enabling tool without integral network connectivity, and the Junxion Box accepts PC Cards for a variety of cell data uplinks. The PX40 displays SMS messages as well as sends them: this SMS feature is needed for certain networks that use SMS as part of the provisioning. It also has a built-in 802.1X supplicant, so it can make an authenticated network connection where needed. (802.1X in this context is like PPPoE support in home gateways: you need the end-point device to act precisely like a client.) [link via OSGi] By the way, Junxion was featured in Business 2.0 recently, but not by name: the Stay Connected element of the Google shuttle bus from SF to Mountain View is a Junxion Box....

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs

Real's Half-Price Sale: $.49 Songs 08/17/2004 07:32 AM

real_harmony.jpg imageTo kick off its iPod-compatible "Harmony" music download service (which works inside of RealPlayer), RealNetworks is offering a limited-time half-price sale, selling online downloads for just $.49, as well as half-price albums. This is separate from Real's streaming Rhapsody service, although Real plans to add the Harmony songs to that service as well later in the year. The upshot of all of this? Ignoring Wal-Mart's initial lower-price entry into the music download space, this could be the start of the first legal music downloading price war. Apple probably won't flinch (yet), but hopefully this is a sign of lower prices all around in the near future.

How Not To Price

How Not To Price 05/13/2004 09:23 PM
While the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that Six Apart has released version 3.0 of their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing out on the bigger story: the pricing structure they set up is being almost universally trashed by loyal Mova ble Type Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of the most basic rules in pricing: never take away features and charge for them. You can charge for new features - but taking away features that were included for free before always pisses off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should have known how their users would respond to this offering.

I noticed a small flood of Gnomedex registrations over the past couple of days, and I figured I was missing something. That seems to be the case, as we are moving the price up from $99 to $199 on April 15th (Tax Day)! It'll be $249 at the door, FWIW. If you're hungry for more information about the conference, the site should be up by April 5th. No real word on who's presenting and sponsoring yet, though. We're still taking suggestions....

The Price of Silence

The Price of Silence 01/04/2004 10:47 PM

I have been trolling around the iTunes Music Store lately looking for unusual things to catch my eye (or ear). Today I discovered that silence has a price. And as you would expect, that price is $.99. The above link may only work if you have iTunes installed. If so and you don't have it, go download it. It's a pretty good music player and it's free.

I think some of my friends with small children may actually see this as a pretty good deal.
