05/11/2004 05:04 AMReuters - Sony Corp has created a buzz with the
unveiling of a new digital music player, but analysts say it
has a long way to go before it challenges the industry
dominance of Apple Computer's popular iPod.

07/01/2004 08:50 AMSony Corp. has unveiled its first hard-disk drive-based digital music
player to bear the Walkman name. The device was launched on Thursday
as the Walkman brand marked its 25th anniversary. The NW-HD1 features
a 20GB hard-disk drive and is, according to the company, the smallest
music player at this capacity. It measures 89 millimeters by 62.1
millimeters by 13.8 millimeters and weighs 110 grams. The capacity is
half that of Apple Computer Inc.'s highest capacity iPod, but Sony
says its player trumps Apple's in terms of the number of songs it can
store: 13,000 on the Walkman versus 10,000 on the iPod.

Two Flash Players From Sony: NW-E75 and
NW-E95
06/15/2004 01:05 PM
Sony announced two new flash
Memory MP3 players that look not unlike tiny music gas cans, the
NW-E75 (256MB) and the NW-E95 (512MB). Both have an impressive
playback time of about 70 hours from their rechargeable batteries and
look to be able to record to memory, as well. The NW-E75 comes in
three colors, red, white, and blue, while the higher-capacity NW-E95
comes only in black (and are both the same size, but I left the images
in their native resolution so you could get a better look). Looks like
these will likely be Japan-only, for now.

09/23/2004 06:06 PMSony's apparently gotten the message: Some of its new MP3 player
models will feature direct support for MP3 in addition to its

flash-based players Sony plans to release in Europe this year,
according to reports, which also indicate that Sony plans to release
MP3-compatible flash players in the United States.

Xeni Jardin:
Sony confirmed yesterday that it plans to add native MP3 support to
digital music players, in a move that will likely help the products
compete more effectively with more popular competitors like Apple's
iPod. Until now, the Sony devices were designed to only play files
encoded with Sony's proprietary Atrac music file format.
The shift from reliance on its proprietary format will begin with
flash memory-based players, the electronics giant said, but plans are
still being finalized on how and when products will add MP3 support.
CNET News.com affiliate ZDNet France first reported of the change in
Sony's strategy for the European market. U.S. representatives said the
company is making similar plans here.

Pocket-Lint brings to our
attention the F500i camera phone, the first Sony Ericsson phone on the
Vodafone UK network. What it does, you see, is take VGA-quality
digital photographs and then, while this might be shocking to those
unprepared, also allows you to make a telephone call over the
airwaves using a tiny, integrated "cellular" radio. Yes, folks, it's a
camera, but also a phone! Oh. You've ... seen ... ah.
Well, it has a tiny 3D chip and games! Did you know that? Ah ha!
As I thought.
