Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PM
The Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they can't even track the thousands of different databases and logistics systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the expense of our own tax dollars.

us the wrong track

If this is the right track, don't show

09/23/2004 08:02 PM
One of the more fascinating moments of today's White House press conference with Bush and Allawi came when the president, who claims to pay scant attention to public opinion polling (that's something Clintons do), referred to "right track/wrong track" polling in Iraq like he was George Gallup himself:

Konfabulator 2.0

Konfabulator 2.0 06/22/2005 01:58 AM

Before there was Dashboard, there was Konfabulator. While Apple was working on bringing Dashboard to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), Konfabulator was getting ready for Windows. Ars Technica reviews Konfabulator 2.0 for Windows.

Konfabulator manages little programs called "widgets" that do little tasks that you probably perform frequently and should be all but completely automated. For example, think about what's needed to check the weather report online. You could fire up a web browser, navigate to your favorite site, punch in your ZIP code... You could also get a little system tray app that continuously polls a weather service. This is an improvement, but it takes up prime real estate on your screen. Instead, you can use the Konfabulator weather widget. It provides a small graphical display of the weather for the next few days.

Konfabulator still runs on Mac OS X, but this review looks at the Windows version. If you are a Windows user who has been wondering what all the fuss over Dashboard is about, now's the chance to see for yourself.

What sets Konfabulator apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X.

Konfabulator utilizes XML/JavaScript-based Widgets that can include AppleScript, Unix calls, and other system/Internet functions.

Arlo Rose and Perry Clarke have released Konfabulator 1.5.3, and update to their JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X. Version 1.5.3 includes numerous bug fixes and enhancements. Konfabulator, which run little programs called Widgets, sells for $25 and requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later. If you own a copy of Konfabulator, be sure to try out the dotmac.info Konfabulator Widget which lets you put dotmac.info right on your desktop.

The Konfabulator Controversy

The Konfabulator Controversy 06/30/2004 10:45 PM

inessential.com: Weblog: What should Apple do?: There's a bit of a controversy brewing in Macland about the WWDC conference and the Konfabulator knockoff Apple introduced called Dashboard. The theory is that Apple saw a great third-party app that people loved, and decided it needed to be part of the OS itself.

Apple can’t do everything — they need other developers to make software for OS X too. What concerns me is the message the Dashboard thing sends. It goes like this, "If you come up with a good idea and develop a successful product, we might copy it and bundle it for free with the OS."

The Konfabulator folks, for their part, are having some fun with it, poking fun of the posters that poked fun at Microsoft with a banner on their site that says, "Cupertino [where Apple is based], start your photocopiers!"

Konfabulator was apparently written by some ex-Apple employes, and they had this to say:

Regarding the conspiracy theory about Konsposé and prior knowledge of Dashboard, here's the scoop. We knew Dashboard was coming, and we'd been told by *many* people that it was being developed as a "Konfabulator Killer". We never knew the specifics of it other than it was rumored to be the exact same thing as Konfabulator integrated at the system level. We didn't know that it was going to be touted as part of Exposé, and we didn't know that their format was going to be closer to a web page than a structured XML file.

The threat of having the OS subsume your original work is a threat Windows developers have lived with for years. I've always wondered what happened to WinZip and PKZip sales when Windows XP was introduced with integrated zip functionality.

No real surprise that Apple pulled a Microsoft stunt in making an announcement that will probably cause a competitor to go belly up. You will have to check out the Konfabulator website. After you do that then you have to take a look at the posters Apple had hung up that suggested Microsoft would be chasing Apple. Seems Apple is chasing Konfabulator. Bunch of hypocrites if you ask me.
